It depends on the situation, I guess you are always a student so its no harm to become a follower even if you are leader to learn something new. Its largely depends on the situation.

I think being adaptable is key - there are times to step up and lead, and times to follow the lead of others who have expertise or good ideas. The best leaders know how to collaborate effectively and aren't always trying to be in charge.
