Hello Product Hunters!
Eran Shir here, I’m the co-founder and CEO of Nexar.
6 months ago we launched Nexar for the iPhone. Since then, we have recorded more than 9 million miles on the Nexar network. Drivers in 2,000+ different cities have driven with the app on.,
We have collected and analyzed over 500K events on the road, like red light running events (over 2000 in San Francisco alone), and assisted 117 drivers that were involved in a collision, providing them with our collision reconstruction report and all the evidence they need to prove their innocence and mitigate the trauma of a car crash.
We are launching today our Android beta version. Android is a great platform for Nexar. On Android you can use Nexar in the background so that you can keep on using your favorite navigation app and still record any dangerous incident. Additionally, you can use Nexar in ‘dual-cam mode’ so you can record inside your vehicle and out at the same time (Uber drivers love that feature).
Finally, Product Hunters get free stuff! Click through the link above and you’ll get instructions for getting a free Nexar Magnetic Car Mount (while supplies last! - UPDATE: That was fast! We ran out of mounts).
Thank you!
Eran
@eranshir I like it!! Have always thought about buying a dashcam, but the price point of the investment has really been a bummer for me. This, however, changes that + I don't have to keep upgrading the dashcam, I upgrade my phone, the dashcam gets upgraded too :) Congrats on Android launch and a good run so far.
@benln oh, so many to choose from. We had some really crazy accidents, road rage incidents, motorcycles showing off. Our Youtube channel is filled with crazy stuff. My favorite though is that guy that used Nexar on a Mississippi river boat..
The app looks nice. I've just installed it and i'm going to test it on my way home. First question that i have, is how are the records handled? I mean, after launching the app and switching to Dash mode the app started to record. From the tutorial, i understood that it will only record when you tap the screen.
Also, this is how it works? It records all the time or does the record start automatically when it detects an incident?
@cosminbaluta The app continuously records once it detected you started driving. When an incident happens, it will capture 20 seconds before the event, and 20 seconds after as an incident. That incident is immediately uploaded to your Nexar account on the cloud. The rest of the ride is stored on the phone until you get to wifi, in which case it is uploaded in a compressed manner. We use up to 50% of your free storage on the phone.
@eranshir@cosminbaluta so will all the videos be stored in the cloud somewhere or just ones where there is an incident? It'd be kind of cool to have them all stored somewhere? Also, after the video is uploaded, does it get removed from the phone? If I delete a trip log from my phone, does it remove the video from the cloud? Soooo many questions. :)
@thehashrocket@cosminbaluta incidents are uploaded immediately through your cellular connection. Rides are uploaded as a timelapse (1 frame/sec) when you get to Wifi after the ride. You can also manually choose to upload the full video of the ride. And yes, it's very cool to have your rides on the cloud :)
@thehashrocket@cosminbaluta Videos are deleted when we need the space they use for new rides, and naturally the oldest deleted first. When you delete a ride on your phone, it is also deleted from the cloud. When you archive a ride on your phone, it is removed from your phone, but remains on the cloud.
@eladmallel The most exciting change is that you can use Nexar in the background and that you can use dual-cam mode if you want to capture in-vehicle activity too.
Looks cool! Don't forget to change the name and description of this product in Product Hunt. Right now it only mentions Android, e.g. "Turn your Android into an AI Dashcam". But it's for iOS too!
@eranshir@danpeguine, congrats! This is a must for all drivers regardless of where you live. My question is how do you deal with different types of vehicles. Motorcycles and electric (or regular) bikes often zig-zag between lanes and pass on the right where drivers aren't looking.
How are you accounting for this and helping drivers with "non-cars?"
@nadavweinberg Nadav, we're building classifications for everything a driver may encounter on the road, so yes, we will be able to warn about dangerous non-car objects. It's just going to take some time.
I was just telling a friend of mine how I was wanting something to record my driving like those Russian dash cams. Then this popped up on product hunt today! Love that this an an Android app and it looks really nice, too! Thank you for making this. So excited to try it out.
