The idea was compelling, so I downloaded the app. I thought the subscription model made no sense, but I wanted to try the product, so I paid for the basic $10/month plan.

The promised "import audio" from another app feature? Nowhere to be found.

I emailed the company asking if I was missing something, and got no response.

Then I checked the App Store to see if other people were having similarly terrible experiences and...the app is no longer in the store.

I cancel my subscription, then follow up and ask for an explanation and a refund.

That was over a month ago. I've since heard nothing.

Chargeback time.

Pros:

At this point, nothing at all.

Cons:

The app stopped working and is no longer in the App Store. The developer stopped responding to emails, including one asking for a refund.

Hi Dan Thanks for the review, and sorry about the slow response. Our company was going through an acquisition and that took a lot of bandwidth away from our small team. I sincerely apologize for the bad experience. As of today, I have personally responded to every customer email from the last 3 months and I would like to express my sincerest apologies to you the few other customers who had to wait for a response. Regarding your question about the Import Audio feature, that feature is very much in the app. The way to do it is to go to the audio file you want to have transcribed, no matter what app on your phone has it (like Evernote, Google Drive, Dropbox, Voice Memos etc). Then, just click the Share or Export button and you will see an option in the list called "Import to Cassette". We understand that feature is hard to find in the app, but unfortunately Apple does not allow us to import files directly and this is the standard way apps can share files amongst each other. As you noted, the app is not on the App Store at the moment. This is because we need to make some changes to the App before we can put it back on the App Store as a result of the acquisition. We pride ourselves on having great customer reviews on the App Store and not being on the App Store is not ideal for us either. I understand this doesn't give you much information but I promise we'll have more news soon. Meanwhile, if you or anyone would like to try the app again, we are happy to add them to our list of beta testers. If you happen to have deleted the app from your phone, I have also added you to our list of beta testers. You should have an email inviting you to install a test build of the app. Finally, we have a no questions asked refund policy and we issue refunds to every customer. I have issued you a refund for your payment of $10 (I would've refunded any and all payments on your account to make up for the delay but it seems that was the only payment). Again, I apologize that we were slow to respond to you. To make up, I have also added a coupon for $10 off your next purchase of any plan (including the $10 plan), and we would really appreciate you trying the app again. If you are skeptical, you can try the import feature by simply exporting any audio file from any app on your phone to Cassette completely for free to verify that it does indeed import the whole audio file into Cassette and you can add bookmarks and comments as well for free. Should you decide to try transcription feature, you can try the base plan completely for free as a result of the coupon. Once again, I apologize for the delay in helping you with this. I really appreciate your initial excitement about using the app and would be very grateful if you can try the app again. If it works for you, it would mean a lot to us if you could update your review as well but I completely understand if you have found a different solution to your problem. Thanks for trying Cassette and sorry about the slow response Angad Singh Founder, Cassette

@preetangad would love to beta test! Have been eyeing the app for a while and now I'm ready to use it! bad timing on my part hah!
Rutger Teunissen
Great stuff @preetangad ! What library for Speech to text / transcribing are you using?
Angad Singh
@rutgerteunissen Hey it's a combination of our own tech and IBM Watson for now. We'll be integrating with even more intelligence technologies over the next few months to make the accuracy even better and add more awesome functionality
Tekeste Kidanu
This is crazy I just asked this question a couple of days ago here on PH https://www.producthunt.com/ask/... ! Too bad though coz I am an Android user.
Angad Singh
@iamtekeste Hey we are a small team so we've been busy working on Cassette for iOS but hope to have Android soon. You can sign up for an early invite here: cassette.design/help/android

Been using voice dictation for a while trying a bunch of solutions without finding the perfect fit. Best one so far is Drafts for IOS. Just tried this for dictation one and the quality was not as I hoped. Any specific use cases where this is proven to excel?
Angad Singh
@janfsauer Hey we don't think of Cassette as a dictation tool at all. Dictation is more of a second person use case, where you're talking to your phone and hoping for it to understand everything you are saying to it. Instead, Cassette is more of a third person listener for your important conversations. Even with where accuracy is today, it's able to add a lot of value by letting you search your audio recordings and skim through transcripts. We'll keep adding more functionality to help you organize your notes even better and share them with your team, as well as improving the accuracy :)
Angad Singh
Hey Product Hunt Cassette is the best way to record, transcribe & search important conversations, like user interviews, meetings, lectures & video calls. With almost no overhead, you can record, transcribe, and bookmark key moments - and share it all with your team. Since we first announced Cassette a few months ago (https://www.producthunt.com/post...), we've been overwhelmed by the response from the community. Thousands of users have been using the app everyday, many for 4 or more hours each day. Thanks for all the compliments and feedback you've sent us! We're now ready to take the next step in our master plan for global domination and expand beyond just user interviews. Today, we're releasing Cassette 2.0 for iOS on the App Store, our biggest update ever. What's New in 2.0: - Cassette now supports transcription in Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese (BR), English (UK) and English (US). - You can now import audio & video files into Cassette from any app, then transcribe & search them. - You can now export your bookmarks and comments from Cassette to any app, in addition to the audio & transcript. - Chat with us from inside the app. - Restart the free trial in the app if you used it up on a short conversation. We think Cassette is most useful for longer recordings, so you can search, skim & skip through the audio. - Rename or Delete Conversations and Projects. - Edit your payment method. ...and lots more. You can try Cassette for free by transcribing your first conversation (up to 30 minutes). All features of Cassette are free except transcription, which is less than $3 per hour. Cassette transcription is instant, confidential and more than 20x cheaper than manual transcription services. Users have seen accuracy as high as 90% but even a lower accuracy transcript is very helpful for searching through audio or skimming the transcript. The app was designed by designers from Stanford d.school and UCLA Cognitive Science in collaboration with David Kelley (cofounder of IDEO and d.school). We love hearing feedback from our users and read & respond to every message personally. Can't wait to hear your thoughts, Angad PS you can chat with us from the website or app, tweet us at @CassetteTech or email me angad@lemonade.io
Trishul Patel
@preetangad this is great! Are you working on an enterprise version? We have meetings where 6 or more people dial-in. If we could have cassette as one of the dial-ins transcribe the meeting that would be great.
Angad Singh
@tjpatel Hey we already have an enterprise version for teams. Send me a note and I'd be happy to tell you more about that. However, we don't yet have the ability to dial in and/or record calls. We're definitely working on that and hope to have it soon though!
Angad Singh
@cassettetech @lemonade @johnschenk Thanks a lot here. Please let us know how you like the app as you use it more!
Angad Singh
@hugopenaranda Thanks man, always glad to make users happy :)
Manish Malik
This looks great - and your demo brings out the thought behind usability perfectly. I just thought of a couple of use-cases I might have for it while watching the demo video. Great going - all the best!
Angad Singh
@dotmanish Thanks a lot! Please do share what you came up with it so us and other people can get ideas too :)

Has the app been pulled out the UK + US AppStore?
Jonathan Baillie Strong
this would be pretty awesome as a service for podcasters. Would you consider integrating with Auphonic? They already integrate with other voice transcription services but Casette would probably blow the others out of the water
Angad Singh
@jonbstrong Hey thanks that's very nice of you. Not sure what auphonic is and will definitely take a look. However you can import audio and video recordings from any app into Cassette and transcribe them. You can also export everything from Cassette to any app. Hopefully you should be able to create a workflow with that but would love to hear more info if you can send me a message
Angad Singh
@gholzmann @jonbstrong Will do, seems great!
Kunal Bhatia
Congratulations on such high engagement, @preetangad! Big fan since the beta, and even put up with my slow, old, iPad 2 just to use Cassette. I signed up for the Android beta and will eagerly await the chance to test it there too!
Angad Singh
@kunalslab thanks for your continued support and feedback for almost a year now. Lucky to have such awesome early adopters. We definitely hope to have Android sometime later this year.
Shahab Shabibi
Was really excited to try it out but the app crashes upon every launch
Angad Singh
@shahab_21 Hey sorry to hear about that. Are you on the iOS 11 beta by any chance? I'd be happy to help you with this. Can you please send me a chat from our site or an email?
Niklos Salontay
This would have been a godsend in my days as a journalist! Note taking can be very disruptive to the interview process and affect the end result. Gay Talese used to keep notes on cut up shirt boards from the dry cleaner, sneaking away from his subjects to jot things down. This... seams easier.
Angad Singh
Dun
Seems pretty cool, but when I see the subscription model I gave up. It's like if I buy 10 hours, I have to use it in a month. If I need 20 hours, do I need to create another account or buy 50 hours subscription? This is totally an example of SUBSCRIPTION for SUBSCRIPTION. Manually 👎
Angad Singh
@huangdun Hey transcription is something we pay for out of pocket so it's hard for us to charge any other way except with a per hour limit. We actually used to be a pay as you go app but switching to subscriptions allowed us to reduce prices by as much as 60%. Also switching to subscriptions has meant that people use the app 2-3x more often. You can always change or cancel your plan at any time. Let me know if you have any other questions, thanks for checking us out!
Dun
@preetangad So what should I do if I need 20 hours? And what happens to the time the user didn't use since they are probably paying more than they actually used.
Angad Singh
@huangdun Hey the time you don't use expires at the end of the month. I understand that sounds a bit unfair but doing that allowed us to drop our prices by as much as 60% and pass on the benefit back to you. We also find that it encourages users to try the app in unexpected scenarios since they are already paying for it.
monirom
If only I had this earlier for User interviews. I have no problem with the recording of conversations etc. but the transcribing was tedious and soul sucking. Definitely going to check this out.
Angad Singh
@monirom Haha soul sucking indeed. As a designer myself, I completely understand your pain and so do many of our users :)
Jon Berry | BerrySmart.com
Looks great, but the app is crashing in iOS 11 beta. Yes, it's beta - just FYI. :-) Looks great though!
Angad Singh
@jonberry Hey thanks! We're a small team so haven't had time to upgrade the app to iOS 11 yet but we obviously will test it thoroughly on iOS 11 before it comes out of Beta.
Brandon
Not sure if the tech is really there yet.. I just gave it a shot and results were not great. Also can't figure out how to upload a audio file to be transcribed after a few minutes of clicking around. Definitely rooting for you guys, but seems to be some work to do.
Angad Singh
@getbrandflakes Hi Brandon, sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Since it's a machine transcript, simple things like background noise and speaker volume can make a huge difference to accuracy. If you can send me a message, I'd be happy to send you some free credit so you can try transcription again. The transcription you see in the video is 100% real so with a few small changes, you should be able to get accuracy at least at a level where you can search the audio or skim the transcript. As for importing, the way to do it is to export the audio recording from another app on your phone. If your audio recording is in Voice Memos or Google Drive, click the share button there and Cassette will automatically show up, allowing you to import the recording, then transcribe and search.
Angad Singh
@getbrandflakes @yeesamson Hey sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Since it's a machine transcript, simple things like background noise and speaker volume can make a huge difference to accuracy. If you can send me a message, I'd be happy to send you some free credit so you can try transcription again. Japanese may not be quite as accurate as English, you should be able to get accuracy at least at a 70 or 80% level, where you can search the audio or skim the transcript.
Greig Cranfield
Android soon? This looks awesome.
Rotem Doron
looks great! inspiring design!
Angad Singh
@rotemdoron Thanks so much, we're flattered!
Dave Morse
Love this concept! HOWEVER, I'm always amazed (and perhaps naive too?) that a start-up would choose the iOS platform over Android. Have you seen the global OS market share by Mary Meeker? https://www.slideshare.net/dave....
Nir Benita
?makers, does anyone know why this had failed? Seemed like such a great idea
Andreas Duess
Apologies for being the grumpy old man, but is this actually working now/yet? I tried cassette when it was first released and accuracy was in the 50% range, i.e not good enough for real world use. Now, I know and understand how hard it is to make something as complex as transcription work, and other solutions were suffering from the very same shortcomings, but are you guys now at a stage where this is usable?
Angad Singh
@andreasduess Hey there Andreas! Sorry to hear you saw low accuracy in the past. We're always working on improving accuracy and will have some more updates in the coming weeks to improve it even further. The transcription you see in the video is a real life demo so it should give you an idea of the accuracy. It's not perfect but it's pretty good for searching audio and skimming through the transcript. Also, since it's an automated transcript, it's instant, inexpensive and completely confidential. Things like accents and background noise do impact accuracy a lot but we regularly hear from users who get as high as 90% accuracy. I'd be happy to send you some free credit so you can try the app again. Can you send me a message?
