👋 Ahoy hunters and makers,
As the world changes in times of the pandemic, businesses are having to quickly adapt, not only for their consumers but also to protect their employees. Many companies are needing to implement full work-from-home policies, and support their staff during this change.
During this time, we wanted to help by sharing some of our top tips for transitioning to a fully remote company. As we adjust to our new normal, some of these tips might outlast the lockdown as we begin to interact as teams again.
📘 In this short guide, you can find tips and tricks that can help you transition to a remote set up.
📋 + We've put together free checklists to download for the most common processes (you can find them at the end of the PDF guide)
- Remote Employee Onboarding
- Home office set up
- Transition to temporarily remote setup
- Onboarding new Slack members
- Covid-19 Employee Health Check
- Remote team building
- Boost social interactions in a remote set up
- Prepare managers for remote setup
Thanks,
Tomas from AhoyTeam
@hellodusko Absolutely yes! … I've been collecting good "social cards" (is that what you call them too?) … I mean the 1200x600 (600x300) twitter-card / og-images. Would love to see your process, you are making good ones!
@hellodusko@rowemore Thanks Rowe, illustrations are done by my friend, but all other designs from cover, to the book layout is all me. Small startup with designer being a founder has its advantages :)
@hellodusko Excellent. 1) What apps did you use? 2) how did you do the book cover mockup (so it looks like a physical book) 3) How do you do your screenshots and lay them out like that? … THANKS for answering!
@rowemore All I use is Sketch and Photoshop. Would you be interested in an article on how to launch on PH, describing even how making assets that works and proving some templates?
@jamiegalbreath hey man, thanks. Friend of mine did them. Unfortunately he doesn't have an online portfolio. But, if you need some illustrations ping me on tomas @ ahoyteam.com and I'll do the intro.
@vladojsem I would say getting rid of the habits from office environment, that everything needs to be so hands-on right away, and the concept of "asynchronous work" could be tough to understand and adopt in larger organisations.
@hellodusko thanks. it makes sense what you write - that habits need to change together with the transition. how would you motivate the employees to work in a new way?
@hellodusko@vladojsem There is a group of people that will be excited that don't need to commute, that they can spend time with their kids at home, or introverts who are happy that they don't need to be in open-space offices.
I think motivation during this crisis is difficult and probably more focused about ensuring the stability and support to employees. But once things get to normal and being remote is not "staying in quarantine at home while my kids can't go to school" I think the idea of asynchronous work if done right will be a huge motivational factor for employees.
@raju_ahmed6 yes, not all of them but many could. I believe any company size or industry can find at least one tip to try and apply when they transition to remote even if it's temporarily.
@chantaljoyce true, sadly everyone who's working remotely for a year or two is now an expert and I can see courses and paid training everywhere.
Our whole team has been part of remote companies for last 5-6 years and we've experienced the pain of remote setup when there weren't many resources and best-practices. I've interviewed leaders in companies like Dribbble, InVision, Automattic, GitHub for my first remote book https://www.producthunt.com/post...
Not saying we're the ultimate expert, but advices we're giving are what we've been struggling with and looked/tried to solve.
For the ultimate remote tips I would also check what folks are GitLab and Zapier are sharing.
@mihai_cepoi Mostly talking processes (especially in the attached checklists) and almost all tips mentioned in the book are applicable to adopt through Slack.
If you wanna go deeper on changing products and processes from office to distributed teams, I'm more than happy to show you what we're building at AhoyTeam.
Thanks for putting this together. The checklist for Remote company retreat sounds interesting, do you have any additional tips for virtual events like that?
@neilbeltran if a company used to have on-site retreats before and switching to remote ones now -> one thing is nailing down the structure and agenda but it's good to realise a lot of employees enjoyed the travel+location on those live retreats. So, having an extra benefit and bonus to give to everyone like 2 days vacation, $$ extra budget for something... could help out get the team excited even more about "virtual retreat"
I see you promote AhoyTeam inside of the book and checklist as a tool to automate these workflows and processes. A sneaky way to do it, but well done :)
@reiddaugherty heh :) we're trying to do as much content as possible for free, but at the end of the day we also want to help you automate these processes and get more users to our AhoyTeam app :)
@aubreyhansen Our core platform AhoyTeam is a workflow automation tool helping remote managers automate their routine processes. Mainly through Slack, soon with MS Teams.
As we provide free tips how to transition to remote without a need of using a special tool for it, we also want to give you additional value to use these free tips and apply them through AhoyTeam.
@dennisbrooks3 thanks, as I mentioned to some folks before. Don't hesitate to contact me at tomas @ ahoyteam.com if you need additional advice or help with these checklists.
@lancewarren2 Totally. And I think I mentioned it before. You can go use this resource without a need to signup for any new tool. What AhoyTeam can do is just an extension we offer to help you automate some of the remote processes.
Amazing! Thank you for creating such a great thing! It is especially important for the current shift in the world that affects both our private and professional lives. Of course, it also triggers effectiveness and productivity... I believe that it is still very strange for many of us to adopt on remote working-life-style... I am sure this will be an amazing guide to fit better into the current situations! ^_^ Congratulations on the launch!^_^
