I am the creator of Dirt and currently series one is available to read.
When I came up with the idea of this particular High Fantasy, I decided I wanted a few fundamental differences to other books in the Genre.
To begin with, I have always been puzzled why in our democratic countries, we make heroes out of Kings and Queens in fantasy who, when you think about it, are autocrats often within a feudal society. Even Narnia falls into this category.
I decided that my heroes would be ordinary, recognisable people who were fighting for fairness, freedom and liberty. As one of my characters says, "Freedom is the most powerful weapon in the world if enough people hold onto it at the same time."
I also wanted my heroes, male and female, to be us. They are strong, brave and clever, but they are also ordinary; the women are not scantily clad and the men are not gods and they are heroes because they have to be, not because they are born to be.
And then there are the dragons. I have this theory that an intelligent, talkative, knowledgeable creature would be most unhappy about living in a damp cave - pile of gold or not. Where is Mrs Dragon, or kiddy dragon? Where are their friends? How do they eat? What do they talk about late at night.
With higher intelligence comes culture so my dragons live in communities, like to cook their food, live in peace, and enjoy friendship. However, they do fly and, like birds, are not territorial like humans. They don't understand the idea of nations or borders. They are inherently peaceful and in my world, there are no records of Dragons going to war with Dragons.
Oh, and the Draig Mynyth Coh (The Red Mountain Dragons) brew really good beer!
