Emmanuel Nataf, one of the founders of Reedsy here! If you don't know us, we're a community of 50,000 authors and freelance professionals. We started out 3 years ago. We're not a unicorn (and might never be one), but we've helped authors create over 2,000 high-quality books. Our objective is to inspire more people to follow their paths and share their stories with the world.
To do that, we decided to launch #IWriteBecause and ask famous writers why they write in short 1-minute videos. For every video we receive, we will donate $10 to Room to Read, a non-profit organization that seeks to provide girls in Africa and Asia with access to education.
To kickstart the campaign, we got about 40 influential writers to share videos with us, including David Heinemeier Hansson (NYT bestselling author of Rework and Remote), Mark Dawson (bestselling author of the John Milton assassin thriller series) and Hailey LeBlanc (BookTuber).
The result is pretty cool: https://reedsy.com/iwrite. Now, we're going to find out if we can reach our target of 1,000 videos and make a $10,000 donation to Room to Read.
Any questions? Ask me anything!
@emmanuelnataf This is wonderful. It's a shame we didn't get a chance to meet while I was in London, as we keep crossing virtual paths. Such a great project, and such a wonderful idea for content... loving the approach you guys are taking. Let's catch up soon :)
@siahouchangnia We'll be running this until end of the month, and are already getting lots of videos :) The more funds we can raise for Room to Read, the better.
@widawskij Thanks! We had writers from very different backgrounds contribute to #IWriteBecause. I guess David Heinemeier Hansson (Creator of Ruby on Rails, Founder & CTO at Basecamp (formerly 37signals), NYT Best-selling author of REWORK and REMOTE) is one of the most famous contributors!
His video is here: https://blog.reedsy.com/iwritebe...
Huge props for doing this. I love seeing projects that encourages people to get out and read books. Is there a specific type of author or genre you're targeting with this platform?
@taylor_wescoatt We do that on a regular basis via blog posts — see here: https://insights.bookbub.com/com...
Other than that, we regularly run webinars or Facebook lives with a selection of our pros to answer authors' questions
@alexandra_linkilaw Absolutely! We're working on a post that'll feature the best ones. In the meantime, you can check out the Youtube playlist, ordered by "popularity" :)
