Gowalla's back! Of course, just in time for SXSW.
@jw – Curious what the biggest changes or learnings you're bringing to Gowalla since its first launch 16 (!!!) years ago?
@mycelebs_elle besides our experience with v1 (13 years ago now?), the entire team has collectively ranked up dozens of experiences at other startups over the years. I think we did a good job of learning how to pace ourselves, making though product decisions etc. Excited for the future, this is only the start 🙂
What a blast from the past! I'm not sure my sleepy suburb is going to be the target market for this, but let's see if I can make it happen.
It's my first time hearing of Gowalla and I'm intrigued. Sounds like a fun yet super useful way to quickly call your friends to wherever you are to hang out. Congrats on the launch!
As a tinkerer in this space (one of the many PH posted apps called truffle, 2015-8) https://www.producthunt.com/prod... I really wanted to try the chat, because that's what we were trying to build out. I noticed that the contacts uploader won't work for me, and as of now that's the only way it would enable friend connections. Can someone add me so I can see?
@tomlimongello we’re seeing some launch-day gremlins, including the contact connect stuff which we hope to solve soon. Meanwhile you can search for people and add them that way 🙂
@maxvoltar so good to see your face on here. Congrats @jw and team. Can't wait to take this for a spin in Greenville. I desperately want better ways to connect with my real friends both near me and those who are far or traveling. I'm grateful you all have taken on the challenge.

True story, Gowalla was instrumental in meeting my wife. I used it to plan our first dates and it really impressed her at the time. I hope it brings some of the original features back like the ability to leave designated messages to friends. :)

So damn stoked to see Gowalla back! The OG! Especially poignant now with the void left by Zenly's shelving. (Kudos to the Zenly team for keeping the space alive)
I appreciate the fact that this platform is privacy-focused and doesn't rely on invasive tracking technologies. This platform will be a valuable resource for anyone looking to discover new places and experiences in their local area.
Such a cool idea! Can you turn on and off sharing in the app easily? Just thinking what if I want to go somewhere I don't want others to see :D
@thedontgetrekt Right now all your checkins are shared with your friends. (that's why we make it very clear to not "friend" everyone, but carefully select the audience you're comfortable sharing your checkins with) Later we'll add the ability to set the privacy levels on a per-checkin base.
Congrats on the launch, y'all! Getting to use Gowalla again for the last several months has been a treat. Looking forward to what comes next, and to having so many more of my friends on!
I was a happy Gowalla user the first time around. When it ended, I moved to 4sq, who promptly let their product stagnate for years. I hope the New Gowalla can bring back the easy fun of social location sharing. Good luck!
@andrew_rich Hoping with the public release of Gowalla, Foursquare will take notice and actually do something to revamp their stagnant platform since I've accumulated a decade of check-ins. But either way, I'm happy that Gowalla is here, and I get to experience it since I didn't get a chance to on the first time around!
One of my favorite apps is back and I couldn't be more thrilled with this latest version. Kudos to @maxvoltar @jw and the entire team. See you all out there on the social map!
