We started out 2 years selling with Cuvva sharing which allowed people to get insured on a friends car for a little as an hour in just a few taps. Now we are happy to announce Cuvva for owners which is designed for people who own a car but donāt very often.
Currently low mileage drivers pay excessive premium which basically subsidise high mileage drivers which isnāt fair. If you donāt drive very often then you shouldnāt be paying as much someone who drives all the time which is why we created Cuvva for Owners. You simply pay a low monthly subscription between Ā£10-Ā£30 and then few pounds per hour every time you drive.
Hey @_freddymac, is there a certain customer profile (number of years no claims, value of car, etc) that sees greatest monetary benefit in using Cuvva?
How frequently does, or do you anticipate, the most common Cuvva user to use the product and how much should they save on average?
@matthew_clementson Hi Matthew, thanks for asking. We have actually built a little calculator on the website. Cuvva for Owners is for anyone who doesn't use their car very much. People traditionally in higher risk brackets should save the most, but everyone should save a bit if they are a very infrequent driver.
You can also use us to inexpensively build an NCB if you haven't got much of a driving history.
@matthew_clementson@_freddymac The customers who should see the most benefit should be younger people, those who drive infrequently, and those who have a decent number of years NCB.
In theory you should be able to save money while driving up to about 20 hours per month, but it tends to be most cost effective when you're driving for 8 hours or fewer. In the most extreme cases, we've talked with people who will hopefully save Ā£2k or more. Generally we're quoting "up to 70%" as the potential savings versus a traditional policy.
@mollier_ We would like to offer this, but it'll be a little while until it can happen. Motorcycle insurance is actually surprisingly different from insurance for cars. In general, underwriters who mostly insure cars won't typically insure motorcycles. Our existing underwriters explained to us motorbike insurance is fairly niche and requires specialist knowledge to make it successful.
@kunalslab We may involve OBD devices in the future. It'd be useful to know why you'd prefer an app-only solution without a hardware element, if you don't mind my asking?
@billinghamj I guess I have two issues. (1) The way I've see other insurance carriers do it here in the US is that you plug in the OBD device, then mail it back after some time. Sometimes, they have a web portal that updates daily (but who's going to check that routinely?). You then get an adjustment to your insurance on your next bill. That's not direct feedback.
(2) Also, they have set up incentives for good driving in a troubling way. Hard breaking impacts your bill negatively, so I know people are more likely to cross in yellow or run a red light to avoid that behavior.
I saw that you currently ask drivers to select the number of hours of coverage they want, and then show the time remaining. Ideally, I'd just want to start Cuvva when I leave, use Waze for GPS, and have Cuvva stop when I reach my destination. Then you get a receipt, just like if you had used Uber.
@kunalslab Thanks!
For #1, this would definitely not be an issue with Cuvva. It would be connected directly to the phone via bluetooth, meaning we can process data from any device almost instantly.
For #2, that is a great point. We can actually do this with the app by itself already, as your phone has an accelerometer, but I agree that telematics can cause misaligned incentives when it comes to safety.
If we do start working with telematics, we wouldn't be pricing based on this data initially at least. The device would probably be used mainly for determining when you are/aren't driving so we can automatically bill you for the time - so you wouldn't even need to tell us when you start ideally!
@major_grooves Thanks for your question! All of the insurance is fully comp right now, there is a limit on the type of car we can cover but this is linked to how long you've held your licence.
@grs Our underwriters place certain restrictions on us. One of these is that we're not allowed to cover people under 21 and over 75. This is an initial conservative limitation which they have decided on because they need more risk data before expanding the allowances. We are working continuously to make this happen though.
@lozzagould However @grs we will be allowing 19 & 20 year olds in the next couple of days, as long as you've held your licence for at least a year. We'll be allowing provisional drivers aged 17+ in the next couple of weeks.
Interesting model, made for millennials.
After a few years living in San Francisco, I sold my car. It's unnecessary in cities like this but occasionally I'll rent a vehicle and the insurance charge can cost as much as the rental itself.
@rrhoover Cuvva for Owners is for the people who need to own a car (for whatever reason) but can't afford to/don't want to pay for full insurance. If it isn't being driven it shouldn't pay!
This is so great! As a person that only uses his car for 1/2 days per week it sounds perfect. How do you guys cover in case the user forgets to activate insurance, or drives longer than the defined time? Also, planning to expand to other countries in Europe?
Any news as to when this comes out in the USA? Would be amazing for teen drivers who only drive to and from school and work. Plus it would be even better for people in large cities that only drive when they leave the city,
