Hello Product Hunt!
I'm Adam, the solo founder of CheckinBee. Often life gets in the way of keeping in touch with our aging parents as much as we'd like. I know this is true for me. Having moved to the US from England, visiting my mother a few times a week soon became having a video call once a month.
Like many elderly people living alone, my mother is fiercely independent and doesn’t want her family to be worrying about her. Although in her mid-80s, she is healthy, goes swimming twice a week, lives in her own home and loves life.
I built CheckinBee to ensure that our family had peace of mind that our mother was ok every day, especially when it could sometimes be a week between one of our family speaking with her.
I made sure that the app could communicate with a wide circle of family and friends, so that if my mother ever missed a check-in, her friends and family living locally could check in to ensure everything was fine while also keeping me informed. CheckinBee hasn’t replaced regular calls, but has simply supplemented the communication and care for my fiercely independent mother.
I'm very excited to launch CheckinBee into the world and provide this peace of mind to others.
I was just thinking about this after reading the story where a hike got lost and was rescued after 10 days in California. This happens a lot and sometimes these rescue story ends up in a very dark place.
I thought about what would be a good solution, because you need to set the right level of check-ins. A few ideas:
- auto-detect environment and only sends check-in if the user enters a remote area
- pop-ups a notification and asks the users how many days will they be offline (for example, camping in a remote area).
- thoughts on leveraging satellite texting?
Thank you for building this great product @adam_lack!
This is a really thoughtful idea, congrats on the launch! Might wanna consider expanding to voice in the future as well to account for some who might have trouble typing 👍
@ler_ws Thank you for the support! There are several other services already that do a phone call instead of a text for people that would prefer that. The downside to that is that you don't then get an hour window to check-in so lose some of that flexibility. Thanks for your comment. - Adam
This is a cool idea! Just curious doesn’t a text message feel better if it is more authentic though, I feel like AI slightly reduces that. Congrats on the launch.
@benjamin_sloutsky Thank you for your support. You bring up a good point, however, with our service, our users are looking for simplicity and speed of checking in rather than an deep authentic connection. There are several other great services that can offer more of a human-touch to the check-ins. Thanks - Adam
This is gonna help people check on their loved ones more regularly. Not trying to sound dramatic but I believe CheckinBee is gonna a great relief to those who can't be beside their dear ones all the time.
CheckinBee is such a thoughtful solution.
Questions:
- How do you ensure the privacy and security of users' information?
- Can family members customize the check-in schedule based on their needs?
Congrats on the launch, Adam!
@kyrylosilin Thank you for your comment and for your great questions.
- All of our user information is fully encrypted and stored by Amazon AWS who have exceptional data security standards. We also minimize data privacy concerns by only storing the absolute necessary data about our users, such as phone number, name and email. We don't collect any other information for reporting purposes etc.
- We currently offer the ability to customize check-in time. In the near future, we will be adding the ability to customize which days of the week the check-in is enabled for.
Thank you again for your thoughtful questions.

Congrats on the launch! This new platform looks like a great way to connect with loved ones and ensure their well-being. The daily check-in feature is a thoughtful touch. Can't wait to see how it helps families stay connected.
Congrats on the launch! Daily text check-ins to help loved ones stay independent but connected is such a thoughtful idea. Perfect for ensuring peace of mind while respecting independence.
This is so cool! Love the idea and the concept. A small suggestion if I may: I think this would be super useful for people who have family members or friends who do solo backpacking, so to eliminate the need for a singular cellphone number (cause they change numbers often depending on the country), would be nice if the messages can be done through WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.
Congrats! Love it.
@chandula Thank you for your support! You bring up a really valuable point here. I have made a note of this and we will certainly consider adding other message options (such as Whatsapp) in future updates. Thank you again - Adam
Congrats to the CheckinBee team! Perfect for maintaining independence while staying connected and secure. Highly recommend trying out their two-week free trial!
Love this idea - with parents who are almost 80, I'd definitely use it. My one problem for me (and curious if this is the case for anyone else) - my parents don't know how to text (sad, I know) and generally have no interest in learning how to at this point.
Is this an edge case or sizable segment of aging population?
@adeluise Hi Anthony, thank you for your support and for your message. You bring up a very valid point. There is certainly still a large portion of people that either can't text or don't want to text for a check-in. There are several other services out there that offer a phone call check-in or even an in-person check-in. We decided on the text message option primarily as it gives more flexibility with the check-in window. People have an hour to respond so don't necessarily need to be by their phone all the time. We know our service won't fit for everyone but we think there is a still a sizable market of solo agers who would like the simplicity of a text check-in.
Thank you again for your message.
