What is metaverse?

Everyone seems to be much indulged in this topic. I still have no idea what is it. 🙄 Can anyone explain it in simple words?

Seeing at the comments, I don't have to repeat what it means but I will share my views on it. Metaverse is the hint of our future internet activities. It has not been widely accepted by masses but that is also because of the lacking infrastructure. It's like electric cars, once it becomes possible to use it, we will surely experience it too. It might become a parallel world with our typical internet. Endless possibilities.

A single, shared, immersive, persistent, 3D virtual space where humans experience life in ways they could not in the physical world.

You can view the meta universe as a new version of the Internet, or a new vision. There, people gather to communicate, collaborate and share through personalized virtual images on any device.

I think the biggest problem right now is that companies try to pitch metaverse as some dream the future rather than what is actually in existence right now. For example, Meta had an hour or more long discussion of their future plans but everything was produced in such a way that you just see film and CGI effects while people are telling you about technology that you would rather just see itself. I think the fact that the technology is so reliant on VR headsets is an issue with the marketing because you simply can’t experience it without having the headset on. The closest I’ve come to getting more familiar with what people are actually talking about it by following top contributors to that community on LinkedIn. I get multiple posts a week on my feed in which someone shares a screen recording of them building something in a virtual world and their post discusses what they see as the implications of the technology.
