Hello Hunters, it’s Aidan, founder of Reincubate here.
I'm excited to have just launched Camo. It'll give you quality close to that of using a $1,500+ DSLR setup on calls.
Earlier this year our team moved to working remotely, and in video calls everyone looked pretty bad, irrespective of whether they were on built-in Mac webcams or third-party ones.
People told me the best quality required using a DSLR camera and a device to connect it, which together would cost over $1,500. I tried a handful of high-end webcams, but the software sucked, the colours were cold, and they kept refocusing in calls. I noticed on the odd occasion when people joined calls directly from their iPhones or iPads, they looked incomparably better.
Category-leading webcams are… noticably worse than an iPhone 7. This makes sense: six weeks of Apple’s R&D spend tops Logitech's annual gross revenue.
Thus began my journey to build Camo: an iPhone has one of the world’s best cameras in it, so could we make it work as a webcam? I shared an early build of Camo with photography expert Jeff Carlson, and he put put together a detailed comparison.
Camo has a perpetually free version with 720p video (colour balance, focus, light, etc. add more than resolution over a certain point), a choice or front or back lens, and a small watermark. No registration required. There's an optional upgrade to use all the lenses, change resolutions, adjust the image and more. Camo does all the processing on your phone to keep your Mac quiet and cool. Oh, and we bought all of the stands we could find on Amazon and reviewed them here, in case you need one.
We're starting work on 1.1 now, adding support for portrait mode / bokeh, Windows and more. I’d love to read your feedback, and thanks for stopping by. 👋
Works like a charm. I was about to upgrade so that I could use the zoom and framing feature but I saw it was an annual license instead of a one time fee. Ugh. Good software though!
Rather brilliant piece of software that turns your iPhone into a high quality webcam. There are a few other contenders in this field but Camo is very well executed and a joy to use. I don’t mind the cable - it lets me use my phone as a physical webcam, dangling upside down over the top of my non-webcam equipped 5k monitor. Can’t wait for the next bunch of features that will be added in future versions. Highly recommended!
Looks great, but I wish it worked with older iPhones. I have an old iPhone 4 which would be great to have been able to be used with Camo. I understand the technologies used may no longer work on older OSes, just longing for finding an app which will allow me to use my iPhone 4 for this purpose.
@craigcpaterson Thanks Craig! We'd love to support iOS 9 as it'd mean we can let people use the iPhone 5c; you can pick them up super-cheap on eBay. As it is we support iOS 12, so an iPod Touch will work.
If we hear from enough people on this we'll bump greater backwards compatibility up the list alongside new features. 👍
@afit thanks for the reply Aidan. Totally understand it can’t be easy to be compatible with older devices, I guess iOS 7.1.2 will probably be just a bit outwith the scope of what can be achieved.
@asafmoses Hi Asaf, I'm afraid it must be in order for us to be able to access the camera. Camo will stop your phone from falling asleep whilst it's being used, for this reason.
I used Camo to deliver a remote conference talk yesterday and it works amazingly well. Good job, team! I loved how much control I had over zoom, cropping, hue, ISO and really any camera setting you can think of.
Hey Aidan, love this concept especially as a Mac user who likes to use his laptop in clamshell mode. Is it possible to make this available to 🇨🇦? Able to download on iOS but not Mac App Store...
@shaun_pepper Thanks Shaun! The macOS app isn't in the Mac App Store as we can't connect to the phone in the way we need with the restrictions it puts in place. We're hoping to solve that in the near future. In the meantime, you can get the macOS app from our site, linked above. Or the iOS app will let you AirDrop the macOS installer to your machine.
We all know it: The built in computer camera (Apple or otherwise) is garbage. And so are most webcams.
The back (or front) camera on my old iPhone7? Solid.
I reached out and begged to beta test this - it's been something I've been asking for PRIOR to covid - and it's implementation is solid for a 1.0.
Can't wait for the Windows versions. Can't wait for 2.0. But 1.0? Totally, TOTALLY usable.
FYI, I just tested it with Telestream's Wirecast app (I use it to broadcast my podcast video each Wednesday). Seems to work fine with the beta app. Camo doesn't have it listed as a supported app on their site. It also works to directly broadcast live on YouTube. Good luck on the launch!
?makers windows support has been 'coming soon' for a while now. Any update on this? Most of us with corporate computers are on Windows so I feel like there is opportunity here.
@macconnollyco Hi Mac, Camo had only been live 6 working days before your comment, so it hasn't been *that* long!
Windows support is coming in 1.1. It's likely less than a month away.
Did you mean to leave a negative review of the app over this? It's bumped us down to 4 out of 5. 🙁
Thanks Aidan, any plans to add in bokeh effect? A lot of people seem to use Zoom backgrounds, but I feel like it just be better for the background to he blurred out so the subject is in focus and and not competing with the bookshelf in the background
Quite cool! But I thought it would stream to the Mac via wifi. Having the cable connected make me not know how to place the phone to stand up somehow..
@frexuz Thanks Kristian! We focused on using a cable first: that way your phone won't run out of charge if you get stuck on a call for hours, and it helps keep it cooler if we're not hammering the Wi-Fi chip. I was worried about having to remotely debug problems with people's Wi-Fi routers, as a really solid network will be required.
That said, Wi-Fi is coming soon, and our roundup of iPhone stands finishes with a suggestion for an easily improvised one. 🙂 (There aren't any affiliate links in there.)
@frexuz@afit How is that Wifi feature going? WFH has hit me hard and I've been looking for ways to have a webcam. The app is life saving, and having the Wifi feature would have my desk cable free. Now there is MagSafe for iPhones now and already have a charging stand totally saves the battery draining issue.
