Hey everyone! After nearly a year of building Cap.so, we’re thrilled to unveil our latest relaunch and show you everything we’ve been working on. We've rebuilt the entire app from the ground up, focusing on what matters most: making screen recording and sharing as effortless and powerful as possible. Back in April, we introduced the first early version of Cap, and the response blew us away. We gained thousands of users, hit #1 on Hacker News (Show HN), and trended on GitHub with over 5k stars. Most importantly, we received incredible feedback that’s shaped the new direction we’re excited to share today. What’s new in Cap? Cap is now local-first and packed with powerful new features, including: • 🚀 A powerful editor • 📸 Screenshots • ⌨️ Hotkeys • 🎯 Quick action thumbnails • 🌐 Team sharing capabilities • 💻 Windows early access release …and so much more. But the star of this release, v0.3.1, is our biggest feature yet: Cap Apps. These are community-submitted apps that extend Cap’s functionality in exciting ways. The first app launching today is S3 Config, which lets you connect your own S3 bucket. With this, all new shareable links are stored and served directly from your bucket, giving you 100% ownership of your data. We can’t wait to hear what you think! Please share your feedback—it means the world to us. Thank you for your incredible support 🙏

Launching soon!
Looks very interesting-curious to know how different it is from Loom, If someone wants to replace it?
Richie
@mishra_mayank Hey, thank you! First off, we’re open source and community focused. Our roadmap is actively driven by ongoing user feedback. Feature wise, we’re local first, meaning all recordings by default don’t leave your device (unless you choose to create a shareable link). We also now offer custom S3 bucket storage support, meaning you can maintain 100% ownership over your uploaded shareable link recordings!

Congrats Richie on the launch. So much happened in this rebuild! Really looking forward using it with my own S3 bucket. Open source is all about choice and this is super epic 🚀
Richie
@mfts0 Thank you Marc 😁🎉
Tony Tong
Wow this is a beautiful product! Congratulations on the launch!
Jorge Alcántara
Looks good! Very similar to Screen Studio, right? What would you say you do different or better from them?
Richie
@jalcantara Hey Jorge! Thank you. We're open source and privacy focused. With Cap, you can connect you own S3 bucket and maintain 100% ownership over your data. We also have team specific features, like sharing videos and spaces.
Jorge Alcántara
Alright, @richiemcilroy, I see. So the focus is mostly on a more “team” collaborative use, ready for the enterprise that wants to keep all data in-house? That’s a fair approach to the market, well done!
Richie
@jalcantara Exactly! We've built an all-in-one screen recorder which is ready to be scaled and used for teams 😁 but still the perfect tool for solo use too.
Ashit from Draftly.so
Congrats on the relaunch @richiemcilroy. Do you plan to expand the Cap Apps ecosystem further? Would love to hear if there are any unique integrations in the pipeline! Amazing work so far! 🚀
Richie
@ashitvora Thank you so much Ashit! Great question - yes! We plan for Cap Apps to be a large eco system of awesome, community submitted apps soon.

congrats in your launch! Cap looks amazing! 🔥 An open-source alternative to Loom with custom S3 bucket support is a game-changer for privacy and flexibility. Lightweight, powerful, and secure—can't wait to try it out for quick recordings! 🚀
Richie
@evelyn_kumsah thanks Evelyn!

I love Cap! I'm truly inspired by Richie for making this happen and sharing the progress along the way. Big kudos!
Richie
@pontusab Thank you Pontus 🥺 I love Midday!
Max Comperatore
why in hell would i even want an open source alternative to loom
Richie
@maxcompe Multiple reasons... here's two: 1. Transparency through open source. You can see what we're doing with your sensitive data (screen recordings). Our code is literally open and you can inspect/make change requests whenever you like. 2. Privacy friendly via custom S3 bucket support. Why wouldn't you want an awesome open source screen recorder for something so potentially sensitive?

Congrats on the launch! Cap looks like a game-changer for screen recording. What's your favorite feature so far?
Richie
@ihuzaifashoukat Thank you Huzaifa! It's got to be custom S3 bucket support - being able to maintain 100% ownership over where your screen recordings are stored and served from is a game changer!
Saloni Agrawal
This is so cool. Too bad it's only for Mac :(
Richie
@saloniagraw thanks Saloni! Windows early access is available here: https://Cap.so/windows

Cap is one of my favorite pieces of software I've used in the recent years – best part is you get to own your data since they're fully open-source + via their S3 integration. Incredibly excited for this launch!
Richie
@steventey Thank you Steven 🥺 Dub is core to Cap 🤝
Guillermo Rauch
Congrats on shipping!
Richie
@rauchg thank you Guillermo! thank you for Next.js & Vercel - both are integral to Cap 🤩
Fiona da Rocha
Looking forward to a Windows compatible app...please? Was so excited by this launch and can't wait to start experimenting with it. Well done!
Richie
@fiona_da_rocha hey Fiona! Early access testing for Windows is available here: Cap.so/windows - cheers!

I tried it just then. The 20 secs capture video won't be able to play more than 0.5 second in the powerful editor. There are quite a few "coming soon" feature isnt obvious for user to know unless you have to hover your mouse over each feature and see whether its a placeholder or the actual feature. I like the concept connecting to your own S3 bucket but the basic functionality of the video editing isn't working right now.

Congrats on relaunching and much success! If you ever want to discuss integrating with Dropshare (for adding support to upload to many other storage providers other than S3), feel free to reach out.
Richie
@activeotwo Thank you Timo! Sounds great, definitely a potential collaboration here
