Hey PH community 👋 Any aspiring chess players here? ♟️ I’m Samuel, chess player and maker of Noctie, which we’re excited to launch here today! As a kid, I had no one to play chess against or learn from. I wanted one of those physical chess computers that I saw in magazines. When I finally got hold of some chess software I quickly realised playing against computers is no fun 🤖 Twenty-five years later, and frustrated from my slow chess improvement using traditional means, I saw the opportunity to change this. I built a chess AI as a practice partner and tutor. One that plays just like a human at my own level, but also knows how stronger players play, so that it can give me feedback on how to improve 🚀 I think a lot about learning. I think the best way to learn almost anything is 1-on-1 tutoring. To learn effectively, we need practice and immediate feedback. But that’s hard to get from chess books and videos, and it’s even harder to get from online chess. What you need is a practice partner and teacher, someone who can offer the right level of challenge, testing your skills, and intertwine this with learning opportunities. That’s what we’ve tried to create with Noctie. Today, we’re a small team of tech and chess enthusiasts working to make Noctie into the best possible partner in your chess journey. So far, this is what we’ve accomplished: ✔️ Chess AI that accurately mimics human play from beginner to grandmaster ✔️ Instant color feedback after each move, based on humanlike intuition ✔️ Play the opening you like and learn the common responses and traps ✔️ Custom exercises after each game, based on your biggest mistakes Whether you're a beginner or experience chess player, we're excited to have more people like you try Noctie out and leave us some feedback and suggestions!

@samuel_sonning Will you consider to add the "AI coach" function? 🎉Congrats! We're launching "Cascad3 - A decentralized inspiration-driven publishing platform" on Product Hunt soon. Let's collaborate! I would appreciate your support and feedback by clicking the "Notify Me" button to stay tuned and be the first to know when Cascad3 debuts on the stage.👇 producthunt.com/products/cascad3 Thank you! Best regards, Yami

This might actually convince me to start playing. If only I had more time.. Awesome app guys, congrats!
Sabina Sonning
@jopie it convinced me :) What is the thing making you attracted to chess, and what is the thing holding you back? I'm super curious in the psychology/mythology around chess. Would love your input!
Viswanatha Reddy
Wow, Noctie sounds like an incredible tool for chess enthusiasts! I'm excited to give it a try and see how it can help me up my game. Congrats to the team on the launch!
Sabina Sonning
@viswanatha please let me know how it goes!
Ohans Emmanuel (remention.ai)
I love this! Coincidently, i was actively looking for something like this. I’ll certainly be giving it a try. Congrats on the launch 🚀
Samuel Sonning
@ohansemmanuel Thank you! I’d love to hear your feedback later and whether/how it differed from your expectations
Ohans Emmanuel (remention.ai)
@ohansemmanuel took a quick look 👀 Very well done! One minor improvement: after the initial rating, it’d be great to know what relative level you’ve been placed on, and what that means e.g., what’s “pawn 1” and how far away am I from perhaps “queen 1” etc.
Samuel Sonning
@ohansemmanuel Great suggestion!

Really good app. One recommendation. Colour coding helps in understanding the "type" of the move. But since this app is about "coaching", it would be great if you could "show" / "inform" players about the alternatives. Learning while playing, I believe helps retain the knowledge better.
Sabina Sonning
@csrameneni thank you for sharing your feedback. I love the idea of seeing and learning about alternatives as you play. We have just a light version of this hidden in the hint button. Did you try it? Either way I really appreciate you letting us know what would make it better and your expectations!
Chandra Shekhar
@sabina_sonning, didn't notice it. Probably you could highlight it?
Sabina Sonning
@csrameneni yes, it's very obscured right now. Thank you for pointing it out! Please try the way it behaves and get back to me if you have more thoughts on how to best get the insights during play. Means a lot!
Suryadathan E
That's it, I'm learning how to chess now. LOVE the idea of an owl as a mascot! Looking forward to seeing their avatar grow over time!
Sabina Sonning
@suryadathan thank you Suryadathan! I was a chess beginner at the start of this journey too. I'd love to hear about your experience learning through Noctie.
Suryadathan E
@sabina_sonning remind me to share my progress in a month haha
Sabina Sonning
@suryadathan WILL DO!
Samuel Sonning
@suryadathan :D The owl will take you to new chess heights!
Sean Thomas
@samuel_sonning Congratulations on launching Noctie. @andrew_brogden Noctie might be something you find interesting 👀
Andrew Brogden
@sean_t94 @samuel_sonning Thanks both. I just had a little go at the demo rating game, Looks great, will give it a proper go over the weekend.
Trent Kennelly
Already downloaded! No lie - my son is a chess nut and he's going to absolutely geek out over this. Thank you for such a great product!!
Samuel Sonning
@trent_kennelly Thanks! Hope your son will like it :)
JONNY
Oh, I really like this idea and the app overall! It's definitely something else than the regular chess bots, etc. Makes a lot of sense. Maybe I finally will learn to play chess for real this time, haha! 😄
Sabina Sonning
@javve thank you Jonny! I'm glad you can feel the difference between Noctie and a classical bot. Sometimes when I play I can really sense that she has a plan. It's pretty cool! I think it's a great place to start (safer to make stupid mistakes) but really built for deliberate practice. If you get hooked, let me know, I'd love to get more feedback on how we can improve learning.
Alexandra Öhrlund
The instant feedback has been a game changer for me. As a chess rookie, progressing has been frustrating - but being able to practice at my own level with Noctie has made all the difference. Excited to keep moving forward. Congratulations, team Noctie! 👏🏼
Samuel Sonning
@alexandra_ohrlund Thanks for the kind words Alexandra and best of luck with your chess journey!
Alexhander Törnqvist
@alexandra_ohrlund fully agreed, Noctie has made chess fun on a whole new level that helps you progress and get better at you own pace! Great app, congrats team Noctie! 👏
Unn Swanström
I never properly learned chess. Felt embarrassing that I couldn't remember what all the pieces did. And anyone who wants to play is always way way better than me. Feels fun that I'll finally have a tutor that can meet me on my level.
Sabina Sonning
@unnderbar thank you for sharing! I even dared to play my first unofficial tournament a while ago after building some confidence in Noctie first. It was humbling, but not as scary as it would have been before... Happy to hear any feedback further along your learning journey :)
Linda B
Great looking app, just started playing and I’m hooked! Can easily see how this will make me a better player.
Sabina Sonning
@linda_b2 so happy you like it Linda! Let me know if you find something that can be improved or a use case important to you that isn't covered. Real user input is what got us this far!
Richard
Talk about perfect timing...I've just fallen in love with chess, but I was clueless about where to begin or how to play. This is just the perfect opportunity. I'll be sure to try out this app.
Samuel Sonning
@nebulascout Glad to hear that Richard! Give us some feedback when you've tried it out :)
Sabina Sonning
@nebulascout you are not alone! Chess is in a continuous boom :) Please check in later and share you're experience, I really want to learn from you (beginner as well as GM:s).
Josefina Sonnhammer
I love this app! I have been playing chess since a kid, and these days I am always playing against people who keep winning over me, and I did not know how to improve my playing. Noctie has made it so simple for me to get hands-on practice, and I have already seen great results! Kudos to the guys behind Noctie!
Sabina Sonning
@josefina_sonnhammer1 Thank you so much for your positive feedback. Check back in when you start to beat them. I’d love to hear your reflections on what made the difference!
Gustav Tegby
The dynamic difficulty level is quite something, and the feedback system actually manages to make me feel like I’m improving in real time - VERY rewarding. This might turn out to be dangerously addictive 😅
Sabina Sonning
@gustav_tegby thank you for sharing! Implementing the instant feedback is really the moment I really knew we had something. I'm starting to see colors on regular boards now too :) (I recommend mixing your potential Noctie addiction with some over the board games with friends to get the most value out of your progress :D)
Gustav Tegby
@sabina_sonning I can see why, it feels like a game changer (bad pun intended). Yeah if I keep this up I think I’ll probably finally get my nerve up to start challenging actual people again. The only question now is whether I should tell my son about Noctie like a good father, or try to use it to possibly, finally get the upper hand again the next time we play…
Sabina Sonning
@gustav_tegby haha I think it's only fair that you both have the secret weapon. In the end, you actually have to do the practice too ;)
Erik Hansbo
Really nice AI to play against! I like the reviews as well, helps me figure out in what way I messed up my moves.
Sabina Sonning
@erik_hansbo Thank you Erik! So glad you like the reviews. Can you notice the difference from regular stockfish analysis?
Jonas Hansbo
Have played chess since early 1970s. My first experience with a chess computer was when my brother bought one of the first commercially available, Fidelity's Chess Challenger. I must have played 1000s of games against it. Since then I have played a wide variety of chess engines, even including the legendary Deep Blue on ICC. Starting mid 90s the engines got so strong, it was not much point in playing them for a result anymore. I played to learn, but the way the engines were playing was not so instructive, it was more like playing an alien life form. What's really exciting about Noctie is that it is the first machine that actually feels human in its way to play. Compared to other engines which you set to play at some predefined level, it doesn't play random bad moves to simulate human play, it feels more consistent in its play. It makes it a much more interesting opponent. Well done team Noctie, I think you have something unique here!
Samuel Sonning
@jonas_hansbo I'm so happy to hear about your experience, and truly echo the sentiment about an alien life form. There's just something uncannily off about chess engines. Thanks for the positive words Jonas!
Kaspars Juhnevics
It took around 2 min for Noctie to win :D Looks really nice! I won't become the next Grandmaster but Live Insights looks like something which definitely can help to improve. Nice work!
Sabina Sonning
@kaspars_juhnevics1 cool that you tried and enjoyed it (in spite of the quick beating this round)! :) Would love to hear more if you continue practice.

Really nice app! Played a lot of chess with grandpa as a kid and this will help me to take my game to the next level. That without having to use my kid strategies on other users while learning...
