Love that you're building this, @derekjandersen, and sounds like a typical "scratch your own itch" as a long-time Startup Grind organizer. At Product Hunt we see ~100 community-led meetups hosted every year around the world. We should look into this tool closely, @jacqvon.
Derek Andersen
@rrhoover thanks Ryan! Product Hunt's meetups are incredible. The question is, how do you get to 500 or 1,000 cities without @jacqvon's life falling apart due to the workload? :) That's where we found ourselves, up everyday all night because the tools were so inadequate. Also if you don't have an awesome brand yet like Product Hunt but you wish you did, how can you get your small army of loyal fans to start helping you light the world on fire? C2C (customer to customer) marketing may be the best way to get the spark going.

@derekjandersen @rrhoover This is definitely the way to go if we want to expand! Nice work Derek.

@derekjandersen huge congrats on this! It's pretty incredible to see how far Startup Grind has come. Absolutely remarkable. Question for you: any plan to offer an entry-level plan? Or is the idea to start using this once you have a community up and running and is generating a couple thousand a month?
Derek Andersen
@allnick this is like a community leader reunion in here! Yes we do offer plans for smaller companies to use and grow with it. We have companies/communities that have just a few "chapters" using it. It's built for anyone, but we help most with groups that want to grow it.
David Spinks
Congrats on the launch Derek! You built Startup Grind, and have now been working on Bevy for a while, helping other businesses launch similar kinds of global event programs. What's one thing that surprised you in working with other companies to launch these kinds of programs?
Derek Andersen
@davidspinks thanks David. Two things: 1) I am shocked at how quickly some companies/communities can now grow these programs. It took Startup Grind three years to get to 50-cities. We had one customer get to that in the first two months. Not everyone can do it, and for many reasons it can be better to nail then scale, but if you already have passionate fans, this can go big fast. 2) I am surprised at how much the relationships can mean in someone's personal or professional life. Having done 7k events at Startup Grind, I don't know why I am still surprised by that, but if you shake hands and interact with the right person, it can be emotionally or professionally game changing. That type of connection is impossible to recreate digitally and brands like CMX get people together in person and it changes lives and careers.

This is brilliant. Is there a "lite" version for more "indie" style event organizers to play around with? Would love to check it out.
Derek Andersen
@benln thanks Ben! As it's still new, it's not completely self serve model yet, but there are easy ways to test it out and try it.

No other team could better solve that problem. Perfectly executed while running Startup Grind, can't wait to see what's coming next. Congrats guys!
Derek Andersen
@jordansuccar thanks Jordan, means a lot coming from you. We've loved using Sponseasy over the years.

My co-founders and I started Startup Grind, a global community for startups and entrepreneurs with chapters around the world. A few years ago we started to have massive issues scaling as the tools that we used were just not built for us so we created a product (Bevy) to help us scale. After a year of developing Bevy we onboarded Startup Grind and growth took off again (now in 400 active cities). Then other communities started to ask us if they could use it and so we white labeled it for them. Companies like Atlassian (aug.atlassian.com), Duolingo, and Asana run their entire user group program using Bevy. With scalable tools, we believe that ANYONE can do this with their brand not just big companies with lots of money. Customer to customer marketing is the best way to build your brand and loyal fanbase and it doesn't take much to get going. Excited to be on PH today.

I have been using Bevy as a Startup Grind Director.

Pros:

Easy to use for both admins & users

Cons:

its still far from a complete toolbox but that is not to be expcted either

ram yonish

bevy replaces many traditional tools we used to have making our life as community managers with many events every year much easier

Pros:

Built with an amazing experience of community management

Cons:

Next steps should involve more community interactions

So excited for you to launch this @derekjandersen. It's a textbook play as you found the wall to scaling your business of connecting humans, so decided to build your own ladder, and share it with the world. Great work and keep grinding!
Derek Andersen
@kevin_j_o_leary thanks Kevin. Solving real problems is the only way I haven't lost all my money on a startup idea. I have about 10-things I thought would be really cool and no one else did. After all of those hard lessons, I have just decided I will never build anything that a customer doesn't ask me to build for them.

Excited for the customer-to-customer wave thats coming!
