Hello ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ, Bonjour ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท and Hola ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Product Hunt community! We're super excited to launch a massive new update for LangAI - The easiest and most natural way to become fluent in a new language. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป We're a small team of makers that all speak different native languages - German, English, French, Spanish. So we understand how important it is to learn languages. I myself speak 3 languages and am learning the 4th one. ๐Ÿค” Something we noticed is that current language learning apps don't actually make you confident in speaking a new language - they mostly teach you vocabulary and grammar, help you understand what is being said but you never get to actually practice speaking freely. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I have an 800+ streak on Duolingo and yet I don't find the confidence to just speak freely in the language that I'm learning. Something here must be broken. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ So we decided to build our own solution to this problem: Becoming fluent and confident speaking a new language. We first launched last year and received a lot of useful feedback from the community. So here's what we built since then: โญ๏ธ Massive overhaul of the entire app including the UI, the core functionality of the app & availability for both iOS and Android. You won't recognize it! โ˜•๏ธ Real-life scenarios: We built 10+ scenarios so you can practice everyday situations like ordering a coffee, buying a train ticket or even going to the doctor! ๐Ÿ‘ถ Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced modes: You can set the skill level and the conversation will be adjusted so that you have the exact right level of difficulty: Not too easy to be boring and not too difficult to be overwhelming. ๐ŸŒ Support for 90+ mother tongues: Even if you're not super comfortable speaking english, you'll be able to use our app! The corrections and menu settings are translated into almost every major language spoken around the world We are really excited to share this with you and would love to get as much Feedback as possible. The app has a premium version but is free to use for everyone so please give it a try and let us know what you think ๐Ÿ™

@fabian_m LangAI is the perfect next step after you've learned your basics on an app like Duolingo and Babel to *actually* become conversational or fluent! Excited to finally be able to talk with your mom in fluent German ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช ๐Ÿซก

@clara_eloy She can't wait!

@fabian_m me and my team have recently deconstructed big part of Duolingo Engagement Strategy (how they use prompts and reinforcing rewards to drive habitual use). I can spare 1h for a call to share insights with your team if you like. I am a behavior designer by trade. I lead a BX/UX/UI design studio focused on applying behavioral psychology to effectively drive high frequency engagement, retention and viral growth. Thus the interests in deconstructing best players on the market ;)

Cool! I studied French in school for many years but never got to practice in a real setting. I havenโ€™t gotten much out of Duolingo and always said what I need is to practice taking to real life French children (lol) because thatโ€™s my level. Excited to try it!
Fabian Martin
@sarah_wright7 We don't have children working for us (lol) but our AI will definitely allow you to practice in simple French!

@fabian_m Feedback I just tried today : 1. I wanted to learn german and selected on first screen. After that i was clue less what to do? 2. The instructions was in german which i want to learn i dont understand anything of that. 3. If i switch the language to english it start teaching me english. So you have support teaching language: English and Learning Language: German Like say hello in german as "Hallo" Then the user can understand what is Hallo. Just my feedback. Thanks
Christopher Erickson
Do you have Euro Portuguese or just Brazilian?
Fabian Martin
@chriserickson Hey Christopher! We currently support Brazilian Portuguese but we are looking to add further languages in the future, especially if there are a lot of requests from users.

Anything @clara_eloy touches is gold so I know this is a great product! Congrats!!
Clara-Marie Eloy
@tinaciousz You're too sweet!! I merely helped with some marketing tips here haha, but thank you so much for the support ๐Ÿซถ
Fabian Martin
@clara_eloy @tinaciousz I couldn't agree more!
Shushant Lakhyani
I hope more language learners get to know about it. Congratulations on the launch!
Fabian Martin
@shushant_lakhyani Thank you Shushant, we poured our hearts and souls into this! Are you already learning a language or just interested in the idea in general?
Pam Garza
bonjour! ooo la la... thats all I know ๐Ÿ˜. But I DREAM of speaking french... maybe now with this app ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ™Œ I do wonder... what is your most used language being practiced on the app? Also, LOVE the "real life scenarios" would be very cool to have a section to request scenarios and maybe even have other members reply. Congrats on your launch!
Fabian Martin
@pamsny Thank you Pam! It's pretty even between Spanish and English being #1. English being so popular was one of the main reasons we decided to support other mother tongues and translated the app into 90+ languages. Most of my family speaks German natively and are trying to learn English and they weren't really able to use the app before this update. French is actually what I'm also learning right now so I can guarantee it works well haha. Love the idea of being able to request scenarios and having other members reply! Thanks for the suggestion.
Sadath N
Wow, this looks like a Exciting! I love the concept
Fabian Martin
@sadath_n Thank you Sadath! I see you're launching soon too. What is it that you are working on?
Vรญtor Soares
This sounds like a really useful and inclusive tool! Great job on making realistic scenarios! Congratulations on the launch ๐Ÿš€
Fabian Martin
@vitor_pvsoares Thank you Vรญtor! We've put a lot of effort into making the scenarios as realistic as possible. I'm currently in Porto, Portugal and it helped me order at Starbucks in Portuguese
Yan Fernandes
๐Ÿ’ก Bright idea
Great job, Fabian. I really like the user experience; it's very fluid and super intuitive. Just a suggestion (I could be wrong): on the first page, the app asks for my language, but I thought it was asking for my native language, when it was actually asking for the language I was studying. I think you should ask for both languages, the native and the one being studied.
Fabian Martin
@yanffernandes Thanks for the feedback Yan! Yeah we're only letting users select the language they want to study right now, the other one is determined by the language set in your phone's settings. That was supposed to avoid the problem that you were just facing, where people are confused about which language we mean. I will adjust the wording to make it clearer.
Patryk Pijanowski
Hmmm, does your product match Tutlo? And do you have plans to introduce native speaker interviews as well?
Federico Ruiz
Let's go, congrats on the launch Fabian!
Fabian Martin
@federico_puppeteer thanks Federico!
Shuang Guan
Very neat idea! I like how the corrections show up in the chat and the overall design of the app! Curious how you guys handle sentence fragments? That's something that we've had to think a lot about over at Engram.
Aman Wen
The new real-life scenario feature is a game-changer for language learners! What a fabulous way to get comfortable with everyday situations. At Checky Bear, we also believe in the power of tailor-made experiences, especially when it comes to website monitoring. We're curious, how did you manage to calibrate the language difficulty levels so accurately?
Fabian Martin
@aman_wen Thanks Aman! The AI corrections are really the core of our product and we spent a lot of time training it to work well on each proficiency level. What works best is a mix of the following: 1. Starting the conversation off the right way - we have different icebreakers (that's what we call the initial message) sent by the AI for each difficulty level and it starts the conversation off in the right difficulty, which makes it easier for the AI to continue that way. 2. We train the AI on tons of examples for each difficulty level so it intuitively learns to converse in the right proficiency level 3. Each message sent in the conversation is a part of the memory of the AI and helps craft its next response. Thanks to that, if you write in very simple Spanish, it will be more likely to respond in very simple Spanish.
Aris Nakos
@aman_wen @fabian_m Fabian, did your team make a ML algorithm for this product or are you leveraging prompt engineering on LLM layers for AI corrections?
Fabian Martin
@aman_wen @aris_nakos Hey Aris! That's a great question. I did my thesis at university in Machine Learning and the main thing I took away from it is this: in order to build a good AI you need tons of data - so much data you couldn't even imagine. That's why things like ChatGPT and Claude are as good as they are. And that's also why it's going to be basically impossible to build a better AI system from scratch. Long story short, we decided to build on existing LLMs to give the users the best possible experience. We did a lot of work to turn the basic AI into a very specific language-learning AI through prompt-engineering, as well as our own intelligent algorithms built on top of the existing LLM.
Simon Tunaitis
Hey Fabian, congrats on the launch! I've been on a 424-day streak on Duolingo, but I feel like learning there has become quite repetitive and boring. This looks interesting, I'll definitely try it out later
Fabian Martin
@simontunaitis Thanks Simon! I'm at 800+ now and I feel the same, it's mostly going through the motions now to keep the streak going. I definitely learned a lot from Duolingo and I don't wanna talk bad about it but I think once you have the basics down it's best to just get talking.
Sergei Vorniches
Love the implementation. I tried Portuguese, which I'm currently learning with Duolingo - tottaly different experience, in a good way. Too many questions before initial set up in my opinion, but feels great anyway. Good luck!
Fabian Martin
@vorniches Thanks for the feedback Sergei! Making the onboarding simpler is definitely something I've been considering. Are you seeing any problems with learning Portuguese on Duolingo that you would like to see addressed?
Sergei Vorniches
@fabian_m Since I am learning Portuguese in quite lazy mode, Duolingo doing just fine. But say I will work on it more, and what I will need then is exactly what LangAI provides โ€“ live chat with instant language theory references.
Marรญa Cassarino
It's like having a friend, a work colleague, a film expert, a sports partner, the conversation partner you want depending on the topic you propose. At the beginning of the conversation, his questions are a little repetitive, but it as you goes deeper into a topic, the conversation flows naturally. The corrections are proposed in an agile and synthetic way. I love it!
Fabian Martin
@maria_cassarino Thank you so much Marรญa! I'm glad you're enjoying it
Inรฉs Cassarino
Excelente app, la mejor que eh probado para ir aprendiend idiomas. Me encanta !!
Fabian Martin
@ines_cassarino Muchas gracias!!
Nicolas Rama
I've been studying Italian and Portuguese and I've never seen a tool as useful as LangAI. Both for reading and listening comprehension, it's amazing. It actually feels like you're learning with a personal tutor by your side. This is the perfect example of a useful tool that adds value, is affordable and helps you to learn faster and better. Keep it up!
Fabian Martin
@nicolas_rama Thank you so much for the kind words Nicolas! We love to hear that
Annalisa Pixelson
I just had a conversation with your app. I love it. I only got stuck when I got a review and had to reply at the same time.
Fabian Martin
@pixelson Thank you Annalisa! Glad to hear you enjoy it. How exactly did you get stuck?
