Hi, Product Hunt! 👋 We're Threadloom, the makers of Primary. We're excited to launch with you today! 🚀 Primary takes unfiltered, raw product reviews buried deep in forums across the web, and brings them to shoppers in a free and easy-to-use browser extension. Here’s why we're doing this: (1) Product reviews are unreliable, and (2) shoppers want to shop without being sold to. Primary casually pops up in your browser (think Honey) with real reviews from enthusiasts who tell it like it is – the good, the bad, and the ugly. This helps shoppers make the best purchase decision, saving them time & money. ⏱️💰 Primary currently works on 225 categories on Amazon and eBay (mostly hard goods, i.e., not yet media or soft goods/apparel), and 300 additional retail sites. We look forward to your feedback. Thanks! 🙏

Primary is a very smart add-on that allows you to view information and opinions about different musical equipment through forums and Reddit, it is very simple to use and it is absolutely a must if you are looking for new musical gear!
Paul Lee
@dumodal Thanks for letting us interview you. :)
Roo de Guzman
Primary is a very useful tool for ‘gearheads’ and folks researching musical equipment. Aside from doing the regular spec research and due diligence Primary enables you to see relevant opinions and insights through other outlets - i.e forums, and specific sites about gear. It’s unobtrusive, a snap to install and use - and most importantly - relevant and effective information. It gives the potential buyer decision points in purchasing a product. It’s a really good and effective tool.
Alex Wilsey
@ruexdog Glad you find it helpful! We definitely had “gear heads” in mind throughout the development process. It’s our goal to help users make better product choices.

It's about time...Several decades into the Internet and only now does someone finally leverage the wisdom of forum posters to drive ecommerce. Could take the pain out of the online shopping experience for so many consumers. May be transformational for many categories of products and sellers of higher-ticket niche items.
Paul Lee
@lee_clancy1 We believe forums are one of the most undervalued assets on the Internet.
Liordino dos Santos Rocha Neto
Primary is a very pleasant to use extension that gives you the oportunity to get real user reviews from foruns and reddit users on specific music gear that you're planning to buy. From my perspective it helped a lot because frequently the gear isn't available to be tested in person, and having the oportunity to read these reviews is the next best thing after testing them for yourself, on my opinion. That said, of course you could just do your research manually, but in my experience using Primary saved me a lot of time and led me straight to useful data about what I was planning to buy, saving me some hours of googling and forum/reddit searching. In the end I already got a new guitar with Primary's help, and I'm very happy with it!
Alyssa Caulley
@liordino Wow, what a great story. Helping people make the best decision for themselves while saving time was a big part of our brainstorming at the beginning of this product. It's fun to see that realized!
Timothy Chan
@liordino It's great to hear this has helped you acquire a new guitar! As a software developer on Primary and also a bass player and sound engineer, we have seen and have been amazed at how much helpful and valuable discussions about music gear is out there, and I'm so happy we could help pass that on to you :)
Liordino dos Santos Rocha Neto
@ahtimsir yeah, there's a lot of discussions online, and my personal opinion is that if one day we suffered for the lack of information, now we suffer for information overload, and not all information is good, so it's really nice to have something to help curate these things faster.
Drew Yamamoto
This is exciting. My love of forums and online shopping come together! Real reviews that are useful - that's a flashback to 2010!
Mouse
@drewyamamoto Everything that is old is new again? Haha! Forums are an amazing resource when shopping. Glad we could make your online experience that much better! Thank you for supporting Primary!
Greg H
Great product made by a great team. Primary sifts through forums and reddit for the best information about music gear. It really goes beyond star reviews I can't wait to see this expanded to other categories.
Alex Wilsey
@_gh_ Hang tight, we're expanding our list of supported categories daily. It's a tricky problem because each category/interest presents a new challenge. We're constantly iterating to try and learn how users discuss different types of products.
Lars Valja
Smart idea, will make shopping easier. I tend to spend hours looking for reviews and experiences on reddit for items that are expensive. Hope you build this company sustainably and don't sell out customer data :fingerscrossed:
Paul Lee
@lars_valja Thanks for the feedback. We've never sold any user data and don't plan to. If we ever do, I grant you permission to publicly throw a pie in my face. 🥧 We generate revenue through product widgets that publisher forums embed on their sites. They share the affiliate revenue with us.
Alyssa Caulley
Hi Product Hunt! I'm on the engineering team here at Threadloom. It's been very fun to build, and even more fun to hear from folks who find it helpful. I'm excited to share it here and listen to feedback from y'all!
Paul Lee
PH, @alyssa_c123 runs the engine room here, so if you have any questions about how the eng team works here, feel free to ask her.

Primary is such a cool add-on! Normally, I’m a little wary of using just any add-on but this one in particular is a breath of fresh air and I’m loving using it! I’m always looking at new gear and always chasing the “tone” I’m after. Being able to get real world opinions and reviews via reddit and other forums is a must! I look for those and trust those reviews and Primary makes it so easy to obtain that trustworthy information! I use it daily and will continue to use it going forward. Do yourself a favor and get it and experience the magic it provides!
Timothy Chan
@d20 Thanks for the love! I'm a software developer on Primary, but also being a bass player myself, I agree with you because it's a never-ending quest find the right tone, and it's something that the musician community understands. We're happy that you find Primary such a trustworthy tool to connect you with that community!
George Chong
I was looking for some gear for my bass and I was really surprised to find a lot of reviews out there. Usually, if there's no Amazon review, I don't have much to go on other than some friends who play too. Anyway, I picked up a nice amp through some of those recs.
Alyssa Caulley
@groqtheconq This is super useful feedback! I've been surprised by how many people are finding Primary useful for products that don't have reviews (more common than I thought in niche areas).
Timothy Chan
@groqtheconq It's great to hear this has helped you purchase a new amp! While I'm a software developer on Primary, I'm also a bass player and sound engineer whom others come to for recommendations for music gear, so I understand how we musicians like to draw on the community to get gear. I'm so glad Primary is able to help you connect to that community, and I hope you enjoy your new amp!
Ammi Tan
I'm usually opening a ton of separate tabs to look at reviews of products. It's nice to not have to do that and see something that harnesses the use of the platforms already out there.
Paul Lee
@mypeople02 Thanks for the feedback! 1/2 the team works on the frontend, and 1/2 works on the backend, in order to try to make the extension work as smoothly as possible.
Kyle Peschel
It's like going shopping with an elite connoisseur; and you don't even need to put on pants.
Alex Wilsey
@kyle_peschel That really is best way to shop isn't it? Jokes aside, my theory is someone out there knows what I need. With Primary we do our best to connect you to their recommendations and advice.
Aaron Rackoff
They make it super easy to get more information on products that might not have very many reviews on the e-commerce site.
Paul Lee
@aaron_rackoff One of my favorite examples is the Breitling Superocean 42mm on eBay. 0 reviews, but 100s of discussions on forums like watchuseek.com. @alex_wilsey will be turning watches on for Primary soon.

Hi Product Hunt! I'm on the ops team here at Threadloom. As a creator and devoted user of forums it's exciting to hear how folks are using Primary. After decades of hiding, content is being brought to the surface to help make decisions on the products that you use in your daily life. I'm excited to help bring this product to the market, and hope you will be to once you try it!
Paul Lee
PHers, if you have any questions about forums, @mouseindahouse has started or run over 100 forums.
Jay Swartzfeger
Threadloom gets it. Primary doesn't feel like it was coded by MBAs and marketers but real users that actually *use* the internet, particularly web forums. I'm a gear nut and forum hound and Primary is invaluable. Two key things with Primary -- 1) it's unobtrusive while being incredibly powerful and most importantly 2) it respects me as a user. I don't feel like I'm the product. I don't feel like I'm being marketed to or monetized or having unauthorized fingers reach into my wallet. Primary is refreshing in that it brings back the spirit of "old school" internet -- it's about the users. Chrome, Brave et al need to bundle this as a default with their browser.
Alyssa Caulley
@swartzfeger Wow, your comment just made my day. I'm so glad the respect for people and authenticity comes through in the product, not just values we hold that don't get realized. Thanks!
Ted Fong
This is a great idea and I can't wait until this gets rolled out into more categories. I do a lot of research before buying on reddit so bringing this data in plus from other sources that I didn't know about or don't often check is awesome! Please keep us in the loop when you add new categories!
Alex Wilsey
@masterjedi Will do. We are constantly learning how people talk about different types of products and are adding new categories daily. Each category has it's own quirks and challenges. If you have any retailers, categories or hobbies you'd like us to prioritize please let us know!
Megan Levering Lanz
Such an easy addition to my Chrome browser for such an incredible reward. I can absolutely tell when brands are leaving fake reviews on their products just to boost ratings, but honestly, I’m lazy and I don’t want to scour the internet or my personal network to try to find the truth. Primary is perfect because it does that for me, and it’s in a familiar motion for me to use - a free Chrome extension.
Raquel Romano
@meglevlanz Yeah, it's super tiring to spend a long time doing searches and still not be sure whether it makes sense to buy something. We're hoping people spend less time searching and more time learning from others who have experience and are willing to help out.
Ben Choi
Primary does for me what usually takes a lot of hunting around on forums and the backpages of google search results. A really great tool to get the info I need for considered purchases!
Paul Lee
@benjichoi Thanks for the feedback!

Primary is an incredibly nifty tool, and as one reviewer has already mentioned, it's kind of crazy that we haven't had anything like it until now. It caters especially well to guitarists who are always on the hunt for new gear for that elusive "tone". With so many fake reviews, it's practically a standard operating procedure to comb forums and reddit for authentic opinions on gear. The best part about Primary is that you don't have to switch to another window or tab to get the inside scoop on whatever gear you're shopping for. It saves time and makes the whole gear hunt more enjoyable. I love it and will continue to use it.
Paul Lee
@p_h1 I shop similarly, which was part of the reason I was excited to work on Primary. I love forum perspectives, but it's hard to find them when its an area I don't know well. I started adding "reddit" to my searches, but I was still spending a lot of time finding the good stuff; and I didn't have anything similar I could use for forums. Of all the feedback we get, the biggest one is that we ave people time, which I love, because it means people can spend more time doing what they love.
