Fluent automatically translates words on websites so you can learn a language while browsing the web. You never have to set aside extra time just to study. You can now learn from content that you're already interested in.
I've been on the beta for a month or so now, really interesting to see how many words you can pick up over time. Similar idea to Toucan, wouldn't be surprised if this is the new way people pick up languages or keep up the languages they learned in school but have since started to drift (that and watching subtitled Netflix) :)
Congratulations on the launch Ara & team!
@nickabouzeid Thank you so much for the support and for the hunt Nick! We definitely think this will become the new default way to learn/practice a new language :)
@nickabouzeid what's impressed me the most about the Fluent team is there ability to ship new features a lot faster than Toucan. The future of this product may look a lot different. So far am loving it as a user.
Congratulations on the launch @gknd95@ara_ghougassian1 Few weeks back I hunted the product, as it was not ready for all we pulled it down. I have been using it since few weeks now and the results are fantastic. I would like to see other languages adding up :)
What are the next steps included in your roadmap?
@ara_ghougassian1@divjpatel Hey Divynash, thanks again for the congratulations and the original hunt! It means the world, and we appreciate your being accommodating so we could have this launch go super well! Can't wait to show you what we have in store for the next few weeks :)
This is amazing. One of the difficulties I had while learning a new language was to implement practise in every day life. This extension makes it so easy to do that. I'm excited to see what's coming next. BTW isn't that the coolest, most-effective onboarding for a chrome extension?
Hey Product Hunt, I’m Ara 👋. Really excited to share the first version of Fluent with you!
The biggest problem with learning a new language is finding the time to fit practice into your busy life. Even if you get started it's hard to keep that same motivation to practice day after day, for months.
Fluent helps by removing the friction to practice; you install Fluent and instantly you're learning new vocabulary right inside your browser. No apps, no notifications, no setting time aside to study.
Today we're ready to put Fluent into the hands of all of you but to continue getting better, we need your feedback.
If you're learning French and you've tried Fluent, please let us know what you think. You can send us a message through our in-app chat, DM @usefluent on Twitter, or email me at ara@usefluent.co
We have a lot more planned and we're going to be working really hard every day to make Fluent better for all of you 🎉
P.S If you're learning a different language than French, you can upvote new languages here to stay updated: https://feedback.usefluent.co/la...
@usefluent@ara_ghougassian1 What an amazing extension! This will surely help a lot of people, and can't wait for it to support more languages! Well done guys :D
Wow what an amazing idea! I'm a little bit worried that it may ruin my English but I'm excited about improving my French!
Any plans on bringing Spanish on soon?
I wanted to learn french forever but it's hard to force myself to sit and do. I've been using Fluent for months and it's the best & easiest way to learn french without me even noticing it!
@jamalx31 Thank you for the kind words Jamal & for all of your feedback so far. You've really helped us make Fluent so much better, the whole team appreciates your support :)
As someone who's been keeping up with the Fluent team for a while now, I'm stoked to see them launch on PH! Great group of folks who have great instincts on the marketing and product side of things. Congrats!
One of the best ways to learn is to integrate it so seamlessly into your daily routine that you forget you're even doing it. You don't need AR, you don't need endless lessons, you just need something simple like this. Awesome job guys, I mean it.
Congrats on the launch Ara! Absolutely love the product & can't wait to see where you go!
Would totally recommend this to anyone looking to learn a new language :)
Congrats Ara on the launch! Fantastic product. Been using it for nearly a month and it’s really fun picking up and trying out new languages and showing off to your friends. It’s unbelievable how subconsciously you start picking a language up without any effort. Definitely a product with great future! Ara and team have worked really hard to bring us a clean and easy to use product that requires minimal effort and blends nicely into your day to day work.
@karthik_k1 Karthik I'm really pumped to have you on team Fluent! Thank you so much for the kind words man, If you ever have any feedback on how we can improve Fluent for you, please let me know 🙏
Quite a lot of fun, and great way to inject learning into the day without, say, a nagging green modern theropod getting involved.
I did have a bit of trouble on the very first page I tried (BBC News homepage, where words were selected and highlighted, but I could not interact with them) but has otherwise "played nicely". One consideration for the density slider - perhaps have it seize on larger continuous phrases, not just additional discrete words?
All in all, 9/10, would click through scary "Let this thing read and modify everything I do on the web" Chrome extensions permissions dialog again. :)
@murchadh Thanks so much for your review and feedback! We'll tinkering on how to make phrases work the best. Would you be looking for things like adjective-noun combinations like "the big house" or "a tall bear" ?
@ara_ghougassian1 Yes, adjective+noun or adverb+verb combos would of course be nice, but perhaps more useful (and easier/less error-prone to implement?) would be single lexical items that happen to be made up of multiple words. Fluent will happily swap out a single English word for a string of several in French that have the same meaning, but I don't think I've seen it do the reverse. A perfect example from an article I was just reading - the article contained the term "food courts", and Fluent translated "courts" for me ("tribunaux"). And that's fine, though I know the words for "food" and "court". (I had to consult a dictionary to discover "foire alimentaire" and similar. But hey - Fluent still inspired me to do so!)
@ara_ghougassian1@murchadh I'm glad you brought this up, it's one of the main things we're working on right now is both common phrases and smart word combinations that we can hard code. That and verb conjugation.
I love languages, and have investigated nearly every language app out there -- not only is Fluent in the top echelon of apps with an addictive and effective UX (essential for keeping language learners motivated and engaged), but the founders are proposing some fresh ideas for how to improve language education for the better. I can't wait to see where they (and my French) go in the next few years! 🤗
@joseph_hall This means a lot to the team Joseph, thank you so much! We're really excited to keep improving the product and have some really cool stuff planned for the year :) Please let me know if you ever have any feedback on how we can make Fluent better
This is so cool!
Congrats on the launch on PH @ara_ghougassian1 ! Been following your journey since the viral tweet from your company account taking a jab at Duolingo!
I guess I am finally going to learn French after years of procrastination now.
@paresh_deshmukh Thanks Paresh!! Please let me know if there's anything we can do to make the experience even better for you once you try it! Best of luck on your French journey - you got this man <3
