[IDEA] for PH Team - Can we create our own Topic Forums?

10
This is an idea that I believe it would be very valuable. There are a few pre-created forums like p/claude, p/notion etc. However, why can we not create our own? Let's say I am a KOL in a vertical, let that be crypto, AI, deep tech, marketing, building apps or whatever. Why can I not kick off a Forum with a particular focus? The moderation should be similar, no spam, no bad behaviour etc etc. I think it would be a great initiative for people to chat about more targeted stuff and maybe build their own brands here in PH. Instead of getting lost in the p/general. Looking forward to your feedback. Also, anyone from the community, please share your opinion as well. Cheers !

I think that if everybody created their own forum, it could be "mess" – many forums with single contributors.

@busmark_w_nika it could get messy yes. But it could be moderated in a smarter way. Also, the topic cannot be very granular. Like it can be a tag, AI, Crypto, Marketing, SEO etc etc. The amount of posts could also be regulated per day, and the logic behind. i.e if a post does not generate engagement/value within X amount of time, burry it. Brutal lol

@busmark_w_nika Exactly why I am concerned about :)

@cryptosymposium The this is related also with moderation because for the PH it could be harder. And AI could sometimes detect some convo wrongly and remove it. The more complex it is and if the resources of the PH team are limited, the sooner it can get out of the hands :D but interesting experimental concept :)

This is an interesting idea, and I see the appeal, it would allow experts and enthusiasts to build niche communities within PH, fostering deeper discussions. However, I also have a concern here. If everyone starts creating their own forums, the platform could become fragmented, with more emphasis on growing engagement rather than meaningful contributions. Maybe a middle ground could work? Instead of fully user-created forums, PH could introduce a nomination or approval process for new topic forums. That way, only high-quality, relevant topics get added, ensuring discussions stay valuable rather than just turning into engagement farms. What do you think? @cryptosymposium

@whatshivamdo yeah exactly. there should be a filtering/moderation process. Otherwise it would indeed get messy. In the end of the day, maybe not even needed to make particular forum topics. Maybe in the general, we can add our own tags or something. Or a specific format for the title. To showcase right away the subject/topic category

@cryptosymposium @whatshivamdo The nomination idea is a good way to gauge what people actually need in terms of new forums! It could be helpful for speaking about particular topics that may have a smaller audience than the general group.

@cryptosymposium The real fun is getting lost in general discussions...that's where the magic happens...Straight, unfiltered feedback....both Good/Bad. Niche forums might called structured, but they also risk becoming echo chamber. Open spaces bring fresh perspectives, challenge ideas, and keep things real.

@cryptosymposium We were literally talking about this today as a group!

We opted for fewer forums to avoid them from becoming echo chambers (and it's admittedly easier to moderate). With smaller, focused forums, we also run the risk of them becoming inactive. Still, we are absolutely looking for other ways people can get involved in a genuine way. You're also 100% welcome to start a discussion about "crypto, AI, deep tech, marketing, building apps or whatever," and then share a link to it across social media.

Some ways we're looking to address this could be by having the community itself do more self-moderation (similar to how Reddit has moderators) or encouraging posts in the p/general forum to be high quality, hopefully inspiring others to get involved as a result.

Definitely interested in other ways the community wants to engage outside of launches, and maybe we'll have the option to create your own forum in the future, but please keep this feedback coming!

@ben_griese thanks for the reply Ben ! Also, i think we just chatted via email lol ! Yeah, this needs to be carefully crafted. And as you want to avoid inactive or spammy stuff, testing it out first would be wise to do.

So, something maybe like a tag? when creating threads. Or a particular Title pattern. Like how Hacker News has Show HN: when you want to promote your product. Something similar to show that this is not a generic post, but a heavily knowledgeable one, where people should be careful what they contribute/reply.

Just an idea.

Keep it real !
