Remote teams communicate differently

Carrot — Keep fast-growing and remote teams on the same page 🙌

Fast-growing and remote teams use Carrot to communicate important information everyone needs to see. Stay on the same page - even when you can’t be in the same place.

Chat and email get super noisy so it’s too easy for teams to miss stuff that really matters. Carrot provides a place for important team communications to stay visible so it’s easier for everyone to get caught up on their own time. Plus, when you share something in Carrot they’ll show you “who’s seen what” to make sure everyone’s on the same page.

We've been rolling out Carrot at our 100+ person professional services firm. So far, it's awesome. Things that use to get buried in email, are now on Carrot where they are easily engaged and archived. 10/10. Highly recommend.

@jonsteiman You know we love working with you, Bianca and everyone else Jon. Your team is awesome. Thanks for the ongoing help and support!

Hi Product Hunt 👋, I’m Stuart, CEO and co-founder of Carrot. We’ve been under the radar in private beta, so we’re thrilled to be hunted (thanks @nikkielizdemere!) and excited to be sharing it with you. To give you some background, we see leaders struggling to communicate effectively with their teams. This is especially true for quickly growing and remote teams.. Key announcements, updates and decisions are missed in the random noise of Slack or lost in the black hole of email. Teams lose focus and get out of sync. With Carrot, leaders rise above the noise to communicate what matters and keep teams aligned. Key information stays visible and organized so it’s easy for teams to get caught up anytime without worrying they missed something in fast-moving conversations. Carrot also sparks meaningful discussions that aren’t easy to have in chat or email. And when you post something new, you’ll know if anyone is listening! You’ll see who’s in the loop; and if they’re not, Carrot reminds them for you. Using Slack? We do, too. That's why we designed it to work with Slack from the ground up. Posts are automatically shared to Slack so your team can add comments from Slack, too - Carrot keeps it all in sync. Thanks for the comments & support!

@stuartlevinson , Was going through your product. Few thoughts if you are planning to do B2B sales : a) Target recently funded companies. These companies will be quickly growing. Hence it will make sense for them to use your product. b) Target companies who do remote hiring. Would be happy to hear your thought on same.
Stuart Levinson
@shreyaa_ratra Your ideas are spot on. We resonate with distributed teams because we keep them in sync, so paying attention to who's hiring remotely makes sense. Also your other idea for paying attention to who's growing quickly, because that's when communication starts to break down. Thank you!
Shreyaa Ratra
@stuartlevinson Do let me know if you need help in targeting such companies ?
Jason Humphries
how is this better than a specific channel in slack for product or company updates?
Stuart Levinson
@humphriesjm It’s a great question, thanks for asking. Slack is great for “fast conversations” and “getting work done”, but we hear over and over that leaders are struggling to keep everyone on the same page. Communication seems to break down as teams grow beyond 25 people, or begin to spread out over different geographies. Whatever the reason, that pain is real. People are hyper-connected in the moment, but still feel uncertain about what matters most across the larger team. You could try to solve that by creating more channels, and saying “this channel is for important updates only! keep the noise down”; but we’re hearing from leaders that at some point it just doesn't work. It’s easy, but it’s not effective. Just because you can put important news into a Slack channel, doesn’t mean anyone is listening. Leadership communication usually involves more than a stream of chats. It’s a medium-form or long-form post, so Carrot is designed to create those longer posts. We know this information isn’t real-time, so we designed a better way to browse them when you’re ready, and made it simple to find them later. A big part of leadership communication is bringing new people up to speed. Have you ever tried to search for old stuff in Slack? Can you imagine hiring someone new and saying, “go look at these channels back through the past couple of months so you know what’s important.” Going backwards in Slack is nearly impossible. Carrot also makes sure leaders are being heard, and that their posts are motivating better discussions. If someone misses a post, we work in the background to remind them. Today it’s through a daily or weekly digest, and we’re developing AI to surface the right content for everyone on the team. At Carrot, we love Slack ourselves and we use it every day. That’s why we designed Carrot to work well with Slack from top to bottom. But we built Carrot because leaders are struggling to keep teams aligned, and feel their communication is getting lost in the noise. Another channel isn’t going to solve that.

I saw Carrot baby steps a little while ago. I still remember @stuartlevinson urge to innovate on what was his problem, and I am excited to see it launching today. I am sure that with his product stewardship and a great team connected with the best tool (! ;))) we'll see them taking Carrot for a long journey.
Stuart Levinson
@raf_col Raffaele that's so nice of you, thank you! I could've written the same about you. I've learned a lot from your innovations and ideas as an entrepreneur, and have always appreciated your feedback on our product along the way.

It's hard to share information across your exec team, rest of company and board. Carrot makes it easy to do this and reduces the amount of work that goes into deciding / formatting communication for each audience. If slack helps the team stay in touch with one another, Carrot helps leaders stay in touch with their teams.

Pros:

Super useful for long form communication with team, especially for CEO's, great design

Cons:

None

Hello Product Hunt 🎉 I'm Ryan, Head of Design at Carrot. It's exciting to finally get this out into the world. Before Carrot, I lead the design team over at MetaLab, and spent a lot of time working with teams spread out across North America and Europe. I’ve always used Slack for real-time work, but with distributed teams it’s challenging to keep up with everyone and everything. Feeling constantly reactive is never something anyone enjoys, regardless of their position. I'm confident Carrot can become a space where leaders can communicate in a clear way. Not intended to compete with Slack and email, but instead to compliment. Looking forward to hearing what ya'll think!

@brandon_arnold Thanks Brandon 😺

Very cool idea. Tools for remote workforce's are definitely needed right now. What are the some of the features you'll be rolling out next? Will Carrot eventually turn into sort of an internal messaging platform? Or stay as more of a broadcasting tool?
Stuart Levinson
@turnernovak Hi Turner, thanks for the question. We've also just launched our Public Roadmap https://trello.com/b/eKs2LtLu so I'm glad you asked! It shows what's in process, and what's next. But mainly we hope it'a a place for customers to help us shape the future of leadership communication. We definitely don't see ourselves as "messaging" in the way Slack does. Carrot isn't designed for spontaneous, fast conversations that teams have throughout the day. It's for communicating things to your team that aren't meant to be a chat. They're meant to stick around for a while, inspire better discussions, and help leaders know who's in the loop and who isn't.

Congrats on your launch! I've worked on employee engagement in a past life and can see how useful this could be for distributed teams to keep in touch with leadership message
Alex Wawl
Congrats with launch! In remote jobs era this tool can be very useful. Past 3 years I worked remotely and know how it is important be on the same page with your team/department/company. Good luck with launch, best wishes! If you are planing to hire Data Scientist, Analytics, Machine Learning Engineer or anybody to your RnD department - contact me, maybe I with Worfor can help you with it.
Stuart Levinson
@alexwawl Thanks Alex, I agree. Personally, I didn't really understand the issues faced by remote employees until I ended up being one myself! That experience is what inspired me to work on Carrot. To make it easier for distributed teams to stay aligned.
Chris Cairns

As you grow, alignment and transparency become harder and harder. At some point, email and slack become too noisy, and you need something to help communicate the important things effectively. Carrot's incredible for that.

Pros:

Extremely useful AND usable.

Cons:

No complaints yet.

Veena Gupta
Super cool! Can't wait to try it.
Stuart Levinson
@veena_gupta1 We're looking forward to that, too 😃 ! Let's chat once you've given it a try.
