Hi I’m Mike, cofounder at Magicflow! We built Magicflow out of a deep frustration with those days where you don’t seem to get anything done. Why do you feel scattered and disjointed some days, but superhuman on others? This problem affects everybody who is trying to do meaningful work in the world, from the procrastinating PhD student to the founder wrestling their startup to Product Market Fit, to the small business owner trying to make their way in the world. Our mission is to make every knowledge worker do 20% more deep work, and speed up technological progress and economic growth in the process! Magicflow helps you answer all your questions about your productivity. How much deep work do you actually do? What stops you from doing deep work? Figuring this out helps you get more done in less time. We track how you spend your time on your laptop, and categorise it into different contexts, like Coding, Commucation, Marketing or Social Media. We then track the number of times you switch contexts, between for example Coding and Slack, and how long your sessions are. This helps you know how you’re doing so you can adjust your habits, like being intentional about your context switches, and doing longer work sessions to give you more time to get in flow. I’d love for you to try it out, and see if you can hit Magic flow in your first session. Everyone can try the product for free, and we’re doing a 40% discount for Product Hunt users, just use the code PRODUCTHUNTIVITY I love the Product Hunt community, a community of dreamers looking towards the future at a better world ahead. I'm so glad to be a part of it, and build the future with you all! Let's go!
Chris
@michaeljelly do users get to manually, or perhaps even retrospectively, decide which apps and time represent low-productivity for them (like not just because they've started a focus session)? Some times discussing a topic with a team in Slack can be a very productive experience, whereas someone could spend hours achieving nothing impactful in their code editor. I like the idea of tracking context switching, but that's also very difficult to automatically interpret that as good or bad. For example, often I've worked places where there's been a release or something and I've been in back and forth conversation between product and development whilst we iron out some bugs, and both parties are jumping between code, slack, a browser etc... but it's super productive (even if it's not enjoyable haha).
Michael Jelly
@codefreechris Totally agree! We will definitely add more user-driven flows to retrospectively categorise things! Same for the context-switching, at the moment it's only automatic but we've already heard from people that they'd like to define their own contexts. It's in the pipeline!
Sam Abrika
@michaeljelly Does it automatically all "distraction websites" like social media, shopping, click baity ads?
Michael Jelly
@samabrika1 Yup, tracks them all! We aren't doing blocking yet but I'm sure we'll get there eventually!

@michaeljelly Congratulations on the launch! Magicflow could be addressing the need-gap: 'Focus drift' posted on my problem validation forum - https://needgap.com/problems/93-... . If it does, You're welcomed to explain how Magicflow addresses that problem so those who need it can find it easily.

Ooooof something that turns red on my screen when I start procrastinating? I want!! Congrats on the launch, this looks awesome πŸ‘
Michael Jelly
@aliatttar Thansk Ali! Appreciate the enthusiasm! What you want, you can have :D See you in the app

I've been getting curious about the flow state lately but didn't have hard data to keep track of my deep work sessions. This platform does a great job at covering the bases and offering insight into the process. I think it's one of the most relevant products I've seen in a while. Great job.

I use Pomodoro timers but I still get distracted. Looking forward to using this like I do my apple watch to track metrics that way I improve and stop getting distracted. Is there a watch app coming?
Michael Jelly
@takomborerwam Fantastic! Excited to see you in the app! There will be a watch app within the next year, our primary focus is making the app awesome and expanding the number of platforms we're on. But watch this space! I'd love to hear how the pomodoro timers go for you, let me know!
Derek Pankaew
I'd love to use this to experiment with different productivity strategies (pomodoro, etc) and see which ones work best!
Michael Jelly
@derekpankaew Totally! We want to build experiments into the app at some point, so you can take actions and we will automatically assess their effectiveness for you. That would be so cool.

What I love about Magicflow is that it's actionable. Most productivity apps just show you if you or aren't productive. Magicflow goes one stup further and tells you what to do to become productive.
Michael Jelly
@mlejva Exactly why we built it! We want to go beyond just tracking what you already know!
James McKinven
This looks super cool! As someone who very often struggles with focus and context switching, I think Magicflow could be helpful indeed.
Michael Jelly
@jmckinven Thanks James, it's the biggest struggle of the information age in my opinion! We want to help people really zone in and get their best work done, despite having the whole internet at their fingertips!
Eric Jung
Been using it for a couple of months and Mike is super responsive to feedback! Issues get solved within a day or two. I think there's going to be a lot of people who benefit from people. Kinda like Adderall but software.
Michael Jelly
@eric_j1 hell yea, especially when you have such good ideas!
Nader Khalil
This is really exciting! As a founder, it's so easy to get distracted and take hours before getting into flow. Love being able to track this!!
Michael Jelly
@naderlikeladder Thanks Nader! Totally agree, that's exactly what led us to building Magicflow. Way too easy to go down the wrong rabbithole!
iNilay
Congratulation on the Product Hunt Launch! It is a very interesting idea to integrate Apple Health, and it is great to see something new being implemented. I hope this will improve its UX in the area of labels. The first time, screen prompts helped, but the issue is seeing it and feeling it. Good Luck
Arthur
Awesome idea and product! I assume the app collects a lot of user data, could you talk a bit on how you handle user privacy?
Michael Jelly
@artfloriani Sure thing! We have a whole page on it during our onboarding. The main thing is that by default, all titles and URLs are kept locally and never leave your device, because we do all our categorisation on the device. This is a huge huge win for privacy. Only the high-level categories of things your doing go to our server, so we can give you insights into how they shape your day. Beyond that we store the data double-encrypted in the cloud, once by the database, once by us. Because we're a subscription company, we already have revenue so we will never need to, and promise never to, monetise your data. Hope that helps!
Amy Liu
Love Magicflow! Been using it the past couple months and it helps me sooo much!! Keep it up team!!! πŸ’ͺ
Michael Jelly
@amy_liu3 Thanks Amy! Makes me so happy to see another happy user!
Sacha
This is so cool! I've always wanted a comprehensive personal analytics tool to help understand my working habits better, this seems perfect for that. What upcoming feature are you most excited about?
Michael Jelly
@sachaker Definitely the new insights we're developing, and richer social features. We're going to be doing predictive modelling so we can show you what tomorrow might look like given what you do today. We also want to launch some more groups features and generally improve that side of the app!
Matthew Johnson
Congrats on the launch! What's next on the roadmap?
Michael Jelly
@mattcrail Thanks! Next we have Windows and Android, better insights and integration of sleep and fitness data, more social features, integration of weather and location data, the list goes on! Experiments? We're going to be the best platform to track and improve your productivity and life!
Payam
Hey πŸ‘‹πŸ», Very cool app, I'm currently downloading it, and I hope that it helps me get rid of bad habits and keep me productive. Congrats on the Magicflow launch.
Michael Jelly
@payam_saremi Thanks Payam, let me know how it goes! Feel free to DM me at @michaeljellly or @magicflowHQ on Twitter
Kathryn Leslie
I am definitely the type of person that sometimes struggles losing focus when switching between tasks. Looking forward to giving Magicflow a try and to track what's really distracting me.
Oscar Rojas Guerrero
I've been using it and it's great. With so many distractions this makes me accountable for how I'm spending my time!
Michael Jelly
@oscar_rojas_guerrero Thanks Oscar! Exactly what we're aim for! Focus and accountability
Mario Vasilescu
Love this. Needed more than ever, i'm context switching all day and don't have enough visibility over it. Also, big fan of the Magicflow team, have been super impressed with their early work. Excited to see this rocket ship take off!
Michael Jelly
@1upm Thanks Mario! Excited to have you onboard in the app. Taking this ship to the moooon!
James Lloyd
Can't wait to start using this!!! Also love the integration with sleep data - definitely feel that is a hidden blocker to my productivity ("countered" by lots of caffeine top-ups).
Michael Jelly
@james_lloyd3 Totally agree - it's all about getting the full picture and that's what we're trying to do here! Ironically I'm here at 4am drinking redbull! hahaha
Luca M. Berger
Love the idea of this product with its ability to track the time we spend on distracting platforms and directly give me feedback on how I behave/perform. With what operating systems/browsers is your app/website compatible?
Michael Jelly
@luca_m_berger Thanks very much! It's compatible with MacOS, but we're going to be launching Windows very very soon - we already have it working we're just testing and working through the kinks!
