Gemini Photos — Clean up your Camera Roll

Featured

Ever wondered where your iPhone storage goes? Most of it is probably useless photos, like those 20 pics you took to get one perfect shot. With Gemini Photos, you can keep just the good ones and remove similar shots, blurred pics, and other clutter in few taps

If I'm not mistaken Google Photos have similar functionality or not? I have 10 similar photos of my dog and Google Photos take the best photo and delete other.
Alexander Yemelianov
@nikolay_siabrenko are you sure that Google Photos can do it? They propose you only to delete cluttered photos and nothing more.
Ahmed Sulaiman
Wow! Congratulations on the launch! 🤟 What an amazing and smart approach to such frequent problem with Camera Roll.
Dmytro Bilkun
@geek_1001 Thanks:) Yeah, hoping to save quite a lot of people's time here 😎
Alexander Yemelianov
@geek_1001 Thank you!

Sometimes I will have the same photo saved in multiple social media folders. Will it delete those photos as well? dope 🚬
Alice Kotlyarenko
@dredurr Yes, the app will find and group all these photos, so you can review them and decide which copy (or copies) you want to keep.
Fraser Smith

This is great for de-cluttering and removing screenshots and blurred photos etc. But I found that for 'similar' photos, it chose the best one for deletion too often. As it found over 2000 similar photos, I would have lost a lot of time checking every one of its choices.

In the end, I cancelled my trial and deleted it.

YMMV

Pros:

Simple, easy to use. Potentially a great spacesaver.

Cons:

I can't trust it so very time consuming

Alexander Yemelianov
We have a magic button which can delete all your similar shots with 1 tap. Did you find it in Similar section?

one of the most helpful features for girls, I think :) You shouldn't choose one of the best photos by yourself anymore, Gemini Photos will do it instead of you! Love it!
Dmytro Bilkun
@valiahavruliyk Thank you 😎 Really hope it will work out great for you.
Dmytro Bilkun
@valiahavruliyk @lisadziuba Looking good 😎 With Gemini Photos It's all about having 'space' on your iPhone after all [bad alien joke, sorry]

Looks great. How does this handle privacy concerns? is everything done on the device itself? are you accessing/processing/storing anything related to our photos on your own servers?
Dmytro Bilkun
@chrisdolle Hey, thanks. Great question. All the processing is done 100% in the app. No data is being transferred to any servers. The scanning works offline, which also makes it convenient to use, for instance aboard a plane after a trip somewhere when the airplane mode is turned on and you're bored. 😜 Cheers

This is great! Worth the money :D Beautiful utility app. One thing: I had 510 photos selected and I pressed "Delete" by accident. Happily there was another dialog to access photos from iCloud and I revoked the access. Maybe an additional prompt ("Are you REALLY sure?") when you have more than 100, 200, 300 photos to delete? Nice work!
Alice Kotlyarenko
@greghadala Thank you for the suggestion! There's always an additional system confirmation when you're deleting photos, so don't worry :) Plus, they go to Recently Deleted, so even if you tap the confirmation by accident, you'll easily recover the photos.

It's a good idea, but I tried and will not continue to use it. A few reasons: 1. Suggestions are not correct, which means I still need to go through every suggestion to make sure I didn't delete the photo I want to keep. For example, I have a few portrait photos, but the suggested best one is the one that my eyes are closed... 2. Feels dumb, I have similar photos because I applied filters through other apps like Instagram or VSCO, I want to keep them not others. 3. Some interactions are very complicated, there are photos I know I can let the app do whatever, I just need one, the app can delete the rest. There are no quicker ways for me to select them from the 1732 similar photos I just unlocked and delete them. It's probably faster if I just do it from the camera roll. Hope this will help. Looking forward to the next version.
Dmytro Bilkun
@huangdun Thanks for the feedback, it’s very helpful! The “best result” functionality is definitely tricky, and we’re constantly working on improving the app’s suggestions. User preferences like which copies they’d rather keep are worth looking into as well.

this is amazing — i love gemini and this evolution of the product makes total sense, as i mainly use it for photos
Dmytro Bilkun
@juanbuis Thank you! We did listen to our users before coming up with this product. We've had countless interviews with our Gemini 2 customers where we've found out that iPhone photos are one of the key sources for duplicate files on people's Macs 🤓. And here we are 😀.
Alexander Yemelianov
Hi, Product Hunters! Many thanks to @charlieirish for hunting Gemini Photos and to all of you for upvoting it. You may know one of our top apps is Gemini 2, a duplicate finder for Mac. It’s the users of that app who came up with the idea for this one. When talking to them, we discovered they mainly used Gemini 2 to sort out photos, and the improvement they wanted was the ability to do the same on iPhone. So we built Gemini Photos, an iPhone app for — you guessed it, photos that look alike. This is what Gemini Photos does: suggests you the best photo out of several similar shots lets you quickly delete the rest detects and helps remove blurred photos, screenshots, and photos of text lets you delete all iPhone photos if you want to P.S. We know it can be scary to let an app mess with your photos, because you might lose memorable shots, but don’t worry: Gemini Photos only suggests you what to delete, the final choice is always yours. Enjoy!

@charlieirish @ymlnv Awesome! I'm a big fan of Gemini 2 and also use it to sort pictures. Well done turning it into a product, super useful!
Martin Pannier
@charlieirish @ymlnv First thoughts after scanning 70k photos: - "Similar" is really unreliable. It said a photo of a friend and me, and a photo of the same friend and my girlfriend, on a scenic backdrop, were "similar" and one of the 2 should be deleted. - Since I can't trust the "Similar" section, would be great if the app could separate out true duplicates - same photo but maybe with different metadata - from "similar" photos. Cleaning up the 1st mess would also allow to clean the 2nd more easily. A sort by "how much I trust this app" if you will. Cheers

@charlieirish @ymlnv I have long been searching for a duplicate finder that is smart about albums. For example: I have two photos that are identical, A and B. Photo A is in three different albums, photo B is in one album. Can you delete photo A and then put photo B in all the albums where A appeared?
Ariel
This is awesome. Exactly what I needed. Maybe finally I will go back to my photos in Camera Roll. I hate this mess.
Dmytro Bilkun
@ariel_jedrzejczak Cool. Thanks. Do let us know how it goes 😉
Dana Parsons

I love everything by the MacPaw team. Have used their products for years.

Pros:

Get more space, stat.

Cons:

No Cons, maybe accidental deletion of shite photos

Dmytro Bilkun
Before developing the app we did some market research, and over 50% of iPhone users said they had redundant photos. We decided to focus on major types of those: blurred photos, stuff like screenshots and photos of text (which you typically take to share with someone and then forget to delete), and of course, our specialty inherited from Gemini 2 — similar photos. The trickiest part was “teaching” the app to tell good shots from not-so-good ones. Gemini Photos uses computer vision to detect what’s in the image — specifically faces and smiles, which are important criteria. To identify photos of text and such, the app uses Apple’s Core ML.
Chad Reiser
The very first screen is “subscribe now for $1.99 / month.” So I swiftly deleted it. Give me a taste of what it can do before forcing me into a reoccurring subscription. PersInally, I would have used thIs app only once and then deleted It. I cant justIfy a monthly subscriptIon for my personal use.
Dmytro Bilkun
@chad_reiser Hi! Thanks for feedback. Our idea was to offer you a free trial from the start so you could experience the app with full access. Our intention was not to force you to subscribe but rather suggest. We will work on improving this flow and make it more clear and frictionless. Thanks again.
Louis de Vaumas
@chad_reiser @dmytro_bilkun Same here. I just wasn't ready for a subscription. I would happily pay 5€ for an app like this, but not a monthly subscription.
Kseniia Rastvorova

It's an easy way to delete TONS of duplicates... I often experience problems when I have to choose one photo of a sunset, of my dog or of me! And Gemini Photos is a great solution, thank you guys!

Pros:

Helps to clean up my photo library!

Cons:

takes a while to scan my 24 000 photos library

Pavlo Grozian
This app worth every penny. Using it since first RC in TestFlight. Saved me tons of space at iPhone and other devices because it removes blurry dupes that don't go to the cloud. Love it!
Dmytro Bilkun
@pavlo_grozian Thanks for the feedback! 😌We're really glad you like it.
lior redlus

I like the concept and the easily usable interface to clear all the clutter from my photos library. However, even though the app is nice and inviting, I could not delete a single photo without actually purchasing a monthly subscription. I expect a service which is usable multiple times to have some kind of free usage policy.

Pros:

Simple and sleek user interface

Cons:

No free actions at all (!) a payed-only app should have that marked in bold.

No tl;dr on what Gemini actually does with your photos or data.

Stas Shyshkin

I've used it for one month and it helped me delete a lot of clutter. The only issue I've noticed is that it sometimes chooses to delete a better photo. I believe it will get better soon though. Great app overall! Keep it up:)

Pros:

Simple, good interface

Cons:

sometimes chooses not the best photo

Bill Xiong
Pros: Clean, functional, exactly like MacPaw. Cons: Probably better to spend the 15$ a year subscription price on, say, more cloud storage and keep your duplicate photos :)
Dmytro Bilkun
@bill_xiong Thanks for your feedback. The point on cloud storage seems quite valid. Nonetheless, we believe in the long term a cloud storage as a solution may only make things worse, creating even more mess in photos, thus not letting you enjoy the memories or at least be able to quickly find the photo you are looking for. Thanks again for your thoughts though🙏.
Lisa Dziuba
That's super useful! Pity, that you don't have it for Android ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Dmytro Bilkun
@lisadziuba Not yet. But who knows where this is going to take us 😉
