The Maker vs. Hunter Dilemma: Which Side Are You On?

Product Hunt is a bustling marketplace of ideas, where makers showcase their latest creations and hunters eagerly seek out the next big thing. But there's one question that has long plagued this vibrant community: who holds the true power, makers or hunters? On one side, makers pour their hearts and souls into crafting innovative products, fueled by a passion to solve problems and delight users. They spend countless hours refining their ideas, tirelessly testing and tweaking their creations until they reach perfection. Without makers, Product Hunt would be a barren wasteland, devoid of the groundbreaking products that shape the digital landscape. On the other hand, hunters are the lifeblood of the Product Hunt ecosystem, tirelessly scouring the platform for hidden gems and bringing them to the forefront. They are the curators of taste, the tastemakers who guide the community's attention towards the most promising products. Without hunters, many brilliant creations would remain undiscovered, languishing in obscurity. So, which side holds the true power in this delicate balance?

Makers. And I'm telling that as a hunter. In general, it's bette to have an experienced Hunter to know when to post, how to post, what visuals are the best etc. But it's possible to post as a Maker and make it to the top. I watched a productHunt webinar on YT when the team was encouraging Makers to post porducts by themselves!

The hunters. If a good idea was enough then punching the upload button on a design-free skeleton of an app would work out well for everyone. But generally this isn't going to work out. Design is needed, and then comes social acceptance and uptake. Design helps to get the attention of the hunters, who then provide a marketing and social acceptance element. It's a whole process.

In a movie, the director is more important to the public than the producer; because the quality of its content depends on the creator. In painting, we remember the painter before the patron. The author of the fresco in the Sistine Chapel is Michelangelo, not a pope. People remember the rock star, not the record label or their manager. However, in technology, if the CEO is fired, many people assume that he has been betrayed..., which is a serious mistake. And it is for this reason that there are no longer any great geniuses.

It's difficult to say who holds the true power in the Product Hunt community, as both makers and hunters play crucial roles in shaping the platform. Makers bring innovation and creativity to the table, while hunters help to amplify and promote these creations. Ultimately, it's the collaboration and synergy between the two that makes Product Hunt such a dynamic and thriving marketplace.
