Against the Grain — Documentary series about companies w/ customer-driven values
3
At Help Scout we’ve always been inspired by businesses that put their customers and community at the center of everything they do. We'd love to see more of these companies in the world, so we decided to find them and tell their stories in a special 3-part documentary series called Against the Grain.

Hey Product Hunt 👋 I’m so excited to share a new project we’ve been working on at Help Scout. More than a year ago, I pitched @jayacunzo on an ambitious vision for a documentary series. I wanted to tell stories of special businesses putting their customers, craft, and community first. The ones not interested in the hypergrowth, grow-at-all-costs mindset that dominates the startup narrative today. After a lot of hard work, I'm so excited to finally share Against the Grain with all of you. Over the next few months, we’ll be launching new episodes of the series, starting with the first featuring our friends at Death Wish Coffee. As a bonus, if you subscribe to receive notifications of future episode releases, you’ll be automatically entered into our giveaway of a free year’s supply of Death Wish Coffee! I hope you love the stories we’ll be sharing and let us know what you think. Nick

The real work starts now: challenging the assumption that capitalism can't be used for the greater good. Businesses are extremely high-leverage entities that can promote positive change, but they can also feel a gravitational pull towards selfish aims. It feels like the start of a shift towards the former, not the latter, but we need (A) a redefined picture of what success in business looks like, (B) more examples and stories to support that new definition, and (B) a community that helps evangelize and educate. Movements are about momentum. Others who sense the momentum join, and the movement compounds. We're fighting generations of damaging late-stage capitalism and monopolistic aims. Society applauds growth at all costs. We worship the founder-king (and I say "king" while shaking my head). It's broken. I hope this show can be a beacon to people, but it by no means solves the problem. We just want to build some momentum. Please help out any way you can, suggesting stories, asking questions (even offering criticisms), and generally pushing the boulder your own way so we can get this thing rolling and speed it up. This series is our little way of helping push things forward.
