Looks awesome Christina. Gonna recommend Platejoy to a friend who is just learning to cook. Do you have a favorite cookbook for beginners learning the art & science of cooking?
Neha Jain
PlateJoy is a neat idea. Very well executed. I would prefer an option to choose low-carb+vegan option or low-glycemic + vegan option. That wasn't an option now, despite that I loved how much @platejoy has simplified the choice.
Christina Bognet
@_nehajain @platejoy Hi Neha - we can support vegetarian + low carb, but getting enough protein and fat on a low carb diet that doesn't allow animal products is tough. Hope to have it someday soon. Alternatively, you can select our vegan plan and omit pasta + bread via our exclusion ingredients. In that case, you'll rarely see more than 50g of carbs in any recipe and most of the carbs are coming from fruits and vegetables.
Erik Torenberg
Looks awesome. Can you tell the story behind how this specific product came about?
Christina Bognet
@eriktorenberg Hey Erik! Enjoy your podcasts. I started PlateJoy after losing 50 lbs and wanting to help other eat better. We wanted to make sure we could serve a large audience (not just silicon valley) so expanded beyond our delivery product into a consumer app that everyone can use at their local grocery store. You can still send your ingredient list to Instacart, as mentioned above, but you can just as easily take it to the store with you in a small town in Pennsylvania. We also wanted to focus more on accommodating very specific diets (like low FODMAP for people with stomach issues or prediabetic patients) and have greatly improved the functionality for these users. :)
Erik Torenberg
@cbognet you should come on the podcast sometime!

I just tried out the planner - extremely well designed with some great looking recipies, but in all honesty, I think "kid-friendly" is a pretty massive stretch for most of the meals. At least with the options I picked - I didn't get one back I know my children would eat :) Still, a really cool looking service, and would definitely be something that I would just try out if it were planning only for me and my wife.
Christina Bognet
@jesse_wallace Thanks for this feedback, Jesse! We promise the recipes are kid tested and approved so you might be surprised :) But if there are things you know your kids won't eat, you can exclude any ingredient(s) at all from your personalization quiz (e.g., chia seeds) and you won't see meals that contain them.
Tom
Way to go guys, love the nutritional aspect of this!
Christina Bognet
@tommytcchan Thanks so much, Tommy! Would love to have you give it a try.
Jared Schaffer
Love the product/service, but I'm not going to pay for something before trying it. Especially something as hit/miss as meal recommendations
Christina Bognet
@jbschaff Hey Jared! If you'd like a trial, just email me christina@

I absolutely love PlateJoy. I've been using it for the past 8 months and have gotten a bunch of my friends to use it too. It's been super helpful in a lot of ways: --way more variety in my cooking/meals --adds and element of surprise to meal planning (I look forward to seeing new meals for the week) --helps me stay healthy despite dietary restrictions/food allergies --makes grocery shopping more efficient/less stressful --save money grocery shopping because I'm not buying random stuff I also love that PlateJoy really cares about its users. They NPS customers regularly, and their founder has personally responded to my comments. They're always adding new features based on users' feedback. Basically, it's super affordable and awesome, and y'all should all try it.
Christina Bognet
@cmseyler Camille! You're the best. Thank you so much for this <3 And good to know you don't mind our regular NPS surveying :D
Gabriel Lewis
@cmseyler Nice I'll add this to my Healthy Diet 2.0 collection https://www.producthunt.com/@gab...

the "how is works" is too hard to find. felt forced to put an email. was disturbing. without all the raving here in PH would've closed the page in 5 seconds.
Christina Bognet
@danr_4 Hope you ended up getting through okay, Dan! Thanks in advance for checking us out.

Game. Changer.

I've used PlateJoy on and off for almost a year now. It has been a wonderful experience to see how much they have grown and responded to customer requests (such as fitbit and instacart integration). As a vegetarian it can get kind of boring eating the same old everyday, and some or the recipies in cookbooks can be somewhat daunting. PlateJoy has assisted me in cooking some amazing food, friends area always surprised and asking me for recipes. I really do enjoy cooking, but going to the grocery store to just buy for one meal based on one recipe is never truly effective or efficient. With PlateJoy I feel like I'm able to shop for a whole week, without thinking too much about waste of produce or what I am going to make. Also the cost is super minimal. PlateJoy has literally changed my eating habits - in the sense that I rarely even want to eat out if I know I can make a better meal at home.
Christina Bognet
@avnivyas Avni!! You're going to make us cry! This is exactly why we started the company. Thank you so much for the kind words.
Christopher Sherrod
Great to look up your shopping list for a new menu while at the store, can't wait to Instacart comes to my neighborhood so I can click a couple of buttons and have my whole list delivered.
Krystha Dart
@chrissherrod I actually just used the Instacart feature for the first time this week - and I think it's great, but one thing that was tricky is not being able to switch to a different grocery store once all the ingredients had been ported over from Platejoy. There are some things that are so expensive at Whole Foods when Safeway has just as good Organics in some departments now.
Christina Bognet
@krystha_tweets @chrissherrod Thanks guys! @Krystha - we can help with this - our CTO @bluejade will send you a follow-up email. :)
Scott ET Herren
Hi @cbognet, is there a way to see an overview of the nutrition for each day in my meal queue? These recipes look great but I want to make sure I'm getting my macros. Thanks, this looks amazing!
Christina Bognet
@scottrepreneur Hey Scott - to see nutritional info for any specific meal, you can click the [i] on the meal in your queue. Once you checkout and our algorithms generate your first menu, you'll get an overview of nutritional info for that menu as well. We can always tweak things if it's not working by increasing portion sizes, etc.
Scott ET Herren
@cbognet Also, it really wants me to like sweet potatoes for some reason and I just can't agree with that lol.
Christina Bognet
@scottrepreneur : ) You can remove sweet potatoes from your menu easily at platejoy.com/personalization (just search for the ingredient in the question that asks about exclusions).
Danny Fiorentini
Hey @cbognet - sounds cool. Do you partner with any other nutritional companies as well to provide more intricate/unique superfoods & supplements; or is everything based from what can be purchased at WholeFoods? Best of luck!
Christina Bognet
@dannyfiorentini Hey Danny! Whole Foods has over 20,000 different items these days, so creating nutritious menus from their ingredients provides a lot of good variety. And food is definitely the best source of micronutrients. Our nutrition coaches will also make supplementation recommendations based on your dietary preference (e.g., B complex for vegetarians and vegans). Thanks for the well wishes!
Danny Fiorentini
@cbognet Right ok - reason for the question was to see if you guys are going to partner with external companies as well as WholeFoods down the line if it makes sense, to provide additional specialty ranges.

Tomas Mazetti
Now a more important question: WHEN ARE YOU COMING TO STOCKHOLM?!
Christina Bognet
@tomasmazetti Hey Tomas! We have customers in Stockholm!! The Instacart integration won't work there, but everything else will :)
Lana
Can you adjust max net carbs or set nutrition limits per meal with plate joy?
Christina Bognet
@lanahelene Hey Lana! If you select the "low carb" plan, you'll see a question about how many carbs per meal you'd like to stay under (total carbs vs. net carbs, though, so I'd go a little higher). Beyond that, you can set calorie goals or enter your weight/activity level/gender and we'll optimize for you.
Vineet Shukla
I like the idea .... what is your strategy to scale this product as different region will have different eating habits / dishes ?
Christina Bognet
@_vineetshukla We have a good number of international users already but we're always adding new recipes to accommodate more users with different tastes.
Heidi Helen Pilypas
Sounds great from the comments. Downloaded the app in Australia to have a look, and it has a signup for current customers only. It doesn't have the option to create an account or see what it has to offer beforehand, so it's a delete for me.
Christina Bognet
@heidi_helen Hey Heidi - yes, you need to create an account via platejoy.com on web and then you can sign in via the app. Sorry the confusion - it's an iOS rule with a service like ours.
Daniel F Lopes
@cbognet I like the idea very much Christina. I was just a bit disappointed that you didn't have any kind of free plan? Or at least a trial of a month, so that we could test Platejoy more fully. Keep up the good work.
Christina Bognet
@danflopes Thanks so much for the feedback!
Christina Bognet
@danflopes We now offer a free 10 day trial for all!
