Good to see that you're donating 1% to Charity Water. What's the backstory on this product, @nadia_yun?

@rrhoover Hi Ryan and Product Hunters! I am Justin, Co-Founder of QUARTZ and I am really excited to introduce you to the QUARTZ Bottle - the world’s first self-cleaning water bottle with instant water purification. The idea is pretty simple: pure water from a clean bottle anywhere and anytime - and we will all live healthier and use less plastic. Reusable water bottles today offer an environmentally friendly solution to plastic, but they are easily contaminated, difficult to clean, carry an unpleasant odor, and they do not provide access to purified water on-the-go. This is why we still dump over 1 million plastic bottles into landfill as a civilization EVERY MINUTE. The QUARTZ Bottle addresses current pain points by design. It uses patented UV-C LED technology to neutralize harmful and odor causing germs from your water and bottle. With just a touch of a button and in only 60 seconds, enjoy purified water from a clean bottle, anytime and anywhere. The bottle also turns on automatically every 4 hours to keep your water fresh and bottle clean. We are live on Kickstarter at https://www.kickstarter.com/proj.... We’d love to get your feedback and support! I’d be happy to answer any questions. Thanks!

@justinw_tweet I like it!! I found out about it from the Mashable video that was made. The video was a little long. I didn't watch the whole thing. I didn't even realize the charity part of the business until coming here to PH. I like that a lot 👍🏽

This is amazing. Does this use similar technology to the light that you can buy for water purification, but it's integrated into the cap?
Nadia Yun
Hunter
@lonnylot Thank you for the question, Lonny. The QUARTZ Bottle uses UV-C water purification device that does NOT use mercury bulbs. The patented UV-C LED technology runs off a battery that only needs to be charged every 2-3 months via micro-USB. Correct, the light is integrated into the cap.

I have ten years' experience selling travel water bottles and I know what's good.

Pros:

Until you understand the technology, you won't 'get' just how good this is. The old style portabottle is about as hygienic as the Portaloo.

Cons:

None I can think of...

I'm surprised that no one has pointed out that this bottle can't possibly do what it claims to do. What its makers claim is that you can put water contaminated with microbes in and get pure water out, by shining UV light on the microbes. But we all know that things, including microbes, don't just disappear, with or without UV light. If there are microbes or other contaminants in the bottle, you'll be drinking them. The most you can hope for with a sufficient dose of UV light is to prevent some microbes from reproducing (it doesn't even kill them). But bacteria don't reproduce in clean water anyway, and the UV has no effect on suspended solids and chemicals in your water. If you want to drink clean water, you have to filter it *before* putting it in your bottle. In my eyes, this product and its marketing are just a cynical (and successful) attempt to exploit the fears and ignorance of consumers for the gain of the Larq founders. A simple glass or stainless water bottle filled with clean water and washed when needed would be more "sustainable," healthier and much cheaper.

I purchased the top of the line bottle. I informed Larq. They asked me some questions and for picture evidence of the broken technology. I did everything and then Larq has not responded for more than month. They suck. Waste of money.

Pros:

The idea of Larq is great, but the actual technology broke within the first week of using.

Cons:

Some of the worst costumer service I've ever experienced.

My wife has sent them multiple emails. There was an initial issue of a dent in one of the bottles we ordered. I placed an order for 3 in a set back in Christmas 2018. The issue was reported as soon as we opened the box and it took almost a month for it to be sent over. They sent the wrong color initially and the customer service was overall poor. Now the button stopped working for two of the bottles and have yet to receive a response on the warranty claim. My wife has reported to BBB today. We are tired of this run around.

I think I'm on my third Larq bottle at this point? Maybe fourth? Every single one I've had has red-ringed (instead of working and cleaning your water, it displays a red ring and is nonfunctional forever). Larq has been very good about replacing bottles, but enough is enough. This is brutal. I'm done.

Pros:

Cool tech, smooth finish to the bottle

Cons:

Breaks OFTEN, a bit heavy

I supported these bottles's project since 2017, after many delays we received our bottles in summer of 2018. In the beginning they failed in less than a month but we were able to get replacements quite easily. In December we got our 2nd replacement bottles and since then they have worked quite well. There is a slight change in the taste of the water after the UVC led is on. The water tastes slightly better. We use now the bottle in a frequent basis, from 6 to 10 times per day. If you sum all those bottles, the investment in the bottles pays it off very quickly.

Pros:

Good customer support 18 months of warranty and bottle replacement It keeps the cold temperature of the beverage for a long time.

Cons:

At first, the bottles were defective. On Dec 2018 I received 2 bottles replacing the ones that failed. Since then, they work very well.

Really Bad Customer service, buggy device, If you take off the sticker in the bottom of the bottle while washing it then they will not replace it for you knowing that it is a bug in the Bottles software

The bottle is great, sleek and nice design, vacuum flask works well, but not durable. Very expensive but not worth the price. My LARQ bottle cap broke shortly after the warranty expired (1 year), so they can't help me and asked me to buy a new bottle cap ($70 USD) but they gave a discount. Pros: Good vacuum flask Nice design Customer service replies very fast Cons: Not durable Expensive If it breaks after the warranty is over, you're sh*t outta luck.
