How do you check to see if a reference has really worked with a candidate or if they’re fanning the system?

@sarrah exactly my thoughts. Seems this is only automating / easing a small part of the process. A product that puts more focus on saving manual work than on checking the credibility of a reference just shows how HR is broken for many companies.

@sarrah To me, that problem exists w/ the person you just hired and them not being transparent/truthful. This tool automates a required process for most companies and improves response/fully completed references check by an amazing rate. The two problems we solved: 1) Speed of returning a completed reference check 2) Actually having a completed reference check on file So, I'd actually like to ask you this - How can you verify anyone is who they say they are now a days? If a new hire lies to you... Chances are they weren't a good higher and we aren't here to help you with your candidate selection. Reference ✔ verifies the information the same way we do manually today. But again, this tool is not a lie detector and automates that process by pulling public data and providing us an accuracy score. Interesting point though and I would agree, but what you are touching on is a much higher level problem in my opinion, and not the problem this tool is solving (today). Good stuff.

@leinadhorn Thanks for the feedback 😁 I'll ask the same question - Given this is only a reference check tool, and not a lie detector: How would you verify the employee's references today are who they say they are w/out hooking them up to a lie detector? Does a phone call even suffice? They could lie to you there... Curious to hear your suggestion.

@alex_papageorge fair question. I admit that I don’t know the perfect solution, but I also wouldn’t bet on the fact that there will be one, since the „problem“ itself is just too complex. Speaking of phone calls though, I truly believe that recommendations are harder to fake when you have personal interaction, depending on how you’re asking questions and the way the other person replies. After all, the more tailored the questions, the harder it is to just make sth up and stay coherent with the stuff you’re telling. But sure, if you’re putting more complexity in the tool, it might not even save that much time anymore. That being said, I didn’t intend to bash your product. I just believe that such an important part of the recruiting process may be better of being carried out in a way that makes it as hard as possible to fake references, even if that’s a bit more manual workload.

👋 Product Hunt! We've been in the recruiting world for the last 7 years and one of the most frustrating and annoying parts of the job is completing candidate references. From time spent scheduling and carrying out phone calls, to following up on email requests - the hiring process got longer and longer when it didn't have to.
