Hey Everyone,
One of my favorite hobbies is bringing people together. I especially love bringing great entrepreneurs together who are about to start, join, or just explore their next "thing." Think of this like a Global EIR community.
If this is you, fill out the form and let's jam! (100% Confidential :)
Would love to hear feedback!
Edit: YC, Slow, and Ludlow Ventures are our first "collaboration partners" signed up -- if you'd like to help host and/or sponsor email me at erik.torenberg@gmail.com. That would be VCs who meet great entrepreneurs before they start next co (if they opt-in), or great companies that want to meet top tech talent as they explore whether to start or join their next thing (if they opt-in :)
@eriktorenberg always had a feeling you were going to work on something like this :) –– often, it's the people you're around who influence what you end up working on (or whom you end up working on things with)
When people ask me how to break into the startup world, I tell them to get in a room and start talking and doing all they can to be helpful. Cheers to Erik for creating the room. We have all needed this for so long.
An On Deck brunch helped introduce me to the Valley. An On Deck dinner helped me connect the dots for my last move. The On Deck community makes up my personal advisory board. TL;DR - if you want to be inspired for your next idea and meet great people while doing it, you have to join On Deck.
HUGE thanks to @sethlouey for designing and building this site. This dude is a super talented designer and, ironically, is On Deck himself. Any startup would be lucky to work with Seth. Holler if you want an intro :)
Is the 'digital community' part of this a Slack group or similar? How are you connecting people from all over the world?
What does it take to be a host?
It says the community has to be small to be tight-knit, is there a limit of how many people can be involved? or does this grow and become a more tiered structure when more and more hosts starts taking other cities?
@bentossell Great Qs!
Re: Dinners, right now we're in SF, NYC, and LA, but as people volunteer to host in other cities we'll help them rally great groups of folks. To host, just apply and specify that you'd like to host on the app!
Re: Digital community, Slack group is a good MVP of this right now, but I'll be interested to find out through the application results what type of community and content people want.
I know this sounds vague -- it's an experiment :)
@eriktorenberg@bentossell For those of us living outside SF, Slack is a great MVP!
Do you know how you would address confidentiality on that platform? For example- if I'd want to connect with some other 'On-Deckers' not others?
I left one of these brunches with an angel investment, which ended up being doubled once we continued the conversation. Bottom line: if you have a soul that needs to make or move, you'll want to be in this tribe.
Dearest Erik (and PH community),
I'm thrilled to see you make this public. It so perfectly represents all of your amazing talents; connecting people, helping people, and bringing interesting people together. The energy you've put forth building deep and meaningful friendships will surely help make On Deck something special.
Over the years you've introduced me to some incredible entrepreneurs. I can't wait to meet more and find out what's on deck (see what I did there?)
jt
As an entrepreneur, I can say I would be using this constantly. Great people and great energy is something I always look out for, and personally I am a huge supporter of communities that enable and empower each other. I hope this becomes a real thing.
I went to a bunch of Erik's dinners after I left LivingSocial to explore my next move, and I met some great people who have become colleagues and friends as I've moved on to Lightspeed. I'm a big fan.
Great concept @eriktorenberg 👏👏👏 I'm very excited about potentially taking part in this community. I've found great value from similar events (Weave, Female Founder dinners, the YC soup dinner) being new in SF. Networking in this setting is a lot more valuable than attending random events.
@sethlouey Agreed! Would love to see this in Austin as well. There's a large, thriving tech community here that would definitely benefit by having On Deck around.
Seth - what brings you to Austin?
@whattheferguson want a change of scenery and expand my network in the startup world. Been in Upstate NY for awhile. Plus, my fiancée loves warm weather. :)
