Retool, Self-Hosted — A low code platform to build internal tools

Our low code app builder combines the ease of drag-and-drop visual components with APIs, logic, and escape hatches so developers can custom code whatever they need. Now with self-serve plans that you can deploy on your own private network.

This is a big move for Retool considering their largest customers are in the enterprise who care even more about self-hosting.

Thanks @rrhoover! Definitely a big decision for us and hopefully taking a step closer to making Retool the way all engineers build software

Hello Product Hunt! @dvdhsu, @hirday_gupta, @andrew_spencer, @kevin_garcia1, @purisid and I have been building an exciting new update for Retool, a low code app platform made for developers to build internal apps, fast. Until now only our enterprise customers had access to self-hosted Retool. Today we are excited to launch a self-hosted Retool option to all users. Now even a 1-person startup can self-host Retool without talking to anyone. There’s a lot of reasons why you might want to self-host Retool: - You work in heavily regulated industries, like financial services or healthcare - You can only access sensitive data from your private network - You prefer to host software in your own VPC or locally No matter your reason, we’re excited to see folks try self-hosted Retool, and have done a lot of engineering work to make deployment easy—you can use Docker, Kubernetes, and 1-click deploy on AWS. We want to know: what do you think and how can this be even more useful for folks who prefer self-hosted software? Thank you!

@dvdhsu @hirday_gupta @andrew_spencer @kevin_garcia1 @cuffejamie Congrats on the launch — this is great. Win for open-source! 🙌

@dvdhsu @hirday_gupta @andrew_spencer @kevin_garcia1 @cuffejamie @mrahmadawais It's not open source. To the retool team, you might want to add a license to https://github.com/tryretool/ret...

@dvdhsu @hirday_gupta @andrew_spencer @kevin_garcia1 @purisid @cuffejamie Congratulations on the launch! To make self-hosting available, even for individual users, is a big step! I'm sure lean teams will avail the services. Glad to see no change in pricing as well! 😉
Jamie Cuffe
Thanks @adityavsc! Totally agree, the main goal here is making it possible for any developer to self-serve and get started no matter their infra/security needs.

I'm a Retool customer, and really like the product. But, this launch of a self-hosted option isn't new - they've offered a self-hosted product for at least a year. My guess is this is a marketing response to Tooljet's open source launch. I understand the business driver for this, but it also seems counter to the spirit of this community and as a fan of Retool, just feels like you're better than this.
Jamie Cuffe
Hi @tela! Super fair concern. You're right that we've provided the option for Enterprise plan customers to self-host Retool since we were 2 people - more about that here from @dvdhsu: https://retool.com/blog/building.... We're now making it possible for all Retool customers to self-host from day 1. Today's launch reflects lots of eng work into many new updates: a new self-serve payment option for our Free and Startup self-hosted plans, improvements to our self-hosted deployment experience, 1-click AWS deployment and more. We hope this will enable all engineers to try Retool regardless of their infra/data setups. In any case, appreciate your feedback on the launch!
tela
@dvdhsu @cuffejamie Thanks so much for clarifying all of that, and I'm glad to hear this is a strategic direction that Retool is committed to. In particular, the self-serve for self-hosted approach is a welcome improvement. Cheers!
Jamie Cuffe
Thanks @tela - really appreciate it! Big launch for us and a commitment to giving developers like us the ability to self-serve self-host
Andrew spencer
@tela Thanks for the comment! I totally understand that perspective. To add a little detail to Jamie's explanation, when I was applying to Retool I worked at a big company where I never could've tried retool because I couldn't access my data sources. That experience blocked me from using Retool, so at Retool I worked with the team to experiment with a self service version of on prem. Everyone at Retool was so bought into the idea because we've always wanted it to be easy to anyone to deploy Retool. Anyways, thanks for sharing how our timing may have contributed to a potentially different narrative. We'll definitely keep that in mind for future launches.
tela
@andrew_spencer I can absolutely confirm the need. I have a contract running product at a large enterprise where we handle sensitive financial data, and an externally hosted solution wasn't even viable enough for me to raise. It's a smart GTM play that enables land-and-expand. Thanks for the additional context!

Solid tool to create amazing dashboards easily so the whole team can do the technical stuff. Would recommend.
Eduardo Soubihe
Retool customer for a long time here. Can't say enough good things about them. Great platform to build internal tools and POCs quickly

@ebsalberto Really appreciate the comment! Thanks!
Jamie Cuffe
@ebsalberto thanks for supporting us from the beginning!

Hey folks! One of the makers here - one of the reasons I'm particularly excited about this launch is the amount of work we put in behind the scenes to make this a (hopefully!) joyful dev experience. From our single-command deployment script to the one-click AWS deployment to extensive K8S support, we've made it super easy to install Retool onto your infrastructure. Can't wait for you all to try this out, and as always, looking forward to hearing any and all feedback on these flows!
Jamie Cuffe
@hirday_gupta It's been awesome working with you so far on creating the best self-hosted offering! Your bar for customer experience is second to none and has created a great experience for our users. And more to come!
Steven Schmatz
This is huge news @retool! Plus shoutout to the interesting blog post: https://retool.com/blog/building...
Jamie Cuffe
Thanks @stevenschmatz - we love working with you and the team at On Deck. (I was also ODF2 and huge fan of everything you've built).
Jamie Cuffe
Curious to hear if there were particular section of the post you found insightful / anything you'd like to see more of?
Toby Urff
Our team here at Impala have used Retool's self-hosted offering for a little over 1.5 years and it has democratised (I know, buzzword!) building nifty internal tools for everyone working here. Can't recommend it enough!
Jamie Cuffe
Thanks @tobiasurff! We love working with you and the Impala team!
Andrew spencer
Hey everyone! @cuffejamie @hirday_gupta @kevin_garcia1 @dvdhsu and I are excited to share self hosted Retool with you! I'm especially excited for this launch because when I tried to use Retool before joining, I couldn't since my company's data was only accessible inside our network. That blocked me from using Retool, so when I joined I wanted to make it so anyone, regardless of where your data is, could get started on Retool and build useful apps. Until today, if your data was only accessible inside your network, you couldn't try out Retool without getting our help deploying. Now, you can deploy Retool in your own environment in just a few minutes. Please reach out to our team if you have any feedback or would like any help getting started!
Girdharee Saran

Sid Puri
@giri Thanks Girdharee! Do let us know if you need any help in trying it out!

@giri Thank you! We have an amazing design team.

Retool — ripping control from inefficient/incompetent IT operations teams for years and putting it back in the hands of business owners.

Thanks @73mikebravo - we love working with you and the team at Neo4j!

One major benefit in this offering is making it easier for developers to fit into IT, security and compliance practices while still selecting tools that help them move fast. Being able to connect to you live data fast and securely i tantamount for building successful POCs that align business and eng stakeholders around what to build and how to deliver fast.
Patrick Westhoven
I've wanted a tool like retool since I started working in 2013, but I was never able to fully wrap my head around what it would be or how it would work. I went from 0 experience in front end and only analytical experience in backend to developing entire tools that my team uses every day.

Matthew Abt
Can you use Re-tool to build Web apps? If not now , when will you be able to?
Andrew spencer
@matthew_abt Hey! Right now Retool is pretty focused on making it really easy to make internal tools. We shine on use cases that involve internal users writing to databases and APIs. We offer a feature to have public apps that aren't authenticated, but these are often used for dashboards or public uploads, not full websites. External applications is in our long term vision, but we're going to focus on internal tools for the foreseeable future.
Jamie Cuffe
@matthew_abt curious to hear more about your use case? We do have a number of customers using Retool for semi-external use cases like partner portals, outsourced data enrichment, managing contractors, etc
Matthew Abt
@cuffejamie Got it ,, thanks for clarifying. Yes I would be looking to use it for full stack web applications such a marketplace.
Manik Uddin
I am a customer from long time here. I want to say in a word that this is the great platform to build internal tools.
