Hey PH fam! πŸ‘‹ Mike here, co-founder & CEO of Grain. After ten months of private beta development, we’re SO excited to announce here on Product Hunt that we’re removing the waitlist for Grain and releasing an all-new Windows app (in addition to our existing Mac app)! πŸ™Œ Teams like Zapier, InVision, Wistia, Slack and more are already using Grain to better understand their customers, users, and each other. And now you can too. We hope that you'll sign-up for free at https://grain.co and give us your feedback to help make Grain even better. πŸ’ͺ -------- What's new about Grain 1.0? πŸ™Œ No more waitlist πŸ–₯ Support for Windows πŸ”Ž Search 🏷 Tags ✏️ Live highlights in notepad πŸ‘―β€β™‚οΈ Co-op live note-taking πŸ“œ 80% more accurate transcripts πŸ”„. Share recordings with guests πŸ’ͺ Grain Pro & Unlimited subscriptions ✨ Whole new look + logo -------- So what is Grain? πŸ€” Grain makes it easy to record, transcribe, and share the best parts of Zoom video calls in seconds, not hours. ⚑️ Grain integrates with your existing video meeting workflows (Zoom only for now) to import the recording, transcribe, and make it all searchable across all of your recorded calls. And when you want to share an important moment, Grain makes it absurdly easy to visually create highlight excerpts via text-first video editing. Each video highlight has a unique link that you can embed directly in your favorite apps like Slack, Notion, Medium and Coda. And with the Grain LIVE desktop app, you can even take time-stamped notes during calls and create short video highlights -- it'll save you loads of time and allow you to take up to 90% fewer notes. You can use Grain with your team to create a shared library of important conversations with users, prospects, stakeholders, or internal team meetings -- there are no limits to the number of people you can add to your workspace. -------- Why did we build it? 🧱 Grain's Purpose is to increase shared understanding in the world and our Mission is to help others to listen and be heard. Actually... this highlight I flagged using Grain during a brainstorming session is the exact moment where I was able to articulate this purpose and mission for the first time: https://grain.co/highlight/oH3OB... And if you actually watched that highlight just now, you'll have experienced for yourself a little bit of why we're so excited about what we're building. -- Mike and the team at Grain P.S. @mgadams3 this is great man, excited to see it out in the wild!

@mgadams3 WOW! I've been waiting for exactly this tool since the pandemic started. I cannot wait to share it with everyone at work. Tons of times every week I want to just send a little video clip of a meeting to a colleague but the effort necessary to pull it out of a recorded call is so intense that I never do it BUT WITH GRAIN that effort drops to zero. I don't have to worry about a text message being misinterpreted because with Grain clips my friends can hear my intonation and see my posture. Grain is a must-have for remote work in 2020.
Jake Seip
Super legit. Congrats. If you think about it, it's sort of nuts that these days most knowledge workers collaborate over video calls, but all of that data and interaction is ephemeral. Even if the call is recorded, knowledge is essentially lost as soon as the call ends because there is no easy way to search for content, share snippets, etc. If you're trying to run a globally distributed remote-first company it doesn't make sense to run it without Grain. Congrats Mike and Jake!
Mike Adams
@lucas_davis Thanks for the kind words Lucas and I couldn't agree more. Information sharing is all about ease of use and that's been our focus.
Mike Adams
@jake_seip πŸ’― it's crazy how much valuable information we let "fall to the floor" simply because it's too much word to capture in a way that's useful. The real-time note-taking is a critical aspect here.

I am extremely excited to hunt Grain's official 1.0 Many of the PH community have been avid beta testers of it over the last months :) Grain makes it easy to make long zoom calls accessible for those who weren't able to join. Example usecases could be important team calls or customer research interviews.
Adam Kazwell
@andreasklinger it's a must have for customer research interviews!

I have been using Grain for a few months now ... and it's a true game changerπŸ‘‡ I spend >6hrs per *day* on Zoom, often back to back calls. It's safe to say, I don't have time to take notes after the call ... and at the end of the day I just can't recall what was important and what wasn't. Using Grain, I've been able to take a few timestamped notes during each call. Super easy, low friction. And I can go back and check my notes ... in context! With the recording surrounding it. Tl;dr: I can finally extract a ton more value from all the time I spend in Zoom calls
Mike Adams
@guillaumecabane So many of my favorite Grain highlights of you professing your love for Grain πŸ˜‚... but this one from our onboarding call back in April is an all-time favorite: https://grain.co/highlight/iteKa...

@guillaumecabane @bruno_cunha1 thanks Bruno! Glad you like it

Grain made it a charm for me to make sense of & communicate the results of an extensive qualitative market research abroad, when travel restrictions didn't allow me to go. No comparison to entire Zoom recordings! I used it in a way that I entered all "snippets" or links into a huge database (5k+), gave each of them a semantic tag & more useful information relevant to the research. That allowed other team members in the client's company to search the entire database (125 interviews, ~40 snippets each) for discreet qualitative data like "mentioned : Competitor X/Y", "mentions: feature Z, positive/negative". Concrete use cases were "what does a certain market segment think about competitor X in geography Y" or ""what does a certain market segment think about feature Z in geography Y". With a little bit of a work-around, I could bundle the most important snippets of a given research question into mini video-reports to share with the the management. They could "pressure load" on qualitative information, given by actual people, in the actual market. E.g. one video would show 30 different interviewees explaining their opinion on a competitor X in geography Y, back to back, ~15 sec. each, so ~7 min. of high-level information told by real users. Compare this to the standard research reports full of charts & infographics... There's just so much qualitative information that gets lost when 1) giving interviews a strict guideline, which most transcription software requires to work well (human communication is not linear!) 2) transcribing spoken word into text 3) reading text that someone else has transcribed Loved it & will use again for a similar project!

@jonas_wind Thanks Jonas! So glad to have had you in our early access!

Awesome product! Much improved on zoom's own tools and I can see this being an essential add-on for any zoom user who records regularly. 100% a new long term customer!
Mike Adams
@johncavendish Thanks so much for being an early user John! Means the world 🌎
Cosmin Trufasila
As a designer in these work from home days, filled with Zoom calls, I found Grain to be invaluable for keeping track of feedback, tagging and extracting key highlights to improve my process.
Mike Adams
@ctrufasila Thanks so much, that means a lot!
Hiten Shah
Such a useful tool for product people. It just makes sense to do customer research using Grain once you try it. Saves so much time across the entire process of gathering and analyzing qualitative information that typically required multiple tools stitched together plus a lot more effort to organize and find insights.
Mike Adams
@hnshah Thanks so much for the support Hiten! Can't wait to work on an @usefyi integration sometime :)
Todd Patton
It's actually amazing to look back at my hand written notes from video calls and realize how much information was lost during those meetings. We interview our customers (coaches and analysts) from around the sports world to create content/get feedback, and the hours I used to spend manually going through recordings has been eliminated because Grain makes it so seamless to mark the strongest quotes live. Plus, the ability to quickly review those moments and create shareable clips from the transcript is a game changer. Such a useful and necessary tool in today's world.
Mike Adams
@toddpatton That's such a great use case, thanks for sharing Todd!
Adam Kazwell
Grain is a cheat code to unlock so much value from meetings. Automatic transcripts + the ability to create shareable snippets as quick as highlighting text makes extracting and sharing meeting insights effortless. Best of all - it's so much easier to be truly present in a meeting when I know I can revisit the transcripts/video as soon as the meeting is over. With Grain, I can be a better listener and participant, allowing me to have more in depth conversations. Would go so far as to say that startups that use Grain will have a competitive advantage thanks to accelerated learning & sharing of knowledge. Don't let all that time spent in Zoom go to waste!
Mike Adams
@kaz up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start is my personal favorite Grain cheat code.. 😜. Thanks so much Adam, glad you've been enjoying Grain!

Grain has really helped me remember and capture follow-ups from the many video meetings I now take over Zoom. Such a useful product.
Mike Adams
@daveambrose @edmundamoye Haha, I can def relate to the desire to be Zoom meeting host for this reason
Scott Moss
Grain has become my go-to tool when conducting user sessions over zoom. It's like have a team member join you and take perfect notes. I can't go back now πŸš€
Mike Adams
@scotups Nothing hits quite like a juicy customer quote that is exactly what you need to build a case as a product person... πŸ”

We have used Grain actively during the beta period over the last few months. Honestly, I don't want to live without it anymore. As a fully distributed team, taking collaborative timestamped notes during Zoom calls alone is a killer feature for us. Having seen the evolution of the product during the beta to a stable and incredibly useful tool, I am really excited to see Grain developing further in the coming months and years.
Mike Adams
@mhonig Likewise, we've been lucky to have your team using Grain these past several months!
Greg Van Horn
Grain is an absolute game changer! I think we were a very early user and it has been amazing for collaboration as we moved to full remote early this year. Our most common use cases: 1 - interviews great for sharing snippets with the interview team for follow up and to dive deeper 2 - product learning - I spend a lot of time talking to our largest customers leadership and it's great for sharing snippets with our org for tactile follow-up. Mike and the Grain team keep up the awesome work!
Mike Adams
@greg_van_horn Thanks Greg. You and Kris are up there for highest volume of amazing feedback. Cheers!
Jeff Gardner
We've been using Grain since early in the beta here at Graphy and it's been immensely helpful, not only to keep our user interviews in order but also to pass along the feedback to engineers in a targeted, easy to digest format. I love how fast the team has been improving the product and the support has been excellent from day 1. πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ Congrats to the team!
Mike Adams
@erskingardner Thanks Jeff! Your team at Graphy has been unbelievably helpful in your feedback. Keep it coming!
Rob Fitzpatrick
Grain is the answer to the longstanding question of how to take good notes for remote custdev calls. Killer tool.
Mike Adams
@robfitz Thanks Rob! Well you LITERALLY wrote the book on the topic so that means a lot! I don't believe that we'd have found this market opportunity at all were it not for The Mom Test teaching us how to talk to users the right way.
Adam Braun
Grain is a phenomenal product and so timely for today’s remote work environment. It’s a total gamechanger!
Mike Adams
@adambraun Thanks Adam! Excited for your new venture, sounds like Grain is already coming in handy for your customer research.
Nikhil Basu Trivedi
It’s been fantastic to use Grain for the past several months. Being able to tie my notes directly to video clips has been a gamechanger in my collaboration with partners. Having the transcript to be able to search and find a part of a meeting I want to revisit is hugely helpful. I’m excited to see where Grain goes... once you start using it for your video calls, it doesn’t make sense to stop. I can see this becoming a core part of every team's stack, such as Slack , Zoom itself, and newer useful asynchronous collaboration tools such as Loom. Congrats @mgadams3 and @jakecadams on launch!
Mike Adams
@jakecadams @nbt Thanks Nikhil! Was awesome to see how quickly Grain became a core part of our workflow. Please keep the feedback coming!
Jordan Husney
We've been lucky enough to be using an early version of Grain and it's a real vision of the future: highlighting segments from recorded calls to share with the team on Slack is a big win. We use Grain to help spread sales practices that work and capture and cite evidence during product feedback sessions. Updates have been swift and it's been exciting to see this product grow and change by this killer team.
Mike Adams
@jrhusney I'll never forget tweeting about the same event while Eric Yuan was speaking and then later learning we were sitting next to each other... So pumped to have your team using Grain and thanks for all the feedback.
Jordan Husney
@mgadams3 I'll also never forget what Eric was talking about, "we took 4 years to build Zoom, then 4 years to scale Zoom, we probably waited too long to get back to building something new..." Thank goodness for folks like you and companies like Grain
Deirdre Clute
I’ve been huge the Grain beta for 8 months. Huge fan. I use Grain for any important meeting that I know my team will want to hear about. Grain allows me to record videos in bite sized portions so I actually watch them. It's much more impactful to watch a few 5 sec highlights than read it in someone else's notes. I'd recommend giving it a try!
Mike Adams
@deedsc Hear hear! Thanks Deirdre!
