They announced details of BitTorrent Live back and May. Today, it's live for Apple TV. Android, iOS, and OS X apps are coming shortly.
Tangent: It's so odd to me that Apple doesn't provide a way to view Apple TV apps on the web. Creators have to awkwardly instruct users to "search Apple TV for ". Reminds me of AOL keywords back in the day. 😜
@rrhoover you can view tv apps on the web now. But you can't download them. Apple need a way to trigger a download from any Web page (like Google play)
@rrhoover On the tangent. It is frustrating that you can't really use the web to discover Apple TV apps that you can then remotely install. It makes marketing tvOS apps a little challenging.
@pimdewitte Yup. Live streaming. It does not run on the original BitTorrent protocol.
We have distribution deals in place with all the channels in the service.
@arecenello@pimdewitte TV networks are looking for audience and we're another distribution channel for them. But what really appeals to TV people about this is that fundamentally they like the idea of fixed cost distribution. With traditional streaming services the more people who are watching the more is costs to support them. With BitTorrent Live the costs are fixed. So if you build a really big audience you aren't hit with a huge CDN bill.
@eriks@pimdewitte Thanks for the great answer. Follow-up question: How can a fixed-cost structure scale in the long-term for you when eventually millions are simultaneously watching these networks through your platform at the original fixed cost? There are only so many high-paying television networks, right?
@arecenello@pimdewitte From a revenue standpoint? While we will always offer a free tier. we will also eventually include subscription based channels and ads.
Hi everyone, I am Erik. I work on the Live team at BitTorrent. Happy to answer any questions.
BitTorrent Live is the first product we’ve built on top of a new live streaming protocol invented by Bram Cohen. We built BitTorrent Live in order to solve some serious problems in the live streaming space. Specifically cost of scaling and live streaming performance.
We’ll be rolling out on more platforms over the course of the summer, mostly starting with OTT boxes.
We’re also going to be adding a ton of new channels and programming.
@eriks This is great. As a developer, how can I use the BT live streaming network ? Are there plans to provide people to built apps on top of your network?
