Hello Product Hunt!
We initially built Instant to track your life automatically on a dashboard. We track your phone usage, sleep, places, travel and fitness. (Apps on Android too)
But we realised, users need more value out of their data. We started out with building weekly reports. Moving ahead, a Chatbot Coach in the app made sense since users can easily query their data. More importantly, the Coach passively analyses your trends and correlations. Example: You’ve been sleeping better from the past three days since your walking has increased.
Looking forward to your feedback! Here is a Medium post on how we built it: https://medium.com/@shashwatprad...
Instant on the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id9...
Instant on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/ap...
@shashwatpradhan this is awesome.. did you guys build chatbot as a lib that can be integrated in other apps? or was it an extension of an open source lib..
@maddynator if you are talking about the UI, on Android we built it from scratch. For iOS we used JSQMessenger: https://github.com/jessesquires/...
I would recommend building it from scratch to keep it flexible.
@shashwatpradhan thanks but I am interested in the AI part... you mentioned in medium that its all done locally.. how does bot interpret and extract data from local store.
It automatically keep track of the time spent on your phone, while travelling, at places, while sleeping & on fitness activities. But the data isn’t enough. Instant also gives you weekly reports based on your data. All your data is private, only stored on your device.
@galeriks hi, thanks for trying Instant out, you can backup on your iCloud or Google Drive to keep your data with you. We track sleep based on motion of the device. Else, you can connect your wearables to it too.
Isn't this an app that REALLY needs cloud backup (export import doesn't cut it come on) ? What if I change the device? Would be awesome if you had cloud sync because the data looks amazing.
@slmnm hi Salman, we already have cloud backup which we introduced last month. We use iCloud for iOS and Google Drive for Android. You can import the data when you change your phone that way.
@shashwatpradhan Thanks for getting back. The app is awesome! The export feature seems to be manual. At least if it had automatic backups like in whatsapp, that would be more convenient. Ideally, imho sync with google drive would be more suited.
Very interesting proposition. Do you see a possibility in the future to integrate with wearable devices. For example I have all my activity, sleeping and calories consumed data from my Garmin watch and don't need to track from the phone. On the other hand I need the analysis that you provide and the additional data for phone usage. Do you see in the future this kind of combination?
@shashwatpradhan it syncs through the Garmin Connect app with Health, do not know about google fit. As far as I have seen it does a good job at syncing, only with Active and Resting Calories it seems to have some problems. Will give it a try this way
One additional idea is to apply the same model of the Chatbot Coach to more advanced sportive data and analysis. Hardware companies like Garmin or Suunto are very good at hardware but they all do a poor job at presenting the data. Even dedicated apps like Traningpeaks are too complex and you just have a pool of data being displayed with not much intelligence. I would love for a Chatbot like yours to tell me how am I training or how my running form is progressing etc.
@klajdi_kl that's great! Yes we are planning to open up our analysis services to more parameters and devices. For now the weekly reports should be able to give you some data.
@galeriks we track sleep using motion patterns from your phone. If you have a wearable that tracks sleep you can sync it through the Health app or Google Fit!
Hey guys! Nice app but I tested the unlock count and it doesn't seem to be working using even Touch ID or entering the code. The other things look good
Nice app guys! I have monitored most of those things a spreadsheet (and failing to update it several times) - this is a great improvement! Is there a way to input data to the app? For exemple: I train cross-fit with the phone in my backpack. Is there a way to input this info to the app? I couldn't find it.
@pisrael hi Pedro, we want the tracked data to be automatic in Instant so don't allow manual entries right now. Although, you can export data as a csv from Instant and then add your cross fit data in that spreadsheet.
@shashwatpradhan Hi Shashwat! I'm really using the app now but data input / editing still an issue for me. Yesterday I went to bed at 11:30 and woke up at 6h, but the app says I slept from 7:24 pm and woke up at 9:46 pm. I'm really enjoying knowing how much time I'm spending using the phone, or how much I "waste" commuting, but I really would like to get the data right to create a nice historical data and take action on it. Let me know if there are any plans for it.
I really enjoy this app. I'm looking forward to seeing some data about my day-to-day spent away from my computer.
One thing that confused me a bit was the branding. I see "Instant - Quantified Self", I see "Emberify" and I see "Shashwat Pradhan." Not a big deal, just something I noticed early on.
Also, I think there should be a slight delay in Instant Coach feedback. Perhaps simulated typing would work. I know it says "instant" but it almost feels "too instant"... as if I'm receiving canned responses. A delay would be a subtle touch that I think Instant could benefit from. 2 seconds isn't literally instant, but it's close enough for me when I think I'm talking with some semi-intelligent being.
Great job!!
@lee_peterson hi Lee thanks so much for the feedback. Really appreciate the time you took. Yes Emberify is my startup's name and Instant is the product's name. Will work to make it clearer.
@shashwatpradhan this looks exciting! which data sources are you integrating as of now and planning on integrating in the near future? specifically - health sensor data from the smartphones?
and secondly, how is the sleep data being collected?
lastly - app/ api integrations with urban record / google fit / healthkit / myfitnesspal?
Thanks!
@ddevjani right now we are using smartphone data/sensors independently and through Google Fit/HealthKit. We are planning to start directly integrating with wearables and IoTs starting of with FitBit. Our sleep tracking works on the user's motion and estimates based on our machine learning algorithm.
I've been using this app for about 3 weeks now, and it's honestly taught me so many things about my phone usage and just general behaviour patterns! Absolutely incredible stuff, and can't wait to see what all they expand to!
And for real, upgrade to the lifetime pro membership, it's worth it!
I tried it now for a few days because i was curious about it. Especially i was curious about the sleep, because i don't see how my phone would know that. And well, seems it doesn't. Interestingly enough even the wake up time is about 15 minutes off, even thought my alarm is on my phone. Clearly it needs GPS for a lot of features, i haven't tested those (poor battery) as well as the app logging features.
I see the potential, i guess in a future where we wear devices the whole day it could generate a lot of interesting data.
I LOVE this and am working on something very very similar - well done. I'm so glad to see something out there that is so very close to what I'm building, it ratifies that there is a desire for this out there. 871 up votes is such a great sign.
@benjudah hi Ben, that sounds great! We work with other companies on the development who are making self-tracking apps/products. Shoot me an email on shashwat@emberify.com if you would be interested.
I download the app on my iPhone and was thinking it was really cool until I left on my lunch break. Something about the app was causing the Bluetooth phone connection in my car to think I was on a phone call and rendering my radio useless. I had to disable Bluetooth on my phone, delete the app, and then enable Bluetooth again for my radio to work. I tested it a couple times and its for sure the app causing it.
I've been using this for a while, kind of cool at first, but a lot of the tracking data ends up being too inaccurate to be useful. Very cool otherwise.
@andym_dc hi Andrew. Sure we would love to hear from you. Could you shoot me an email on shashwat@emberify.com with your thoughts on how we can make it more useful for you.
@shashwatpradhan hey sorry, I misphrased that. The things it's supposed to do are certainly useful. Or at least just cool to know. But it never did those things. After a full day of using phone, it'd tell me I had 3 or 4 pick ups. Psh, I have 4 pick ups before u wake up in the morning. Also, just saw a misspelled word, which doesn't affect functionality, but I just have this weird thing about things being correct. Having said that, I am typing on phone so any overlooked typos here should be attributed to that ;)
