I am using Matomo for about 3 years now and analyze data for more then ten sites. Great tool and plenty of plugins to download.
Using Matomo since it was Piwik for many years, It's like Google Analytics but:
1. You get to own your data
2. It's more clear and better UX
3. It's open source and you can host it on your own server
4. Since you own your data, you can use it for data mining and custom faster data processing

Matomo is a great choice if you want both to understand you audience better and want to be compliant with GDPR.
Pros:full control over all your data Easy to set up surprisingly fast
Cons:you have to manage it by yourself

I really love Piwik now Matomo Analytics. Own your own data and best of all it's free to use.
This is just awesome. Would choose Matomo over Google Analytics any time. Do yourself a favor and use Matomo for all your self-hosted stuff.
Very useful, I have not used google analytics so I cannot compare there but this has everything I need (and more)! Updating is seamless as well which was a nice surprise :)
It is a great alternative to Google Analytics. It may not have as much settings and graphs like Google, but enough for making sound marketing.
