Clearspace now makes it harder to mindlessly scroll by charging an entrance fee for opening your apps - physical exercise. Unlock your apps with pushups, squats, or steps.
Thanks @mwseibel for hunting us!
👋 Hey Product Hunt! (thanks for hunting us @mwseibel)
I'm Oliver, one of the founders of Clearspace. Royce and I began building clearspace because we were tired of our phones taking us away from moments in life that mattered to us most. Our mission to create digital environments that work for us, and not the other way round.
We're thrilled to launch a huge new piece of our offering, which lets you earn time on addicting apps with physical motion.
How it works
1. Choose your exercise: pick between pushups, squats, or steps. This will be the exercise that you use to earn your time on apps you limit through Clearspace.
2. Choose your apps: The apps you'd like to use less of are up to you. Clearspace will gate those apps and require proof of motion to open them!
3. Choose your difficulty: You set the conversion ratio between exercise and minutes earned. One pushup to one minute is the default, but scale it up to 3 pushups to a minute in hard mode, or 10 pushups to a minute in warrior mode!
We had a blast building this, along the way, we're pretty sure we've built the best exercise detection in the world. And with more than a million pushups logged by users earning their scroll, people seem to agree!
Royce and I have seen first hand that changing our habits requires changing our environment. And even though we’re spending more of our lives online, our tools for changing our digital environments are incredibly limited. That’s where we come in. We’ll help you set up a digital environment that is aligned with your goals rather than big tech’s bottom line.
Some other ways we allow you to create your ideal digital environment:
- Create scheduled windows where you can freely access apps, (or they’re blocked entirely)
- Write notes to yourself that you’ll see before every app open
- Build your streak each day you stay under your scrolling budget
- Add accountability partners who get notified if you break your budget or delete Clearspace.
- Turn off social feeds entirely on the web
@mwseibel@andyroamer Great q! It's something we think about a lot. Honestly I think the unique nature of digital habits is that we can automate the moment of "habit intercept". With physical habits (take biting my nails as an example) it's much harder/impossible to automatically interrupt that
But with digital habit change, we actually can! It's a beautiful thing and one of the reasons I'm so optimistic about the space.
And I am above 1000 - almost 2000 if you count the ones I did to train the AI model on pushup detection!
@mwseibel@anteloper woohhhh I am mindblown, wanted something like this. I am spending too much time on the screen and also delaying my plan to workout daily. This will solve two problems simultaneously. Loved it, all the best for launch
@mwseibel@prad_vv Thanks so much. Can't wait to have you as a user - feel free to add me to your pushup challenges if you want a little friendly competition!
@mwseibel@anteloper congrats on the launch! just upvoted, and definitely going to give it a try. love the idea of earning scroll time with pushups! best of luck to you and the team!
Haha I love this idea. My friends and I already text each other to do pushups and such, but this is an awesome idea to encourage the workout habits while reducing screen time.
How did you get the body tracking to work? I haven't tampered with that in building yet. Congrats on the launch!
@gabe We used CreateML and a lot of elbow grease! I actually thought it was going to be significantly easier than it turned out to be. We first tried a cloud approach which was accurate but way too slow. Had to shift to doing it on-device which turned out to be a great decision once tuned up the model and got it really accurate
@anteloper I'm going to have to dive into CreateML and play with it! Don't you love when something that you think is going to be easy turns out to take most of the time TT__TT Pretty cool that this is all able to be handled on-device now.
Thanks for sharing and I hope y'all keep building with clearspace or at least with the concept. Really into it.
@gabe, thanks for the support! It’s always great to hear that people are already finding creative ways to balance fitness with screen time. Clearspace is all about making those habits even easier to stick to, and we love that it’s resonating with you. The technical side is all magic from our dev team, but what really excites us is seeing how people like you integrate it into their lives and make healthier choices. Keep us posted on how you and your friends use it!
This is such a creative and healthy approach to managing screen time, Oliver! How did you come up with the idea to link physical exercise with app usage?
@web3_antivirus This actually came from a lunchtime conversation! We were talking about how in general, tech removes friction from processes and we started speculating about areas where this friction removal is more harm than help.
Royce floated that having to physically move to access entertainment was probably a net good thing - and removing all friction from that process might have made us unhappier. We started wondering if our lives would be better or worse if we had to do 5 pushups to open our non-utility apps.
Once that happened - we couldn't stop ourselves from hacking on an early version of pushup detection, and right from the jump it was pretty obvious that our lives got better
Ha what a brilliant idea! This is like a physical sweat jar. Such a fun idea - knowing how much I hate working out, this may actually work.
Wasn’t there an app that can detect if you can do exercise properly? This reminds me of that.
Congrats @anteloper and team!
Congrats on the launch!
The idea is very cool. Downloaded the app and tested it, feels smooth.
I am curious about the tech stack. Is it a native app or a hybrid? Personally, I use Flutter. For this kind of app which requires some native API's such as FamilyActivity or ScreenTime I don't know if it would be the best pick tho.
I'm glad we have you guys tackling this problem in society — every launch is so cool & creative. I always look forward to see what's next from clearspace!
Really the helpful product. I finally got rid of the addiction to watching TikTok every day. Just try it, and you’ll see how significantly your life changes
@illialeletko Illia, so glad clearspace helped you break that habit—definitely what we’re aiming for. thanks for sharing your experience, and really appreciate the support! 🫶
Somehow clearspace turns "restrictions" into motivating/fun/empowering features... and in doing so, is ridiculously effective at keeping me off my phone unless I truly want/need to be on it.
@andrew_robinson2 Thanks for the kind words Andrew - we're thrilled that Clearspace turns what could feel like "restrictions" into something fun and empowering. These are the details we sweat day in, day out, so very glad it feels that way!
Congrats on the launch! This is the best solution I've ever found. It encourages you to either be fit or to lower your on-screen time. Best of both worlds
@akshay_lahri Thanks Akshay - extremely excited for what the future holds. We've been working with some communities, if you'd like to bring this to one your own let me know - we have a group offering
I personally love using this app - I've spent wayyy too much time on my phone and have had the goal of staying more in the present, which Clearspace has helped with a ton. Would highly recommend it!
@brijs@anteloper banking pushups is a game-changer, and once you get into a rhythm, you'll have plenty stored up for those rush hour social media moments. Let us know how it goes—looking forward to hearing about your experience!
Congrats on the launch! Tried this out for a day and will definitely continue using it. That being said, I have a few suggestions:
- Allow the exercises as a persistent setting separate from challenges. As someone using this app just by myself, I'd love to be able to have this option and not have to start another challenge every 7 days to access this feature. Then I could also configure my settings without resetting my earned minutes and tracked progress
- Allow choice of an exercise at the time of unlock (e.g. unlock for 5 minutes with 5 squats or 5 pushups). This would be good for getting some exercise variety and rest days
- Put a short timeout on the exercise detection. I had a couple instances where I finished one pushup and it tracked it as 3 in rapid succession. While getting the tracking perfect is a tricky task, I think at least putting a timeout for the amount of time a person can realistically complete one rep would help drastically.
All that being said, I love the app so far and definitely see it helping out my exercise and screen time habits! Feel free to reach out to me if you're ever doing any further testing/research.
Amazing idea! It deserves to go viral even just for the funny side of the concept and the obvious benefits like getting more productive and in better shape. Good luck guys! 💖
@iryna_filatova1 Thank you so much for the encouragement and the love! 💖 We're really excited about the concept and hope that it not only brings a bit of fun but also makes a real impact on people’s digital habits and well-being. Fingers crossed for that viral moment! 🙌
If you ever have more feedback or ideas, we'd love to hear them.
@hackerqed thanks for installing Clearspace right off the bat! Love the idea of becoming a "healthy hacker" with it. As Royce and Oliver mentioned, we’re thinking on adding more exercises like burpees and planks, so stay tuned—there’s more to come! Let us know how the app helps you stay active in the meantime!
@defatom haha, good point! glad you think the idea’s unique—we definitely wanted to bring something different to the table. we’ll keep an eye on those fitness apps 😉 appreciate the support!
@defatom Thanks Max. If I start getting some technical DM's from fitness apps trying to figure out screen time controls I'll know what's happening. Give the app a shot and lmk what you think
Love this and immediately downloaded it - but it's not working for me. The only "activity" I see is to breathe before deciding if I want to enter the app. I don't get to select pushups or other activities. I'm an Android user, does that have something to do with it?
Wow, this is a real solution for mindless scrolling! Not only does it save your fingers from fatigue, but it also keeps your body healthier. Every time you unlock an app, it's like a mini workout! 💪. Who's ready to do push-ups just to open their social media?
@misnaaaairaaa So true! It turns mindless scrolling into something way more active. Who knew unlocking an app could feel like a mini achievement? We'd love to hear how it goes for you once you give it a try—push-ups at the ready!
