Quantitative data doesn't tell you why. On-page surveying allows you to figure exactly what people are thinking right in the moment. This helps you understand why people do or don't do things. This helps you create winning experiments and make better informed improvements.
Your customers are the best "marketers" you have if you know how to extract the right data from them. Insights gained from customers can get you so many wins by just asking a simple question to those who land on your site. This is a homer statement since I'm currently with Qualaroo but my favorite aspect of the Qualaroo product is how unobtrusive it is, some surveys that pop up ruins my entire experience visiting the website. Qualaroo surveys are small and doesn't interfere with anyone using your site. Plus all the personalization you can do with the surveys are pretty cool too.
