Sell subscriptions on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis with Gumroad Memberships. Use tiers, workflows, and posts to deliver newsletters, rewards, and content.
Hi PH,
Creators have made over $350,000,000 selling with Gumroad. The vast majority of these sales have been one-time purchases. Single-product sales are a great model for lots of creators, but many others want to offer their audience the option to pay monthly or yearly for their work. Today, we're thrilled to announce Memberships, to give creators the tools they need to create paid communities, courses, software, newsletters, and more.

Various members of the Gumroad team will be around all day to answer questions about Memberships, Gumroad, and the creator economy in general!
I use the Gumroad membership from the release day (a few months). I'm very happy with the functionality and the recurring payments they offer. I use it on Absurd Design.
The bad is that up to this date they never featured us on their marketplace :( and the second bad is that the PayPal payment is discontinued and the creators should receive every client's transaction to their personal PayPal (it's not very comfortable from the accountant's viewpoint).
Anyway, it's a very good service and I recommend it!
@andrianv First off, congratulations on getting product of the WEEK with Absurd Design. If you need help with the PayPal migration or getting your products on Discover, check out our help docs (help.gumroad.com) or send an email with your questions to support@gumroad.com
This is great, what else needed to be added is a 'Portal Feature' that Substack, Patreon and BMC offers, where a customer can see the list of (subscriber-only) posts
I like how gumroad offers so much things so you have a freedom to use it however you want. for example with memberships, now you can have paid newsletters for examples. Many other things may not be obvious at the first sight, I wrote that in my info product (won't spam it here), but once when you get familiar with the features, you get more and more opportunities.
I'm glad you took Membership now to the new level, will check it out for some of my use cases, congrats on the PH launch
Love this because creators really need a stable source of recurring income and pricing tiers will unlock different willingness to pay.
Out of curiosity, what are the top creator categories on Gumroad?
@shl and @philip_kiely awesome product! Do you have ways for users to search and find new content or is the creator responsible for promoting their own URL?
@shl@philip_kiely@bryce_mckernan Gumroad is built to enable creators to sell directly to their audience, so most of our user experience for creators is based around the idea that the creator is directly promoting their own work. We do have Discover features, which allow customers to search and discover content, but they are less than 5% of volume. We want as much as possible to be in the creator's control while we handle complexity on the back end. Every successful creator on Gumroad that I can think of found success by promoting their own work.
The most important thing as a differentiator is how Gumroad handle taxes.
There isn't a ticking timebomb of unpaid taxes for VAT
I am still trying to work out how to do all the pricing options I want whilst still allowing users to modify their plans, and of course, some might look for upsells features, but there are ways to do it.
I would love to take payments in multiple currencies and have some integrations without a Zapier tax.
But the simplicity conquers all for 90% of potential users.
I don't get it. You have always been able to configure recurring as I remember. For example, I set up a "product" a long ago "Recurring Open Source donation" https://gum.co/tunnckoCoreRecurr... ...
But yea, I get it, it's a little better I guess. Why would you need creating 1 "membership" with tiers instead of just products on the main (now "products") page? It's basically the same, plus main "landing page"... ooookay.
Any case study of beta users? While I see the potential, it is possible to create practice tests using Gumroad like Udemy has, does this feature help in that direction?
Very excited to see Gumroad entering this space. I'm disappointed that there's no way to generate member RSS feeds for podcasts. Any plans to add that in the future?
Is it possible to have one-off prices on the same sales page as membership prices? I recently launched a product with a one-off, lifetime access price, but would like to add a monthly membership option and offer both options on the same sales page. Is that possible or do I have to create two separate product listings?
@samuel_briskar Gumroad Memberships has been over a year in the making. I joined Gumroad as a creator back in May, so lots of things that to me seem like they have always been part of the platform were actually added to set up Memberships.
Launching features as we go lets us make sure they work well with every other aspect of Gumroad and to deliver incremental value to our creators as quickly as possible. We just launched the ability for your customers to change their own tier on a membership, which we considered to be the last major thing the feature set needed to be ready for primetime. Thus, with the feature set in place, here we are.
Here is an incomplete list of things we created for Memberships:
Creators can now:
- Set limit of active members per tier
- Set different pricing (per subscription period) per tier
- Allow for pay-what-you-want per tier
- Allow for different files per tier
- Send posts to each tier (or multiple at the same time)
- Change a customer's tier for them, e.g. to bump them for free
- Send out posts via email, their profile, or both
Customers can now:
- Change their tier whenever they wish
- Change their duration period whenever they wish
- View posts on the web and in our app
We still have a few more features for Memberships on our public roadmap: https://www.notion.so/gumroad/Ro...
@jonas_kgomo Yep! Between the ability to generate license keys and the ability to read purchases through the API it is straightforward to integrate it with lots of different SaaS and communities, so why not both!
I will say that Gumroad Memberships may not be ideal for complex SaaS billing use cases, but for simpler X/month & Y/year subscriptions or tiers thereof, it is fantastic!
