Hey.Café was designed from the start to be fast, have no ads, we respect your privacy, and don't include any trackers. We want to be a safe online community for people to share and make new friends.
Thanks for checking out Hey.Café. It was started just over a year ago and since that time it looks nothing like it did. We expanded, grew, and added the main features people have been requesting like messaging.
I started this to be a safe place for people to hang out, not only did I want everything to be usable for free but I wanted never to have ads, or trackers of any kind. You still get a great experience with all the features including fully rendered Tweets, YouTube videos, Apple Music shares and more.
I hope you all enjoy using the site and I am open for any questions any time.
@intrepidleeloo Only data is the stuff people post, we only have simple analytics by plausible and all that really does is show traffic but not user specific stuff. We just don't collect data like other places do. If you cant see it on your profile or settings we don't have it.
@intrepidleeloo As private as they can be, staff cant view them that's why we made sure that until you accept a chat with someone all content is not shown to them. They are encrypted with a key not stored on the same server but thats as far as we can go. Funny enough the web is not designed for end to end or we would, it's the same reason FB messenger has been trying for years to add end to end encryption but has not and why things like iMessage are not on the web.
To do encryption like that you need to generate public and private keys, but the problem is where do you store them as users can login on different devices. They need to be stored server side somewhere and that makes them about as good as an encrypted key.
When someone says safe online space I think no harassment, bullying, extremist views, harmful content and so on. In saying that what does Hey.Cafe do better than traditional social networks to protect its users against such things? Doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere how Hey.Cafe makes for a safer network.
@florin_biro We have clear rules that we will not be slow to act on, and we don't have a your banned for a week system. You break the rules it's complete account ban. Reporting something is only 2 click for the user and reports are live on the backend with preview content so it can be acted on really quickly. We will be doing some automated stuff to auto flag content up to check. https://heycafedocs.com/rules
Hey Anthony! Love the ethos around the product. I have signed up for it. Thank you for keeping it free.
So basically you can share anything from other social sites and have a discussion around it minus the ads and tracking? Pretty cool :)
Any other interesting features on the roadmap?
@vishal_godhwani We do have a roadmap but the developer features are already there and we do have a few upcoming things like a self hosted blogging system that uses your Hey.Café account or groups as the source content for it. You can actually see it in use on our blog https://heycafeblog.com and can see our roadmap and more at the docs site https://heycafedocs.com
Nice! Got one question, how does this monetize? Looks like it refueses the ususal channels other social media uses (tracking, ads, ...) which I like, but to me the doubt about its viability remains.
Thanks!
@luis_carlos_moyano_medina Fully funded by users who get Pro to have access to longer posts and more reactions and a few other things. It already is paid for so not going anywhere.
