This was born out of a decade of working with investigative journalists: whenever we would work on a leak, the first question was: who are the interesting and important people that may be involved in this? What arms dealers or heads of state had hidden their funds offshore? While OpenSanctions began as a research tool, it is now also a building block for fintech/regtech companies required to perform know-your-customer/anti money laundering checks. We make high-quality data, and publish both the data and code base available openly for accountability. Next step: see this included in the backends of as many innovative products as possible!
