Hi Product Hunt, Hiten here 🤓. We launched FYI two months ago, and I’m super excited to share our new desktop app with you today. Our goal is to solve your biggest problem with documents: Finding them. Documents don’t just live in the cloud, they’re on your computer too. That’s why we’re launching FYI Desktop, one of the most requested features. Once you install FYI Desktop, you’ll be able to search and organize all your desktop documents alongside your cloud documents, all from one place! You can start using FYI Desktop on your Mac or Windows computer today and your local files will be added to FYI. We’re super eager to solve the problem of finding your documents no matter where they are, in the best way possible. To do that, we need your opinion. Please take a look at FYI Desktop and tell us what you think. You can use our in-app Drift chat, @usefyi on Twitter or email me at hiten@usefyi.com or @hnshah on Twitter.

@usefyi @hnshah Nice product Hiten and Marie. Could really use an instant search functionality though to be able to tweak queries as you type. Any plans on adding that?
Marie Prokopets
@usefyi @hnshah @jmarovt Thanks for the feedback Jakob! Instant search is in the works, appreciate the request for it!

@usefyi @hnshah Amazing piece of work Hiten, fyi is really effective and efficient for managing the documents

I don't know how I lived without FYI. I don't want to think about what life would be like without it. FYI seems to launch a magical elf who lives inside my computer and knows exactly where all the files are. It saves me so much time from wandering through folders and cloud drives. If you don't have it, get it.
Marie Prokopets
@marymin Thanks Mary! We're super happy to hear that you're saving time and can't live without FYI 😀

can you not search by recent activity for google drive docs that you are actually apart of not just the entire organization's recent activity? Makes it useless otherwise IMO
Marie Prokopets
@d0b0 Yes, you can, that's how FYI works. Let us know what you think once you try it out.

Dear FYI - I use my gmail account for business. Please don't block me, or force me to create another email address to use your product.
Marie Prokopets
@stoweboyd You can sign up using your personal email, just select personal instead of work on the "What would you like to use FYI for?" screen
David Fastuca
Well done @hiten and crew. Beautifully designed 👌
Marie Prokopets
@hiten @davidfastuca Thanks David!

Congrats once again guys. Been using and loving FYI so far, can't wait to give this a try! It'll be awesome if you guys consider adding support for videos although I know they aren't documents but with apps like Loom becoming so popular and video marketing becoming so important, finding videos is also a pain. In fact, I've tried searching for videos on FYI only to realise they aren't documents.
Hiten Shah
@irhymeth Great idea! We are thinking through how best to support formats that aren’t technically documents.

I NEVER go looking for a document in Google Drive or Dropbox anymore...which feels amazing. I open a new tab (which is now set to FYI) - and 9 times out of 10, the document i'm looking for is right there in my activity feed. (because either I viewed it in the last 7 days, or one of my coworkers shared it with me). Saves me a lot of time hunting for documents.
Marie Prokopets
@switmer777 We love hearing that! Thanks Steve!
Atul Acharya
At a first glance, it looks lovely. 👍 The idea makes sense - search/see all your docs in one place. Would love to check it out.
Marie Prokopets
@atulacharya Let us know what you think once you check it out!
John
looks awsome really does, however im not seeing a download for desktop? am i missing something?
Marie Prokopets
@johndesk27 thanks JW! There are two ways to download desktop, in onboarding you can do it when you are adding apps to FYI, or if you’re in the Chrome extension go to manage apps by clicking the ... on the left sidebar by Activity Feed. You’ll see a Mac or Windows icon on both of those screens.
Chris Handy
Dang! So good. I’ll use and report back more.
Marie Prokopets
@handythinks Thanks Chris! Can't wait to hear your thoughts, you've been so incredibly helpful with your feedback. Keep it coming so we can make FYI better for you :)
Brad Oliver
I like it, but it highjacked my new tab in Chrome... is there a way to turn that function off without deactivating the extension completely.
Marie Prokopets
@thebradoliver You can download the desktop app and remove the Chrome app. To add the desktop app from Chrome, just click on the ... on the left sidebar by Activity Feed and select "Manage Apps". You’ll see a Mac or Windows icon on both of those screens, click to download.
Brad Oliver
@marie_prokopets Thanks!!! I can't believe I missed that, I saw the Apple logo and my mind automatically went to iCloud, not Mac app.
ZenUnwired
Pretty cool idea @hnshah. Cant wait to try it. Quick question - The hero image on your website shows Evernote....but there is no Evernote integration?
Marie Prokopets
@hnshah @zenunwired Evernote is in testing and coming soon. Please let us know what you think about FYI once you try it!
Will Curran
It gives me a ton of warnings when trying to install the Windows version and then when I try to install it, it says I don't have permissions to access. So I couldn't install and gave up. Just FYI :p
Marie Prokopets
@itswillcurran Thanks for letting us know, we're working on making the Windows experience better.

Congrats team, great work on the product 👍

❤️Marie here. The larger a company is, the more likely that important documents are sitting on people’s computers. And the more likely they are to get lost. I personally experienced this when I worked in corporate America at companies with 10s & 100s of thousands of employees. Meanwhile, there are more document apps than ever. They’re really easy to use… until you’re trying to find documents 😅. No matter what size company we’re working at, most of us are living in a document mess. We don’t remember what folder or app our documents are in. Who made them. Even titles and keywords are a distant memory. We just can’t find our documents. We built FYI to solve this painful problem. Letting people search for documents across their apps using FYI was a huge improvement, but you told us we had to do more. That’s why we’re launching FYI Desktop on Product Hunt today. This is one of the top 3 most requested features and we’re excited to release it. Our goal with FYI is to be the best way to find your documents, no matter where they are. We’ll always have a free plan for anyone to use. We’re eager to hear what you think and what we should do next. Tell us what you want 😻.
Razvan (CEO competitors.app)
You are moving so fast with the development of FYI. Very nice.
Marie Prokopets
@razvan_girmacea Thanks Razvan! We're doing our best :) and there's much more coming...
Steve Nathan
Hi. Trying to install the windows version but Windows Defender won't let it install? Am I missing something.
Hiten Shah
@timehubnz Not missing anything. Windows take a number of installs before the app gets past Windows Defender. Would you mind emailing me what you are seeing? hiten@usefyi.com
Tabish Gilani
This is a great idea! Although, I'm curious about the security of the documents on fyi. How much information of the docs can you (fyi) read, parse and organize? Can you elaborate a little bit more on how the document owner can keep their information protected?
Marie Prokopets
@tabish_gilani Check out our Protecting Your Documents page & let us know if you have more questions https://usefyi.com/protecting-do...
Jason M Festa
👍 Congrats on the release!
