Nice work, @rorybro and team. Super impressed with how smooth the GIF-creation process is in the browser. GIFs are usually awkward and slow to manage. I made this GIF of Bieber rolling down a hill via this YouTube video (but you can also use videos from Vine and Instagram):
Rory O'Reilly
@rrhoover Ryan, thanks so much for the Hunt! Facebook videos, twitter videos, existing gifs, heck, even world star hip hop videos! The gifs.com team can't wait to see what everyone will make.
Nitesh Manav
First of all, thank you for making this. I love creative GIFs and since last few weeks, I was searching tirelessly for a good gif converter or editor. The best that I could found was giphy.com but that have only basic editing features. In fact, there is even no option to write more than captions ( as for meme generation, we need to write on both, top and bottom of a video and to do all these work, I had to use Photoshop till now. Anyway, let's talk gifs.com now, I have used it today for few hours and found it much more advanced than any other online gif creation tool. So, thank you. Now here are some feedbacks for some feature inclusion and modifications. 1. I didn't find any way to edit uploaded gif or video other than YouTube videos. That's bad. Suppose, I uploaded a new plain gif and now I want to shorten it's length, add some captions or maybe to include some effects. As of now, it appeared possible only with YouTube Videos. How can I do so with other videos, gifs or uploaded gifs? 2. While selecting start point and end point on YouTube Videos, Is there any keyboard shortcut key to forward or backward videos so that we can select these points precisely. Because while selecting it using mouse or touchpad, I can't select these points precisely and you must be knowing that even a millisecond of extra clip can spoil the fun of a gif. On giphy.com, they allowed "previous and next arrow key" on keyboard to do this work. Here the same keys are not working. 3. There are many great features, but not SLOWMO, are you thinking to add some speed slowing features? 4. Any option to convert .mp4 or any local video file into GIFs? 5. You must be aware of some funny gifs of "Expectation vs Reality" concept, In such gifs, we need to add videos or gif from two sources. Suppose I want 3 seconds from one YouTube Video and 3 seconds from other and then merge it into a new gif. Can it be done? 6. What if I want to add some captions or text in my previously created GIFs on gifs.com, I didn't get any option to edit gifs. Please add such feature. Thank you. Nitesh
Rory O'Reilly
@niteshmanav Nitesh, thank you so much for the in depth response! I'm so glad that you enjoyed gifs.com, and even more pumped to see all of your awesome feedback. I'd love to see some of the gifs you made if you could share! 1) For #1, we actually do that! I think maybe we need to make it more clear on the site? If you drop any video onto gifs.com, it'll take you to the editor! Also, if you drop the .gif link, it'll take you to the editor. If it's saved locally on your computer you can upload it as well! However, when you don't drop a link, but rather search, we limit our search to YT videos right now. I think it'd be neat to have more search options. What do you think? 2) Right now there is no keyboard shortcut, but we actually want to add one really soon (it's not too hard!). Can I ping you when it's up? 3) Slowmo is definitely a feature that we want! Our back-end team is most likely going to take 2 weeks of optimization (asynchronous calls to create different types of media), but slowmo will most likely be out within the next month :). 4) Yes! When you hit "create gif" we actually make and transcode a webm, mp4, and gif (among a few other things...) at the same exact time (woah!). If you change the extension of the .gif url to .mp4 or .webm, it's right there :D. 5) It can be done, and it will! There's a subreddit (are you on reddit?) that's dedicated to what they call "combination gifs". 6) This will be out very soon! Nitesh, thanks so much for your awesome feedback. If you drop me a line @ rory@gifs.com I'd love to update you when we push out some of the features you requested. If anything I'll update here as well. If anything else comes to mind all ears always! Many thanks.
Nitesh Manav
@rorybro @gifs : Thank you very much for the detailed response. In fact, I am loving it so much that I am unable to stop playing with it :). One thing, that is very clear from your reply and that is- you are all set to make it the biggest GIF tool ever created and I really appreciate that. Now more feedbacks and responses to your response :) 1. Actually, you are right, but it took a while to me realise that when we upload or drop or link any gif or video on your homepage, it redirect us to gif editor but when we click "Create a GIF" and then select " Upload GIF", then it doesn't redirect to GIF Editor. But I can't understand, only naive user do things that are available on the homepage :) For me "create a gif" was a "call to action" button. So, please enable the same feature their too to avoid confusion. 2. I want to see "gifs.com" as the only that should come into someone's mind if they think about gifs and to do so, we have to make it much more than just an editing tool or gif-creating platform. We need to make a social platform for gif just as Instagram is for image or YouTube is for video. It would be awesome to see Gifs.com for gif in the same line. But to make it so, you have to give user option to make gif channels here. Suppose my gifs username is tomatoheart. so, I should be able to make gifs channel with my channel like this : https://gifs.com/tomatoheart . Giphy.com does that ... and then you have to a give us an option to write little intro and then add our website links as well as many other social links to our channel homepage. I am sure you all must be doing something in this area. 3. I have to upload same stickers again and again. Why don't you make it able to get stored it in my account . if there is space limit ( which I don't think there is ) , you can limit maximum 5 sticker store limit or something like that. 4. You give us an option to link our social site or custom website on each gifs to gain popularity when it will be played on gifs player but again I am not able to save this custom website for all my gifs. I have to individually select and write my website link and name everytime I create a new gif. I think you can put this option under setting by giving user option to select any link ( own website, twitter or facebook profile etc.) by default and then if user want to change this behaviour for some particular gif, they can always change it individually. What do you say? I didn't know if it's called "combination gifs" as I am not that active on Reddit but yes, this is what I am talking about. I will surely want to know about any future updates regarding this website. I am loving it with my full heart even now but will love to see more and more feature addition into this soon-to-be a big internet giant :) . PS: you will soon receive a gif-mail from me. :) Cheers, Nitesh Manav
Nitesh Manav
@rorybro @gifs One more thing, I am trying to create my 6th gif, through gifs.com but it is showing me this error again and again . "Your GiF Could not be created at this time". Is there any limit to gif creation per hour or something ? :)
Rory O'Reilly
@niteshmanav Thank you so much for the kind response Nitesh! 1. Ahhh this makes sense. I definitely see what you're saying! Maybe if it was more clear the different ways to create a gif - hmm. Will noodle on this one. 2. Hmmm, we've thought about having channels for sure! You can add your credit to your gif by linking it back. Right now we're focusing really hard on video augmenting, but channels might be an interesting way to show your content off. I wonder if there is an interesting way that shows off your content, while also encouraging people to edit and remix it. 3. This is a great idea - and a bonus for making an account! 4. Yes - this is also perfect! Right now if you link twitter you won't have to do it again, but for some you might - will look into this and fix it! Nitesh, thanks so much for all of your insight - very much appreciated :D.
Rory O'Reilly
@niteshmanav No limit at all! Looking into it now as per your email :D. Will make sure this doesn't happen again.
Rory O'Reilly
It's our pleasure to launch with such a great community, gather all feedback, and announce the first video augmenter of it's kind. Grab any video you can think of (Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Instagram, World Star HipHop, YouTube, etc.), or an existing .gif, and drop it onto gifs.com. EDIT: and now any live video (think Facebook live, Youtube live, Periscope, Twitch, etc.) You'll be able to create awesome memes, impress your friends, edit videos, all in the blink of an eye. We can't wait to see what you'll create! --- want to drop a line? I'm @ rory@gifs.com, and we'll all be here all day :)
Paul de Fombelle
impressive! A feature to insert credits to the author of the video would be great.
Rory O'Reilly
@paulodef @jimcanto Totally agree! Actually, if you use a youtube video it's automagic! There's even a "watch full video" button, where when you click it, it starts playing the YT video automatically, at the time stamp of the clip you made. We call it the gifs player We should definitely add support (at least in linking back) to the original content, and we will! Thank you for the suggestion :)
Rory O'Reilly
@kausmukherjee Thanks so much for the kind words. Makes all of us here @ gifs smile :')
Paul de Fombelle
Watermark + bad resolution --> quite unusable. My initial enthusiasm is gone :(
Rory O'Reilly
@paulodef Adding HD as we speak! Is this from a screen capture btw? Looks even double as grainy.
Abe Storey
Amazing @rorybro ! Would love a mobile gif creation experience that's just as badass as gifs.com . Mobile app coming any time soon? PS: How is your experience as Thiel Fellow?
Rory O'Reilly
@abe_storey he he he. Mobile is definitely on our mind ;). Any chance you know any good mobile developers? Being a Thiel Fellow is great - my brother (who is our co-founder and CTO) is also a fellow. We left school a little over a year before becoming fellows, so we have some experience being able to compare working on gifs.com before/after. One of the best things about the fellowship is the community - although we're most likely always working, it's nice to be able to have shared camaraderie (almost like in college). This camaraderie exists as whole in the startup community, but when you get to know someone more deeply because you see them, or because you went through something together, you become closer and feel more part of something. We were already out of school, so the fellowship didn't push us out or something, but if you're really passionate and want to work on something, the fellowship is great.
Abe Storey
@rorybro I know a few. I'll see what I can do. What's your email? Regarding Thiel Fellowship, well said. Most companies / startups are finite. Meaningful connections and camaraderie is infinite. :)
Rory O'Reilly
@abe_storey Thanks so much Abe :'). My email is rory@gifs.com
Sydney Liu
Congrats @RoryBro! Been using this product since 6 months back and have LOVED it. Fantastic product. Whenever I needed a YouTube video converted. The new editor looks amazing. Is there any control over the file size and resolution? I remember the resolution being a bit lower than I liked when I used it previously. Congratulations! I'm sure the community will love the product as much as I have :D
Rory O'Reilly
@sydney_liu_sl Sydney thanks so much for the comment! A few cool things now - you can do almost any video (not just youtube! Facebook, twitter, instagra, etc. etc.) on gifs.com- and if you're searching for a YT video, you can do so directly on gifs.com. Right now there's no control on file size and resolution - although this is slotted for next month! The output on our site is actually a .webm, .mp4, and .gif, all transcoded simultaneously and under 10seconds (including the .jpg preview, effects added, etc.)The .webms and .mp4s are quite high quality, and the .gif is, well about average .gif quality. We pride ourselves on being one of if not the fastest transcoders out there for webms/gifs/mp4s. In our next update, we're looking to do the .gifs asynchronously, displaying a fair .gif quality fast, and then generating a HD copy in the background.
Tom Charde
Very pleased to see that someone finally put a browser-based tool together. The control panel UI is a bit cryptic (hierarchy, nesting, expected behavior of icons, trigger consistency, active state confusion), and the user flow isn't quite intuitive yet -- but this is a great start. Congrats and well done.
Rory O'Reilly
@tomcharde Tom thanks so much for your comment and insight. I know this is a really broad question, but I'd love to hear how you think we could improve the UI/UX? Even the smallest insight/pain points/ideas is helpful to hear. Many thanks :).
Tom Charde
@rorybro Sure. Can we connect on Twitter so I can PM you?
Rory O'Reilly
@tomcharde Boom! Followed from our @gifscom account!
Dave Byun
I've just created my first gif ever! I'm actually working on my Kickstarter campaign page and you guys are making my job A LOT easier. Thanks!!
Rory O'Reilly
@bagel_labs Dave, we all love these comments (and also great gif btw!). We make a .webm, and .mp4 if that fits your fancy (just changing the extension will show em'). Let us know if there's anything we can do to make your job even easier! Much love.
Eric Nakagawa
@bagel_labs Whoa, I want this for body measurement!
Rory O'Reilly
@ericnakagawa @bagel_labs wait you're actually so right. I was looking at custom jeans/shirts the other day (just curious), and had no idea where to even start and stopped looking. These sites need to ship me this measuring tool ;).
Dave Byun
@ericnakagawa I really wouldn't want to advertise my project on RoryBro's PH page but we will be launching soon too! :) @rorybro I will make sure to add you and Gifs.com to our campaign's thank you list for making my job so much easier ;)
Rory O'Reilly
@bagel_labs @ericnakagawa ahhh that's so sweet of you :'). Please ping me too so I can grab one, if possible!
Jesse Leimgruber
This is seriously going to revolutionize, and create, so many new Reddit communities. Literally nothing like this exists on the market, crazy stuff guys. I thank you, the world thanks you, but most importantly... The internet thanks you.
Rory O'Reilly
@jesserank Jesse, you're the best - thank you for the kind words. @ Gifs.com we're all a huge fan of wasted gifs, and in the sidebar on that subreddit, it actually says We still have a little ways to go to make the perfect wasted gif, but adding text to gifs, cropping gifs, timing effects, uploading crazy things and timing them perfectly -it's all there. In our beta trials we're seeing people use them in ways I would have never thought of. For example, a close brother to wasted gifs is busted gifs: We're looking forward to seeing how everyone will tweak memes, create new trends, and augment videos :').
Marc Littlemore
Absolutely love this! The editor is intuitive and simple to use. Nice one @RoryBro.
Rory O'Reilly
@marclittlemore Thank you Marc! Gotta give all the love to the gifs.com team :'). They've done some crazy stuff with transcoding to make everything super duper fast (even with mp4s/webms!).
Marc Littlemore
@rorybro It's definitely a great interface. One enhancement I'd like to see (when you get the chance!) - I'd like to be able to see the end frame when I change the end length marker. Doesn't look like it does that at the moment. Cheers!
Rory O'Reilly
@marclittlemore Marc - 100%. This will be up within the next 2 weeks! Thank you :D.
Niv Dror
The URL is GIFs.com 👏👏 This is soooo cool I made GIF
Rory O'Reilly
@nivo0o0 Your comment is cracking me up aha. Also, I love in your twitter bio that you say you make gifs professionally. Any chance you want to see something not yet live on gifs.com ?
Niv Dror
@rorybro yes! please email me first name @producthunt.com or DM on Twitter :)
Rory O'Reilly
@nivo0o0 @producthunt Will do! You're the best <3.
Ryan Hoover
@rorybro haha, part of @nivo0o0's job description is "GIF producer" basically. On a related note: how did you get the domain gifs.com!? 😱
Rory O'Reilly
@jimcanto @nivo0o0 @producthunt Niv is the man. Aha, I used to buy and sell domains back in the day :'). When we were working on gifyoutube (later gifyt...now gifs.com), we realized we needed to rebrand, and we targeted gifs.com and made it happen. Was actually reading through the email conversations the other day - time flies!
Sian Morley⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great website! Everyone loves a good gif :) Can't wait to have a real play with this website. Further comments with gifs included to be added...
Rory O'Reilly
@sian_midas Sian! Thanks for the kind words. I'd love to see what you make and hear any suggestions you have! I'm Rory@gifs.com :).
Gif Lingua
Will be checking this out fully. . Our editors create a lot of gifs for language learners and as language points (as language learning objects). So improvements and tools like this get us super excited!
Rory O'Reilly
@giflingua I'm laughing SO hard at your gif. Your killing it ahahahha. Also, if you ever want to use the webm version or mp4 version (not sure if it'll be helpful in your line of work?), you can just change the extension to .webm and .mp4 :)
Rory O'Reilly
@gabrielreynard Thank you Gabriel! :D
Greig Cranfield
Horray for more gifs!
Rory O'Reilly
@1greigcranfield Woop Woop! If you have any feedback would always love to hear :D. Many thanks!
Eric Nakagawa
Rory and his team have built the BEST gif creator on the internet. Trust me, I know gifs.
Rory O'Reilly
@ericnakagawa Ahhh coming from the founder of cheezburger this is big <3. Thank you Eric :'). Also pumping out .webms and .mp4s too for the video crowd :D. The transcoding is crazy, and everyone can use it with our API!
Katie Weiler
Having the GIF of Obama's mic drop is enough for an upvote.
Rory O'Reilly
@katie_weiler YASSS. Thank you Katie.
Jim Canto
Head is spinning with possibilities.
Rory O'Reilly
@jimcanto Yes! This is just the beginning of our roadmap for easy video augmentation! Would love to hear what you'd like to see.
