I’ve been using Gem for a couple weeks now, and it’s been a fun way to curb my auto-pilot instincts of opening Reddit or social media whenever I pick up my phone. The app is really simple: open it up and read headlines + 3 key takeaways of the latest tech news. It’s very very fast and fluid, so you’ll quickly know whether or not this is for you. At first, I didn’t know if I’d consistently use Gem over my other news apps, but it’s so tempting to open up given how simple/rewarding it is to browse. It feeds my fidgeting fingers because everything is just a swipe or tap away, and I like that it takes me <10 seconds to feel baseline familiar with any story that pops up. I came across Gem because Ian and Prabhdeep have been building out in the open, pulling feedback from wherever they can get it and making improvements super quickly. This is definitely an app I’m going to keep an eye on (it hasn’t left my home screen yet!), especially as someone that consumes way too much tech news and often times in the most distracting way possible. Right now, Gem has a lot of potential and it’s already shaping up to be my favorite way to mindlessly binge content that’s actually useful to know. Congrats to @ianmendiola and @prabhdeep_gill for launching, and thanks for sharing Gem with me!

Thanks @danielha for hunting us! Hey all 👋 - One of the founders here. Feel free to ping me with any questions or feedback. It's still early days, we have a lot of exciting things on the roadmap coming soon. Look forward to hearing what you all think.

@danielha @ianmendiola Can you share a bit about your AI stack including what LLMs you use, any frameworks, ops tools, etc? Looks very cool!
Ian Mendiola
@yoshichenu - Nothing fancy at the moment. Just some good old OpenAI gpt-3.5-turbo-16k. The hardest part was stitching a bunch of systems together and creating something reliable and elegant.

Really awesome to see this out in the public. Congrats on the launch!

The app is so cool and slick. Super easy to get started on reading the news with minimal setup. The summary is helpful and it gets me through more content in less time. I felt so well informed while using the app. Great work, team! Can’t wait to see how this app evolves ✨

@anbu5 Thank you! Feel free to send me any feature requests :)

Love using Gem - it's so fun! It actually makes me feel good about scrolling on my phone every morning. I love how the app guides me through the important parts of an article bit by bit: title first, A.I. summary next and then finally I can click through to the article if I want to read the whole thing. The app is helping me read more of the things I care about and comprehend the most important parts better than any other app I've used. Love the minimalism too. Congrats on the launch :).

Been on the Gem TestFlight for a few weeks now. Find myself opening the app multiple times a day to quickly swipe through a dozen stories or so. It’s just something about the simplicity and fluidity of this app that makes me keep coming back day after day. Having been an avid user of reader apps over a decade, owing to the sheer number of writing pieces available now, I’ve struggled to get to “inbox zero” in my reading lists / queues etc. Over time, that has made me avoid or even dread opening them altogether. My queues just keep accumulating, like email... Enter Gem. I never dread opening Gem, because I know I could be in and out in 30s, a couple of mins or even 10 mins, with new knowledge and a feeling of satisfaction. It's kind of like skimming headlines but a lot more useful. We live in a new age where there's just too much news out there — Gem embraces that and proposes an intelligent, fun way to navigate this era. The AI recommendation engine has been getting progressively better from the day I started using Gem. And I've got a growing wishlist of features already.. TLDR: Gem is just plain dumb fun! You gotta try it to know.
Prabhdeep Gill
@sidjha appreciate all the improvements you’ve helped us make to the product! We are going to build your feature request to “Send article to Gem for summary” soon to help you get through all your content :)

Congrats on the launch! Love how simple and straightforward this is. Makes it super easy to cut out the aimless scrolling while getting the news I need!
Ian Mendiola
@samjau does the UI/UX meet your standards? ;)

Looks very cool!

Just to clarify before I download: This is a RSS reader with AI summary?
Prabhdeep Gill
@sentry_co almost.. you can’t subscribe to specific feeds, but we curate a bunch of tech and finance rss feeds and use AI to summarize.
André J
@prabhdeep_gill Aha. Would love custom RSS with AI summary. that would solve the problem with google reader etc. Over subscription to feeds.
Ashok Raju
@prabhdeep_gill @sentry_co Love this idea! Although I like the curation aspect too. Maybe custom RSS + subscribing to the apps built in curated feeds? Excited to see how this evolves.
Alexander Embiricos
Enjoying your app @ianmendiola! Getting my daily tech and finance updates has never been easier. Can’t wait to see how this evolves and what else enters the spotlight. Keep the momentum going!

Looks really cool! Will try it! Do you use chatgpt?

I’ve been using Gem for the past few weeks and it’s become super addicting to swipe through stories daily and learn. Can’t wait until more categories are supported in the future!
Ian Mendiola
@sonya_jain1 More categories coming soon! Politics, sports and entertainment are in the pipeline

It's hard for me to get time to read long news articles to stay up to date with what's going on. Gem gives me the TLDR on everything I need to know - love using it on my commute. UX is also so clean and easy, which makes such a difference when you only have a few minutes a day to browse. Can't wait to see what new features the team rolls out!
Harpaul Sambhi
Great concept! Question - how does the feed determine what content is best served for me first?
Prabhdeep Gill
@harpaul thanks! Great question - we show you trending stories and stories with various topics in tech and finance when you first start using the app. Then similar to TikTok, we start learning what kind of content you like/dislike via explicit like, share, time spent, etc) to help feed into the next set of stories you see on the app.
Joe Zeng
Really slick and easy to use. Excited to see what new features get added!
Jane Manthorpe
Love the idea, but unfortunately you don't provide the service in my country, New Zealand. Any plans to do so?
Gadi Borovich
Super impressed with the ease of use--will give the app a try!
Cyril Gupta
Congratulations on your launch! Will give it a look
Ian Mendiola
@cyriljeet thanks! let me know if you have any feedback or feature requests.

Gem is on the move to beat Artifact as the next-best news app. It naturally focuses on summarization and ease of comprehension which is the new way forward in news consumption. There are too many fluff pieces and hyperbolic articles these days to know what's valuable/useful to read. Gem solves this with a super slick UX, quick access summaries and amazing recommendations. Congrats to the Gem team, keep up the good work.
Prabhdeep Gill
@raheel_govindji thanks! Keep sending us any feature requests to help make it even more useful for you
