I love this product. Fascinating view into new trends, especially with all the uncertainty in our world right now.
Josh Howarth
@lukethomas14 Cheers Luke - very glad you like it. And absolutely, there's a lot of opportunity with this uncertainty right now. So hopefully we can help you find it :)
Brian Dean
@lukethomas14 Thanks Luke. I appreciate that. For sure: this is (by far) the time with the biggest change in search patterns we've ever seen. That's why we wanted to highlight some of the topics that look to have long-term staying power.
Benji Hyam
Thanks for creating this Brian. It’s fascinating to use this to see new opportunities to go after and to validate some assumptions around products that might do well right now or themes such as online courses that people are looking into right now
Brian Dean
@benjihyam You're welcome, Benji. For sure: the most interesting part for me are the metatrends that tie some of the specific topics together. Like online learning and at-home fitness.
Omar Zenhom
Big fan of your work Brian and this is exactly what my team needs right now! LOVE IT!
Brian Dean
@bizrepublic Thanks Omar! Glad you liked it.
Peep Laja
Very insightful. Lots of new stuff for me.
Brian Dean
@peeplaja Thanks Peep. Same here. I came across dozens of new topics that I didn't even know existed yet (like Japanese cheesecake and dermaplaning).
Josh Howarth
@peeplaja Thanks Peep 👍
Sandoche
Very interesting as always!!
Brian Dean
@sandochee Thank you 👍👍👍
Josh Howarth
@sandochee Cheers Sandoche 🙌

Awesome work @backlinko, @joshahowarth & @kyle_byers! I’m glad to see ET growing and offering new opportunities to people. I was wondering: are you planning to showcase products related to trends in the future? Example: On the “Laptop stand” page, you could suggest a selection of popular products on the market https://www.therooststand.com/ (my favorite) or https://www.moft.us/.
Josh Howarth
@yesnoornext Hey Vincent - thanks for the support, going all the way back to the very beginning! 😊🙌 That's a great idea about the "suggest a selection of popular products on the market". Definitely worth considering. And I absolutely need to get a Roost stand myself 😛👌
Kyle Byers
@backlinko @joshahowarth @yesnoornext Thanks, Vincent! And nice idea. We don't have plans to showcase related products that way. But never say never :).
Brian Dean
Hey Everyone 👋 I'm Brian Dean, Co-Founder of ExplodingTopics.com. We all know the topics that blew up during coronavirus: -social distancing -surgical masks -yoga apps -uber eats Question is: now that things are opening up... what's next? Well, we decided to pore over our database of thousands of trending topics. And identify trends that are set to see sustained growth post-COVID. 📈 We then compiled the most interesting and relevant of those post-COVID trends. And added insights and analysis to explain why each topic is likely to grow as lockdowns end around the world. So yeah, that's it! I hope you enjoy the report 😀 Needless to say, we're super excited to be on Product Hunt today! My co-founders Josh (@joshahowarth), Kyle (@kyle_byers) and I will be around all day to listen to any ideas and feedback you might have. Thanks!
Meisha
This is great! Thank you! Given that 5 months have passed have you felt the need to adjust your algorithms given the continued volatility of COVID-19?
Andrew Tang
Hi @backlinko Thanks for sharing this! This is literally what I needed right now :)
Josh Howarth
@keybloc Glad to hear it Andrew!
Brian Dean
@keybloc No worries, Andrew
Andrew Tang
Where are you guys pulling the data from? Just curious
Josh Howarth
@keybloc Hey Andrew, we're sourcing topic data from all across the web: search, social, shopping and so on.
Konstantine Gegeshidze
WooW, looks great. Congrats.
Jessica Gottlieb
?makers does this work on the assumption that covid is over now? Because... well, it's still starting.
Josh Howarth
@jessicagottlieb Hey Jessica, good question. We're not assuming covid is over just yet. But we see these consumer behaviours and topics as being permanently affected even after it is over.
Shovan
Really cool product, I have already discovered new topics. Best wishes
Josh Howarth
@shovan Thanks Shovan 👍
Oriol García Gómez
Great insights! Could you tell us more about the tech behind identifying the trends? How do you define which keywords to analyse?
Josh Howarth
@oriolgarcia Of course Oriol. We monitor all across the web (search, social, shopping, etc) constantly for interesting keywords. And then run algorithmic analysis of the search growth of those topics to determine if it's trending.
Scott Dobos
Really interesting to see what’s the next big thing to come. Thank you for putting together these trend views! So helpful.
Josh Howarth
@scott_do 💯% Scott! And of course, very glad you like it 👍
Brian Dean
@scott_do Thanks Scott
Riley Tomasek
There is a bunch of interesting stuff here that I never would have thought of. Nice work! What made you go with the 5 year timeline as default? Doesn't that seem a bit long if this is showing post covid-19 trends?
Josh Howarth
@rileytomasek Thanks Riley! That's true that 5 years includes a lot of non-coronavirus time. But we chose it for this reason: it gives good context to see the impact of COVID relative to beforehand.
Riley Tomasek
@joshahowarth That makes sense, but if you look at the five year trend line, a lot of the examples are seeing marginally different growth than the five years prior. Examples are dermasampling and omad. It's also a bit misleading to show the percentage change over five years. This is a great idea, but it could be improved by addressing a few of these details.
Josh Howarth
@rileytomasek Appreciate the feedback. I see what you mean. It's tough to choose a timeframe that best demonstrates every topic's individual pattern. So maybe next time we'll use different timeframes depending on the individual topic, or a shorter timeframe like you say.
Marcel Diedrich
So interesting! Really like your approach to look at things in the future despite all the negative effects of the pandemic. It's really exciting to see which topics interest grows as people have more time at home. Great work, hope you'll continue!🙌 When I saw your post here, I became directly aware of it, as I am currently working on a project about the potentials of COVID-19. I think that besides all the tragic events, there are also positive things that people can take something from for the future. Feel free to have a look at it, I'd love to hear your opinion! 🧪 https://www.producthunt.com/post...
Gabrielle Kim
Fascinating app, there a lot of trends I thought I'd see, but also a lot that really surprised me. Well done with the app!
Josh Howarth
@gabrielle_kim1 Thanks Gabrielle :)
Brian Dean
@gabrielle_kim1 Thanks Gabrielle. Same here: I was surprised by at least half of them.
Mankaran Ahluwalia
love it, fascinating insights. Congratulations guys, was hoping to see climate change or sustainability trending, heard it being mentioned with COVID and economic recovery now!!
Josh Howarth
@themankaran Cheers Mankaran. Interesting point about sustainability - we'll keep our ears to the ground on that one.
Joseph Arden
To keep ourselves up to date with the statistics. Cool idea
Josh Howarth
@joseph_arden Cheers Joseph :)
