I didn't expect to see Kodak launch a smartphone but it looks like they're simplly licensing the brand, according to @ingridlunden.

That looks a bit too chubby to fit in my pocket like a smart phone

@kristofertm look this animation, there can see it better:

There's nothing 'professional-quality' here as far as I can see. By all accounts, Panasonic/Lumix did a far more credible job two years ago with the CM1. https://www.cnet.com/news/panaso...

The brown leather holder is stunning!

I don't see a flash on it?

But, what does the phone do other than pictures?

Does anybody know which OS runs on the Ektra? The thee soft-buttons would suggest it's Android.

This is a joke, right? Feels like Kodak is trying to squeeze out any dollar they can. Next thing you know, they will put a camera on a car and call it "Kodak Kar".

As an entrepreneur, I've got to wonder, why don't they leverage the brand that they've licensed and actually do it properly. Instead of simply a branded hackjob, why not make a top of the line photography oriented camera on top of Android. Look at the Nokia Lumia 1020, it had awful Microsoft o/s on it and people still bought it for the camera. A modern, Android equivalent phone, with a nice textured aluminum and leather body (I'm thinking Nikon FM style) would sell, VERY well...

The actual camera size and consequently the sensor is so small compared to the cover glass. Seems a gimmick.

very brave design but I'm not sure there will be a demand for this smartphone

Very curious product.. a camera with phone integrated, not a phone with camera.. as is usual. And inside it have an Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) More info here: http://www.kodakphones.com/ektra And in the press release: http://www.kodak.com/US/en/Consu...

This is a camera that happens to have the software that smartphones use. As a result, this phone might be the beginnings of where the standalone point and shoot category will go -- always connected and (potentially) consistently improved. Perhaps this sits in between smartphones and mirrorless/DSLR cameras, and only a brand like Kodak would dare try it. The camera specs themselves aren't that impressive as compared to the latest class of smartphones, so the brand would be the only thing that would carry weight behind this bold move.

Would love to test this! The camera-related specs are pretty good, but I wonder how much does it cost? *21MP main camera with Kodak non-reflective lens coating. Aperture f2.0. *Optical Image Stabilization and Auto Focus. *13MP front-facing camera. *Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) & HDR Imaging. *4K Video Capture.

@alexabian It's the IMX 230 Exmor sensor, this is used in numerous middle-class phones like the Honor 7. The only impressive part is an added OIS, everything else is just an impostor as it definitely does not come with superior cam abilities as the looks may suggest. It's also full plastic.
Andreas Mitschke
@alexabian I was pretty enticed by it, too. Too bad, the innards are less impressive as the looks. It still is a very neat looking device.

According to c|net it will be £449, on sale across Europe with "no plans to launch the phone in the wider world…"

Important thing to note here: this is not a Kodak phone. Kodak, the brand is dead, and now it's a shell company that licenses out its brand to other random companies. It's not what you thin.
Erik Dungan
@ow I think you mean Kodak, the company that made film and cameras, is dead. The brand is the only thing that's left.
