App development is complex and oftentimes, repetitive. Creating modern applications requires a ton of different skills and has a huge learning curve. I started working on Appwrite back in 2019 to abstract the complexity of software development so there could be a greater focus on creating value and, more importantly, having fun writing code. Over the past few years, we have seen countless developers build their projects with Appwrite. However, your only option was to self host Appwrite, which although very simple, still added some friction to the experience. Although there was a lot of adoption, we also heard feedback from the community that self-hosting was not for everyone. It’s time-consuming, requires infrastructure management and, most of all, not accessible to every developer. This all was in contradiction to what Appwrite believes in, making it possible for every creator to create products the world loves. To stay true to our purpose, we decided to develop our own cloud solution. One that would make Appwrite accessible to more developers. A cloud that would make building a lot more enjoyable and a lot less repetitive. A solution that would integrate easily with your existing tech stack and could easily adjust to your current projects’ needs. Appwrite Cloud Beta provides you with Authentication, Databases, Storage, Serverless Functions, and a Realtime API and lots more. We support over 6 runtimes, 13 SDKs, coding languages and frameworks so you can build with the language most comfortable for you. Some other highlighted features that make all the difference are automated git deployments, function templates for adding Stripe payments and subscriptions, an AI chatbot, and messaging with WhatsApp x Vonage, database relationships, password security, GraphQL support, Command Center with AI assistant, customizable email templates, and migrating your project data from and to Appwrite Cloud in a few clicks. All in all, we are very proud of what we have accomplished together with the community over the past months and are excited to bring you Appwrite Cloud Beta. We continue to look towards the Product Hunt community for support and feedback in order to improve. You can create your Cloud account and get started on cloud.appwrite.io. Our Starter plan is free and gives you unlimited projects, so it’s a great plan to explore and start your projects. We will be available for support, and we’re excited to hear about your feedback while Cloud is still in beta and use that feedback and the power of the open source community to constantly improve and get better.

Alex Plekhanov
@eldad_fux Congrats 👏 I'm already using it for my side project and it's super helpful. Can't wait for the Pro version to come out. Keep it up 👍
Jason Torres
@eldad_fux the site is absolutely beautiful from a UI/UX perspective. Easily could have been half that as most services are. So not only is the service top notch the design is, AND your crew is cool!

following Appwrite’s journey since its 2022 GKA and I have to admit: I absolutely *love* this redesign. definitely among the most well-designed OSS products. keep up your great work, @laura_du_ry1 and ?makers team 👏👏
Aditya Oberai
@fmerian thank you so much, Flo :)
Vincent Ge
@laura_du_ry1 @fmerian Thanks! Why not make OSS products look pretty? It's a part of the experience. We know that OSS software benefits everyone, but making it appeal to everyone is a part of our beliefs as well :D
flo merian
@laura_du_ry1 @vincent_ge absolutely! design is key to building a great developer experience. keep it up -- and delightful!
Laura Du Ry
@fmerian Thank you flo!! Your support is much appreciated. Happy to be part of the community.

Heads up the link doesn't work, says "Gateway Timeout": https://cloud.appwrite.io/regist...
Aditya Oberai
@sentry_co seems to be working for me. Can you retry in incognito mode once?
André J
@aditya_oberai Seems to work now 👍 ...maybe not link directly to the registration from Producthunt ? No landing page yet or?
Aditya Oberai
@sentry_co we do have a landing page for Appwrite (https://appwrite.io); however, we linked the Appwrite Cloud registration page to offer quickest access to the platform.
Ankur Tyagi
Great work @eldad_fux @haimantika_mitra @aditya_oberai and @tessa_mero and congratulations to the entire team.
Aditya Oberai
@theankurtyagi thanks a lot, Ankur 😁

Appwrite Cloud Beta is a culmination of months of effort with one goal in mind, to bring you the best Appwrite experience possible. One of our main goals during the Beta, is to ensure the platform's stability before we can move onto general availability. During this time we understand there will be bugs and occasional hiccups, but I assure you our team is always available to address any issues and deploy quick fixes. While in Beta, Appwrite Cloud is free to use. However, we've shared our pricing plans to give you a better sense of what it would be like to build on Appwrite in the future. I assure you, we've worked hard to give you some of the most compelling plans ever. https://appwrite.io/pricing We hope you will enjoy building with Appwrite Cloud 🫶
@christyjacob congrats for your launch! I want to see more open source projects like yours here on PH
Laura Du Ry
@michelepomposo thank you for the support!
Christy Jacob
@michelepomposo Thanks for the positive reinforcement Michele! Good Luck on your launch next week!
Christy Jacob
@buradavivek Thanks a lot Vivek! 🥳

Looks good. Quick question: Would you call this an opensource alternative to firebase?
Haimantika Mitra
@sentry_co Thanks Andre. Yes, Appwrite is an open-source alternative to Firebase.
Vincent Ge
@sentry_co Well, that's a way to look at it. It's a dev tool, but philosophically, we're very different. I think of Firebase as something that dictates how you build. You buy hard into stuff like Firestore and some other GCP products. We plan to offer many DB adaptors, many storage adaptors, many ways to do push notifications, etc. An open-source platform backed by the technologies you choose to use. I think this will separate us from Firebase in the long term. We also care about data ownership. You can already export your Cloud data back to self-hosted and vice-versa. Host your data where ever you liked :)
André J
@vincent_ge Modularity is very cool. Esp if a cloud provider becomes preditory I can switch to an alternative without too much fuzz etc? What cloud buckets would you recommend to host the modular dbs / infra?
Steven Nguyen
@vincent_ge @sentry_co For file storage, we currently support Amazon S3, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze, Linode Object Storage, and Wasabi, but we plan to add support for more. For more info, see https://appwrite.io/docs/advance...

@vincent_ge @stnguyen90 What about Vercel?
Alex Dulub
The concept of a cloud solution that simplifies app development while providing such a wide array of features is truly fascinating, Eldad; your passion for making coding accessible and enjoyable shines through in Appwrite Cloud Beta.
Steven Nguyen
@alex_dulub thanks for the support! We aim to make building easier for developers!
Laura Du Ry
@alex_dulub Thank you Alex!
Vincent Ge
@alex_dulub I don't think it should take weeks of development for a freelance developer to set up an app for your local "Grandma's cookie store." Without tools like Appwrite, too much of development is needlessly repetitive. We hope to give the power of hundreds of OSS contributors to these developers, so they can make impacts in their local community.
Congrats on the launch, Team! Open source is for sure the path to many people's hearts, including mine 🔥
Aditya Oberai
@jovana_ugrinic thank you for the support, Jovana 😄
Steven Nguyen
@jovana_ugrinic, thanks for the support! 🙏🏼 I think the biggest thing I like about being open source is seeing how many developers we've helped and how many come to contribute via raising feature requests, reporting bugs, and even contributing code 😁

AppWrite has a lot of potential. I used to follow you guys on Twitter but the Tweets were a bit lacking. I did follow Amplication which I think is a competitor but they became boring as well. Hopefully you guys carve out a niche and can compete with Supabase.
Aditya Oberai
@kingromstar thank you for the feedback, Rami. Quick question, as someone following Appwrite on Twitter, what kind of content would you expect or find beneficial for you?
Haimantika Mitra
Appwrite Cloud has been very helpful in making the development process faster! My favourite feature is the function templates and Appwrite assistant!
Steven Nguyen
@haimantika_mitra function templates makes it so easy to deploy functions!

Congratulations to the Appwrite team on the launch 🤩😍🎉. Appwrite is one of the best Open Source Backend platforms, I really like the seamless authentication and user management. I used Appwrite Cloud for my Open Source tool "Snippet Builder"(https://snippetbuilder.com/) a Drag and drop code snippet builder, that effortlessly showcases your code in a visually appealing and professional manner. Thank you for creating an amazing platform.
Aditya Oberai
@sachin_chaurasiya really happy to learn about your experience building with Appwrite! Have you had a chance to share about it on our showcase platform Built With Appwrite (https://builtwith.appwrite.io)?
Haimantika Mitra
@sachin_chaurasiya Oh so cool! Like Aditya mentioned, you should submit it on Built With Appwrite and also share it with our community on Discord (https://appwrite.io/discord) :D
Laura Du Ry
@sachin_chaurasiya Awesome project! Thank you for supporting Appwrite :)
Vincent Ge
@sachin_chaurasiya I feel so fantastic whenever I see the community build cool stuff. It's so important for y'all to build and explore the limits of Appwrite, so we know what we still need to work on. Cheers!
Steven Nguyen
@sachin_chaurasiya, thanks for the kind words! I love seeing what others build with Appwrite! 🤩
Charlie Choi
this is a game changer. I might use this for our upcoming mobile app prototype. BTW, how did you create the video? Absolutely love it.
Vincent Ge
@charlie_choi3 Thank you so much, let me know how your mobile app experiment goes! The video was created by @jade_baudchon from our design team (they do magic)
Charlie Choi
@jade_baudchon @vincent_ge Hey Jade, what software did you use to produce this? Curious because we might be creating a video soon as well.
Jeffrey Bunn
Launching soon!
I’ve been watching appwrite for awhile and have been impressed. Perhaps I’ll give your cloud offering a try for my next project 👍
Vincent Ge
@jeffreybunn It's always getting better. Check in and build something quick once in a while, see how you like it and see us grow!
Dennis Ivy
@jeffreybunn Hopefully we'll be getting feedback from you soon 😁
Aditya Oberai
I am so proud of our team for this launch! We've worked on some absolutely amazing features, my favourites being our new functions templates, AI assistant, and migrations. Looking forward to seeing how Appwrite Cloud continues to grow 😁

💎 Pixel perfection
Started using Appwrite quite before the v1 hit. When it was only self hostable. The degree of dedication, support and friendliness from the team but also the genuinely awesome product they offer made them the best, to me at least. And so it was when they made their cloud platform and asked for devs opinions. They listened. To me, they're the single best open source company and community. Thank you for what you do guys! Already building my next app on your cloue:)
Haimantika Mitra
@silfalion Thanks @silfalion for such kind words! Can't wait to see what you are building with Cloud!
Eldad Fux
@silfalion Ohh wow! Thank you for this heartwarming feedback!
Steven Nguyen
@silfalion ahh thanks! 🥹 We spend a lot of time and effort in making the developer experience enjoyable so it makes me happy to see the effort appreciated 🙏🏼
Vincent Ge
@silfalion It's a two way type of thing. A healthy relationship with the community gets us free feedback. I mean knowing what users think and want for many closed source companies costs $$$, for us, we just ask on Discord and GitHub. What developers get in return is the opportunity to voice their needs and get incredible support :P WIN WIN
Dennis Ivy
@silfalion I just joined the Appwrite team and I couldn't agree more. The more you work with the team the more you realize how down to earth everyone is!

Laura Du Ry
@donquixote Thank you for your support, as always!
Andre
Great alternative to Firebase! Only native push notifications are missing at this point.
Aditya Oberai
@andrefuchs Thanls Andre! Push notifications are something we're working to bring soon :)
Haimantika Mitra
@andrefuchs Thanks Andre for the support. Push notifications is a WIP, you can follow this discussion for more info - https://github.com/appwrite/appw...
Laura Du Ry
@andrefuchs Thank you for the kind words Andre :)
Eddie Jaoude

Bernardo G. Reinfeld
Congratulations for launching the CLOUD version. It is a big step that many of us have been waiting for. One concern: Are you GDPR compliant?
Aditya Oberai
@bgreinfeld thank you. We are currently working on GDPR, SOC-2, and HIPAA compliance. We will be compliant by the time Appwrite Cloud exits Beta and goes GA.
