No way. This is brilliant... I've been in Sweden for 4 years now and the running gag in my team is that I don't speak swedish. This is about to change...
@menimor Hey Meni, we hand-craft all of our languages. Since you are in Sweden, if you have any native speakers that want to contribute and make your learning possible, we'd love to chat more. Please send us a message in the contact form on https://flipword.co. Also, contributing to our crowdfunding campaign will help us move everything forward even faster :D
@peytonhayslette Thanks Peyton! We worked super hard to rebuild our on-boarding recently. Please leave any feedback you have! We'd love to know any other thoughts you have as you try it as well. Thank you!
Safari would be cool but this extension alone might be able to make me convert to Chrome. I had a similar idea couple of months ago but it wasn't this advanced.
Recommended for literally every person on Earth
@noxowe Glad to have you on the Chrome train! We want to master the experience on one platform, and then quickly replicate everywhere. We very much hope to benefit every individual, and bridge otherwise disconnected communities
This is awesome - as an individual who speaks 2 languages and whose IP address (because of geolocation) often gets mixed between 2 countries - my internet content is always mixed between English & Spanish, and I can definitely say this is a good way to learn. Hopefully I can use your application to learn other languages - definitely see long term in this - congratulations!
@reeset I'm simply stating the learning benefits of reading content in two languages which has happened to me for years before using your application. I'm now starting to use your application to learn new languages :)
It's good for the web-surfing to be curated for Flipword in sessions. Perhaps you should couple your service with something like www.sessionbuddy.com - With language it's important for each web-surfing adventure with language-learning attached to be comprehensive to some degree for, without a comprehensive approach I'm just not going to retain at the same level, for example:
If a Flipword web-surfing session is "Reading News" -- then my Flipword session in-browser should encourage me via UI-UX to completely read an entire sentence of an article to start then, slowly begin to move to more of the article and complete at least 1 paragraph (an entire idea) to finish.
If instead I'm just using Flipword to curate language learning within my subjective channels during each web-surfing session then, my learning overall can't be comprehensive.
To curate different sessions for users would allow them to explore topics on the web like "Science", "Religion", "Entertainment", and more allowing a user to become well-rounded and better versed as a result of Flipword. ( These could be medals you achieve because you've learned "Scientific" Korean words )
If the user only uses Flipword during a Facebook session they may not gain enough insight into the langauge to really grow their skills to the potential that Flipword can offer.
The gamified lessons & quizzes should then only help supplement the organic content that has been read within browsing sessions.. and browsing sessions should be well-rounded surfing allowing a user to learn extensively within a specific category for example:
I start looking up Cars, so Flipword would encourage me to read one paragraph of an article about cars during my session and, perhaps next time encourage me to describe a car in multiple situations as a quiz or in a gamified space in-browser.
I'm planning to explore Korean with Flipword
Yinghua and Thomas, thank you for making this awesome product. You did an amazing job. Now it becomes a much more practical way to learn. Wondering if there would be any other European language coming later on?
@edelweissting Hey Ting, thanks for being interested in FlipWord. We would love to add more languages! Like Thomas mentioned above, we hand-craft all of our language data. Once we have enough resources, we will add more languages. We are currently running a crowdfunding campaign to do just that, please invest to join us as we grow. Then we can move even faster :D
@rahulr047 Hey Rahul, sorry for the issue. A few others have also reported it. We are trying hard to fix it; however, based on what we've seen, it looks like an issue with the Chrome Webstore. Others have just tried it later and downloaded successfully. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is super cool. Sounds really nice way to practice new language gradually.... But, what about sensitive data ? Are you going to be reading and storing all web pages and content that I browse ?
Awesome extension, I've been meaning to learn Spanish for a while. I think this will definitely help with vocab (though less help with grammar). I wish there was a profile page where I could see all the words I've learned and all the coins I've accrued (if there is, I haven't found it- which is another problem).
Before signing up I wanted to see what languages are available but I'm having trouble finding any information, anyone know languages are currently supported?
@jbrack Hey Jesse, we currently support Spanish, German, French, Italian, Chinese (Simplified, Traditional, Cantonese), Japanese, Korean, and (for funsies) British English. Thanks for bearing with us :)
@reeset Since I'm looking for Danish, it would be great if you add a field where you ask which languages you want on the website and a email field so when you add a language, those who select it receives a notification by email :)
