As a dad of two daughters, and software developer who gets a great deal of enjoyment & satisfaction out of my career, I'm thrilled to see any projects that will help improve the diversity in STEM - it horrifies me that my girls might not have the same encouragement and opportunities as their male counterparts in these technical subjects/roles, and I'll certainly be working hard to counteract that wherever possible.
Inside Out is a wonderful movie, and I will definitely look at this one with my eldest.
I did love Inside Out - so it's exciting to see that Google and Pixar have teamed up on such a worthy cause!
The story in numbers:
- In the United States, 74% of girls express interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in middle school
- By high school, only 0.3% girls plan to major in Computer Science
- CS jobs will be the highest-paying sectors over the next decade, paying almost $15K more than average
- Encouragement from adults and peers is the #1 contributor to a girl’s decision to pursue Computer Science
