Handshake — Put promises on the blockchain
Featured
41

People shake hands all the time, but we're not very good at it. Think flaky friends, clients, and deals that fall through.. here's a better way to shake!

Handshake is an app that transcribes commitment into code, and immortalizes promises on the blockchain. This creates an eternal, unchangeable record of intent - without fear of forgery or fraud.

UPDATE (August 2018): Hey guys! Handshake is no longer on the app store - we are working on integrating these beloved features into a new, bigger dApp - that is all about exchanges/agreements of every kind. It's got prediction markets, cash to coin exchanges, and lots more coming soon! Mobile web only, so no downloads and no sign ups! Check out the new evolved Handshake: www.ninja.org/prediction Duy --- Hi Hunters! Since medieval times, we’ve tried a range of spit, pen and electronic methods to establish trust and record commitment - all with varying degrees of success. So, this is our contribution to the history of the handshake. We put it on the blockchain! This release is for the everyday verbal agreements, informal IOUs and friendly challenges between friends, partners and sworn enemies - that keep society chugging along. Handshake lives on the testnet because we really wanted it to be accessible and usable by everyone - so no gas fees, no tokens, and no coins required. It does take two to handshake, so we hope you’ll give it a go! We are a little nervous and super excited to hear what you think. Make yours the first cryptographic handshakes in history! Duy

@duyhtq looks cool! There's a typo on the first image of your App Store page btw. The word "penalty" is spelt wrong.

@anodigital good catch! submitting the new image to the app store now :)

@duyhtq I would like to continue the usage of the app, is there something some idea to make it open source etc? or can you recommend a replacement?
Vivek Sancheti
This is awesome app. @duyhtq I would like to interview your team and feature it on cryptoground.com What would be the right way to send the questionnaire?

@evivz thanks so much for the kind words! you can send any questions over to handshake@autonomous.nyc - the team is excited to speak with you.

Interesting thing

@albyantoniazzi thank you, i hope you find it useful!

You said 'this release' - what's next then? Are you going to move to the mainnet?
K
Maker
@nguy_n_tr_ng_long we want to introduce payment options and more complex contracts, so we'll need the support of the mainnet. depending on the demand for these options, maybe handshake will always live on the testnet, or we'll migrate in about a month. thanks!
Jordan Jackson
this is pretty neat ... and a consumer facing way of easily understanding some basic uses of smart contracts. Easy to extrapolate out into a "handshake" with someone halfway across the globe *if* x happens .. just like how amazon started with books.
K

@jordan_jackson thank you :) this first release primarily aims to make the technology accessible by targeting informal ious and verbal contracts, so we can keep building on it with the broader goal of more comprehensively 'reinventing' agreements. we really appreciate your vote of confidence!
rock_q7
Could really see this taking off. As a freelancer, i've been verbally offered so many jobs from clients that ended up flaking. Now i'll just send them a handshake before any project!
K
Maker
@kiencd cool! many of our team come from freelance backgrounds and this was definitely a pain point we wanted to target :)
Wayne Arthington
Cool. Before I download it, does it take long to set up and shake? The process for crypto apps is sometimes kinda tedious..
K
Maker
@d_qu_c_d_t not long at all - you'll just need to sign in with your email address and create an agreement like you would write a text - then just tap to sign and send!

Great!! So if my girlfriend doesn't clean her side of the bedroom like she promised, i'll have a permanent record of her slovenliness and lack of accountability!!
K
Maker
@bos_hieu exactly ;) the blockchain hides no broken promises!

Great concept, I would want to use this ass a metamask web3 dapp. No app installs, No fb connection, No ethereum deposits !

@kaibakker that's a great insight Kai. much more like the new internet. thanks for your feedback! you've given the team something to think about :)

Thanks for sharing. To use handshake, do my friends already need to have it?
K
Maker
@ha_van_nh_t_quang no, they'll receive an email telling them that you want to shake their hand, and directing them to download the app. once that's done, they'll open the app to find your handshake waiting for them! super easy.

This app is a great introduction to blockchain technology and cryptocurrency as the userface is simple and its so easy to use.

Pros:

Quirky and fun idea

Cons:

none yet

Great product. I love seeing more blockchain products being design for everyday use. As a blockchain writer I get pitched a lot of ideas, that are not practical or easy for the everyday user. Can't wait for it to hit the mainnet.

@sallyalbright11 thanks - that's great to hear! it was really important to us that this product wasn't just for the crypto crowd. the best technology is invisible!
George Aranzaso
Great idea, will probably use this to put a marriage contract of sorts on the blockchain.

@antare88 that's so cool george!! (and romantic, obviously) ;)
Truong Dieu Hoa
Just extended handshakes to a whole load of my friends! Cool to see the cryptographic signature hash being generated on the document after you sign.
Ning T
@truong_dieu_hoa yeah! i think that's a cool alternative to e-signature services where you have to upload a scribble.
Long Huynh
Just downloaded it! Thanks. I see I have 1 ETH O.O, can i transfer that to an external wallet?
K
Maker
@longhuynh95 the ETH you have is for handshake on the testnet, so usable in-app only! Thank you for signing up :)

Its my first day trying the app but I like the idea behind it. Would recommend it to a friend to test out together !

Pros:

Free and easy to use. Very interesting idea

Cons:

nothing

Khoa Tran
Very nice. You should build an option to share handshakes on social media/email too. Use digital peer pressure to get what you want!
K
Maker
@khoatran342 we're working on it ;) just gotta be sure that privacy is also respected for the people that want it!
Rae Joseph

Easy to read even on small iphone 5 screen

Pros:

Generates test ether for you without you having to leave the app

Cons:

Convincing my non techy colleagues to join was difficult

Likely Human

I can see myself using this among tech friends for fun. IF they add more functions like attaching outside documents, it could be a lot more than that, maybe actually useful in business.

Pros:

It's a unique concept

Cons:

Not sure who it's made for
