I would say it's important, but make sure you have other media in place first.
I consider it supplemental. If you have the time, do it, but I know plenty of people who will never watch a video.
All they want is the quick summary of what you product does.
@olive_haus I have some nice slides with screen shots and a 30 second sizzle video.
Ironically, I created the video with type frames in two hours. Really great product.
I’m stuck between a commercial, a demo or a tutorial … which one do you think is perfect a launch?
(launching soon so that’s why I’m gathering feedback pretty much everywhere 😁)
@jonathantahiry keep it short, and take the customer through a quick and easy journey from the problem they face to the solution and benefit they get. Don’t take time with a full demo, they will not watch it all.
I don't know. I think a clear description with out marketing jargon is better. If you have to make a video to come across with the purpose of your product, fine, but make it an auto-playing gif at least.
@sentry_co I agree. I created a video that’s written in plain words so it’s super easy to understand. Not technical in the least bit. Otherwise I think you alienate a lot of folks
I love video, but can be time-consuming to get the content, especially with a deadline. I'm thinking of editing another animation for my site, as I feel like seeing something moving straight away is always an attention-grabber... plus, if it can explain who you are in a few seconds, it's a killer!
@slimmy82 specifically on the videos I’ve seen on product hunt- I primarily use my phone so the video is linked to YouTube that takes me out of the app, so it’s not a video I can watch while scrolling and reading more. So I think that’s the biggest downside for me
@sweizbeatz so if I’m watching the video it’s because I actually like what I think I understand and want to learn alll about it. If the fundamental understanding isn’t grasp while reading the description then I wouldn’t go through the “hassle” of watching the video
@sweizbeatz that makes sense. I didn’t even realize. It’s pops up for me I watch and then close. But I see what you mean. I ask this because I plan to launch and wasn’t sure if I should add a video
@slimmy82 I go back and forth, I’m launching too - and I know people say it’s important but I think all media is jsut as important, and videos take a while to creat so just depends on how complicated the product is potentially
launch videos? yeah, huge fan. they're like your product's first hello. short's good, keeps people watching. cool's great for buzz, informative's great for clarity. best ones? they do both. got a fave style or one that really stuck with you?
I think a video 30-45 seconds is a great way to engage. Sometimes people don’t want to read slabs of text or see a ton of images. A short explainer video can go along way. But it should be showing how quickly and easily it takes the customer from point A (problem) to point B (solution)
I would say not that important, but it must tell people what your product is and when to use the product, and if it is a tool make sure to explain features clearly.
The video shows your product from the other side depending on how the editor shows it. But if there is a product video at launch, then the chance of becoming the best product of the day will increase.
