@maxwellcdavis that sounds encouraging! We'll be launching without a hunter, and I really hope people will see the value in the product and will be willing to support it.
I launched my first one without a hunter and we managed to get to the front page, on a Friday. So I suppose, you can do it without a hunter.
I think if a hunter is going to provide some benefit, even marginal - even just an extra vote, then it is worth the effort. There must be a reason why so many people still use top hunters. You have to book them like 2 weeks in advance.
My next product will be with a hunter, so I will be able to compare the two options better.
Hot topic. I've been pondering over it for weeks, and tried to contact several of the top hunters, but got no reply. Also, I've checked how well the products hunted by the top hunters, scored, and they didn't always perform that great. Sometimes it was even 50% of the products got 100-something upvotes, 50% got 300-400 upvotes and more.
So I've decided not to bother and launch by myself having all the control over the launch. Of course I am a bit worried about whether or not we'll make it to the front page... which is important... and which is something a top hunter could guarantee - AFAIK being hunted by a top hunter means automatically getting to the front page, which is a big deal.
Are you launching any time soon, James? Curious about what you decide after reading the responses here.
We have worked with Chris Messina in the past and it definitely helped a lot in our case. Our very first launch was quite the fail as we weren't well prepared at all. The second time we did it, we worked with Chris and prepared everything meticulously and managed to get to #2 product of the day. We're soon launching again with a hunter, but I actually believe that a well prepared launch can also work out great without a hunter.
Great question! We're working on publishing new content soon since we know this is a topic that gets tossed around a lot.
Unfortunately, a lot of the content out there on the interwebs has become outdated as time has passed!
Here's the TLDR; now:
• The role of Hunters has evolved a lot over time, but hunters will always be an important part of the Product Hunt community.
• Makers, you do not need a Hunter to launch your product.
• Most top products today are self-posted. 71% of #1 Product of the Day launches were self-hunted.
• We suggest that makers pick the most recognizable person on their team to be their hunter (i.e. post the product).
• If all else fails, reach out to our support team and we'll help with your "hunt"/post.
• Don’t ever pay someone to hunt your product!
