Not a comment about the PS5 directly, but on the way they presented it: I'm surprised how much time the video ad focused on the box, and not on the controller. No one cares about the box - it sits under the tv, collects dust… Everyone cares about the controllers. That's what we hold in our hands. That's how we experience the game. Why not give the gamers a thrill of what's gaming going to be like.

I think the design will grow on most people. I looks intentionally "futuristic", kinda like the Cybertruck. Sony has been using this hardware design style ever since introducing the PSVR headset in 2016.

The Digital version (diskless) looks very good but don't see a reason to limit my options. I almost never buy physical, but, sometimes I do. Shame no price, no launch date, no news on online, nothing.

@vladyslav_c Haven't used a gaming console in a while, when using disks particularly with bigger games, are you not still downloading most of the content off the internet anyway? If that's the case, I'm just surprised that people are still buying & selling disks instead of buying content solely online - I guess for sharing disks with friends and family?

@calum Yes and no. A lot of the times there's a "day 1" patch to download but the size is not the same. But imagine if you had to download the game and also the patch. Basically you would not get to play on release day haha. Then there's another issue which is PlayStation servers which can't really survive the load. Big game releases (and big games in size) like Red Dead Redemption 2 would take eons to download on the PS4. But the thing with disks is that it's still good for resell and for leding/borrowing. On PS4 I buy 90% digital, but sometimes a friend lends me his game, or I buy that cheaper used game. Hence why I'm saying, no point in limiting the options (unless the price difference is big of course)

@vladyslav_c Right, that makes a lot of sense, thanks for the explanation! Haven't played on a console since the PS2 and since played on a PC so I've never really had to worry about slow download speeds or with PSN in general. Surely if you can re-sell disks, it's a no-brainer to buy the standard PS4 as opposed to the diskless version then. Presumably you can't re-sell a digital version of a game, right? 😅
Vladyslav Chernyshov
@calum Not sure how it will be on PS5 as the event didn't really talk about most of the questions people had, but, on the PS4 there's one advantage to a digital only style which is the gameshare. While you can't re-sell a digital game, you can buy it "halfsies" with a friend. Both consoles get the full game and both consoles can play at the same time, and or online, etc. I do that with a friend, either we split the cost or I buy one game he buys another. And yeah, I know what you mean I also game a lot of PC and that has been 100% digital since early days of steam for me.

@vladyslav_c Ah that's good at least! Exactly, I've considered moving over to console because a lot of my friends play on the PS4, but losing my Steam library and the shared games I've had from my friends through family sharing on Steam is too much of a loss. As well as paying for a PSN subscription versus free multiplayer play on Steam. Will have to see how the PS5 tries to combat this though!

While it does look like a Wifi Router, excited to see how it performs against the new Xbox and whether Sony plans to introduce a new PSVR headset for the PS5!

I'm very excited for PS5 specifically because of what game developers are saying about it. Sony, and specifically Mark Cerny, have done exhaustive customer research to identify friction in the development process and relentlessly focused on killing that friction.

As I am expected to purchase this, I do hope the price is reasonable! Not entirely sure for the rationale for keeping it a secret.
