Hey Andrew, been following this for a while - amazed you still don't have a unit in Workshop Cafe in downtown San Francisco, I can't think of a more perfect location for something like this - that place is packed at the most random times with the most techy people.
Question to kick things off: Do you have any plans to share data between customers / units? I could see something where the unit owner decides to allow sharing of their data and in return gets access to the data of other shops around them which might lead to a community or cross promotional activities...
@tommoor
Definitely. Aggregate, open data is always more interesting than silo'd. I think there's an important balance with data sharing, though. We want to encourage a city planner realizing two businesses are complimentary but police a company who tries to use Density to track their competitors.
At this point, we think it's a game of distribution. How do you get an enormous number of sensors out into the world and generating meaningful data?
How did you approach distribution with Sqwiggle? Direct, partnerships, or a combination?
@andrewfarah If the game is distribution then a self installable version ala square feels like it should be at the top of your list as quickly as physically possible once you've figured out any issues doing the current manual installations...
@tommoor Fair point. One other thing I should mention. Density should be unremarkable when it's installed. That's hard to accomplish at scale. So the first step atm is to get the installations as smooth as possible for us and then venture out into smooth for others.
But your point is well taken.
@gillianim would you use them as a mobile in it or as a permanent installation? I guess I'm asking, what types of venues were your planning in and around?
Wow looking really good guys! Love the way the story has come to life.
p.s. @jason as an upstate NY transplant I both resent and totally agree with that decision :)
@darrenbuckner Was our first partner he personally has more to do with our sensor's ability to stay online than almost anyone. #PortlandTroubleshooting. More on how we let them down here :) -- https://medium.com/@andrewfarah/...
@andrewfarah hey there. awesome job!! really excited on how you continue to innovate...looking forward to getting my hands on this for some fun project :)
Super proud to have been an investor in Density, and having talked them into moving to San Francisco from somewhere in upstate New York (no offense!). They have really advanced a lot in two years... killer team, killer product.
@jason This is going to be in Vegas with Jason on board. Can't see a better application than Casinos and Resorts where they literally can out dollar numbers on each person that walk in. Wait for it...
I really like this concept and this seems a lot simpler to use than similar technology. My question is why you have to install this versus making it "self-serve"? Seems like you'd open it up to more people that way. For instance, I'm in Cincinnati. Will you come out to install one unit in one location for me? Seems expensive on your end even if you use local contractors. I'm picturing everything in a box that I can install myself.
@jonmrich in developing the technology the last year, it's been a balancing act between function and form. Until @ubeam gets integrated into our stuff, we need to run a power wire to an outlet. Which, if handled improperly, can look bad.
The unit has to be both small enough to disappear into the background but installed properly enough, that the data is never bad and the unit doesn't need to be replaced (battery or otherwise).
That said, a self-installed unit is certainly not out of the question. It's just early. And, atm, our data is only as good as the quality of our installations.
When a typical customer could represent hundreds or thousands of installs, making sure the first significant set are properly stood up is important.
@andrewfarah This makes total sense. I was picturing the units with Li-ion or similar like many of the beacons out there. Thanks for the quick response. Best of luck with it.
@jonmrich re: http://expound.io. I dig the "Enter your total database size:" on the homepage. Really puts into perspective what's possible with the software and a clever user hook.
Hey there Product Hunt!
In April, when the Density iOS App was posted, we were floored by your enthusiasm. It was so overwhelming, we decided the fastest way to put Density in every city was to open up our tech.
The Density Platform is built for startups - companies that want a simple way to add real-time count, capacity, or foot traffic to the network of places they serve and the apps or products they build for them.
Pick a place, we’ll install, integrate Density anywhere.
Also... the new hardware is free. Happy counting. :)
@andrewfarah sounds interesting, definitely a need for this. I spent some time in the footfall space using sensors in my last startup. Can you talk about how you manage occlusion (people walking together, strollers, pets, etc) real time capabilities and how accurate the system is ? Might make me a customer :p
@edch2020 Sure.
1. We can measure multiple people walking two-abreast through a double door when we install sensors on both sides. For our single door entryways, we've found few people walk in directly next to one another. They just can't fit.
2. We're looking for really good data. Not perfect. People and businesses make decisions when clear, accurate data is readily available. Few seem to care about being off by single digit percentages.
3. Every environment is different. So our signal processing algorithm learns with each markedly new doorway or venue. It's amazing how much something as simple as a line out the door requires the algorithm to stretch a different muscle.
Not sure if those answer your questions perfectly but, in my opinion (in its current form) it's a very good solution to a fundamental problem.
@meshlakhani We've heard the word "gyms" a lot lately. Particularly on college campuses. Any particular gym? And would you use this even if it were at a place with lots of scheduled classes?
Nothing to do with the product, but mad props to the team for creating a killer landing page. I'm not usually a fan of the long scroll, but here, it works. No fluff - felt like I was being walked through a demo/pitch. Love it. :)
@andymci The result of a great team, understanding the importance of clear copy, insane amounts of iteration, and simply being fed up with product sites filled with incomprehensible marketing speak. We think there are a few things to improve on but are definitely aiming for an understanding of the product before you even touch that scroll wheel! Thanks for the feedback.
This is great! I can see a gigantic potential for the platform in terms of automated processes triggered by the device. Also we need this in the office to see from my desk if the foosball table is occupied. Could also install a webcam but hey technology, bitches!
This is very cool! Would be even more Awesome if it can be battery powered, so I can take it with me everywhere and do foot traffic research before any real estate purchase!
@_dannybin Our sensor doesn't use all that much power but it needs a steady stream of energy all day. We had some inquiries about a mobile unit and solar has certainly come up. Out of curiosity, how long would you ideally like to collect real estate data for (2 weeks / 3 months?) and what type of real estate - residential / commercial?
@andrewfarah@_dannybin What's the range on Density like? Could it be used to monitor foot traffic through a downtown street? If mounted on a doorway, or inside an externally facing window?
@clogish@_dannybin Conservatively, this model's range is 48in. It's optimized for doorway-threshold coverage. That said, we think there's a lot of opportunity in measuring foot traffic outside. But at the moment we're focused on the billions of doorways in the world. Maybe someday we'll move to the great outdoors.
